Ek Villain is an upcoming and highly awaited romantic thriller film, which is directed by Mohit Suri and produced by Ekta Kapoor. It stars Sidharth Malhotra, Shraddha Kapoor and Riteish Deshmukh in the lead roles, and since the day the teaser released, everyone has been waiting eagerly for the film, mostly because of the suspense which the teaser and the trailer carry. There were huge expectations from the music of this film, because, first of all, it is a Mohit Suri directorial venture, and his films are known for their super hit music. ‘Zeher’, ‘Awarapan’, ‘Raaz 2’, ‘Murder 2’, ‘Crook’, all of these were very strong in terms of music. And of course how can we forget the latest (and the hugest) ‘Aashiqui 2’?! All of his films have had awesome music, and the same was expected from this one too. Secondly, since the soundtrack is on T-Series, it is safe to expect some mind-blowing tunes. Leave it up to Bhushan Kumar to choose some great melodies. And last but not the least, the music composers of this film, who are Mithoon, Ankit Tiwari and Soch the Band (consisting of Adnan Dhool and Rabbi Ahmed), have added up to the great excitement about this album. So let’s see if the country (or the world, for that matter) can be satisfied with the music of ‘Ek Villain’.

1. Galliyan:- Singers ~ Ankit Tiwari (Original Version), Shraddha Kapoor, Ankit Tiwari (Unplugged Version), Music by ~ Ankit Tiwari, Lyrics by ~ Manoj Muntashir

The album kicks off with this melodious song composed and sung by Ankit Tiwari. It has already gained immense popularity and is on every single one of the music charts. By this only we get to know how good the song is. It starts with a sound which sounds like some wind instrument, which sounds very magical. After that the violin starts followed by Ankit’s highly autotuned voice (which is to some, an irritation and to some a pleasant experiment). I think it is a nice experiment, but in some places, it seems overdone and irritates a bit. The arrangements are fantabulous, with beautiful use of each and every instrument which has been used. The flute and electric guitar deserves a special mention, both having been placed at a perfect spot in the song. The lyrics by Manoj Muntashir, who has written songs for films like ‘Tere Mere Phere’ and ‘Love U…Mr. Kalakaar’ and most recently, Shreya Ghoshal’s ghazal album ‘Humnasheen’, are very nice, sweet and though they are complicated, they fit perfectly with the music. In the unplugged version, we witness Shraddha Kapoor singing as if she is a trained singer. She has performed very well in her Bollywood singing debut. She, being a non-singer also, has carried the song on her shoulders supported by guitars, and after the second interlude, by Ankit too. He is not sounding that good here and I would have preferred the whole song to be sung by Shraddha only. Nevertheless, this song is clearly a winner, and it deserves to be a #5StarHotelSong no matter what!

 

2. Banjaara:- Singer ~ Mohammed Irfan, Music by ~ Mithoon, Lyrics by ~ Mithoon

Mohammed Irfan is undoubtedly the person each music composer will want to have one of their songs sung by after the Arijit craze is over (which I doubt will ever happen, but still! 😜) His voice is so magical that everyone unknowingly starts liking it! After ‘Baarish’, Mithoon (his mentor) takes us for another magical musical journey with him. The tune and composition is very, very similar to that of ‘Baarish’ itself, and it seems deliberate. Even the tempo of the song is the same as that of ‘Baarish’. Even though this is a major drawback of the song, there are more good things than drawbacks, so let’s talk about those! Mithoon has probably written the best lyrics he has ever written, and has given them a beautiful tune, even though it is recycled from another song of his, but still wonderful! Mohammed has rendered the song with utter brilliance and flawlessness. The arrangements have made me speechless! What graceful arrangements! In this song, Mithoon has used harmonium as the main instrument to create a wonderful Sufi feel. The piano piece at the starting, followed by Mohammed Irfan’s lines, sound awesome! Mohammed Irfan has perfect diction too! Nowhere does he pronounce anything weirdly or wrongly! Great arrangements, awesome lyrics and fantastic vocals makes this song pleasant to hear! #5StarHotelSong!

 

3. Zaroorat:- Singer ~ Mustafa Zahid, Music by ~ Mithoon, Lyrics by ~ Mithoon

This song is weird. Sometimes it seems like a great song, and at other times it seems like the same old type of Bollywood tracks which used to come about seven or eight years back. Mithoon has composed the song in the typical old style in which he used to compose when he was new to the industry. The guitars play an important role in the song. The lyrics are good but not exceptional. At some places, I felt like some of the words weren’t fitting in with the tune. The weird part is that I found out that when I was singing it, I discovered how much I liked the tune, and when I played it, it again became a bit monotonous and boring. Maybe because of the singer. He no doubt sings good, but there is something that nags me in his style of singing, and I don’t know what. The second antara sounds great. The other parts of the song are also awesome, but unfortunately, the song has nothing new to offer, with the same old Mithoon sound. A song for which I have drastically contrasting views at every other moment. Great tune, however, so give it a listen!

 

4. Awari:- Singers ~ Momina Mustehsan, Adnan Dhool, Music by ~ Soch The Band (Adnan Dhool & Rabbi Ahmed), Lyrics by ~ Adnan Dhool & Rabbi Ahmed

With this song, a promising Pakistani band called ‘Soch’ makes a huge debut in Bollywood. The have recreated their own song which was featured in ‘Nescafe Basement’, adding a female voice and some lines to it. The female voice is (what to say!!!) too good to say much about! The composition is brilliant. It is a haunting melody which you will not think much about at first, but as you listen it time and time again, it turns into such an addictive track, which you will start loving immensely! The newcomer Momina Mustehsan, a biomedical engineering student from Pakistan, has a very very promising voice as I said before, and I hope to hear her many more times in the future! After Kanika Kapoor of ‘Baby Doll’ fame, Bollywood has gotten another very talented female singer this year! Adnan Dhool also sounds good and resembles Kailash Kher a lot. The arrangements are also very stupefying! The reverse humming a few seconds into the song sounds awesome, and the finger snaps also sound great! When the real instruments kick in, you will be put into a trance! The duo has tried to make it interesting by adding a weird techno song in the first interlude. Well, it won’t interest you, but it will irritate you! Because it sounds like a pig which was an insect in its last birth. 😂😂 However, since it is quickly covered up by a wonderful sitar part, I am forgiving it. The antara has a beautiful tune also! Well, I can’t think of any faults in the song, it is near PERFECT except for the pig insect. 😁😁 Very impressive debut by Soch Band, and also immense thanks to them for introducing a great singer to the industry! No doubt that it is a  #5StarHotelSong!!

 

5. Humdard:- Singer ~ Arijit Singh, Music by ~ Mithoon, Lyrics by ~ Mithoon

This song is the compulsory Arijit song in almost every movie and every T-Series album nowadays. No, seriously, it’s as if Arijit Singh is the new Kumar Sanu or Udit Narayan or something! Looks like he records at least five songs a day! However, the song is so beautiful, and melodious, that all those things can easily be forgotten! Though it bears a slight resemblance to Mithoon’s previous songs, ‘Shukr Tera’ and ‘Tum Hi Ho’ (a bit, I felt like that), it entertains, and serves its purpose, by giving people another romantic song by Arijit to drool over. Even though it is very nice in terms of tune and arrangement, which is mostly guitar, it does not have the potential to gain chartbuster status like ‘Tum Hi Ho’ or ‘Phir Mohabbat’. The antara has a happy-but-still-sad type of feel, and that, I loved a lot! Arijit’s rendering is awesome as usual. The lyrics by Mithoon are also perfect for the song. A good melody overall!

Ek Villain was one of the most awaited albums of the year, and it can undoubtedly be said that it has not disappointed at all. Mohit Suri has churned out nice melodious pieces from each of the composers and though they are not the best of those respective composers, they are still very beautiful songs. The excitement that had surrounded this album before release must have encouraged the composers to compose even better, resulting in a great final outcome, as the songs are being liked by a huge majority of the audience! Mithoon, who has the most number of songs (five) has not tried anything new, but has still delivered commendable stuff. Soch The Band has made a very promising debut in Bollywood with their song, and in doing so, have also given the industry a gem in the form of a new female vocalist, Momina Mustehsan. Ankit Tiwari, after showing us his versatility in ‘Samrat & Co.’, has returned to the genre by which he shot to fame, and delivers another beautiful gem of a song. This album has everything which it needs, and has not disappointed the ones who were eagerly waiting for it. A nice album with a few drawbacks here and there, but nonetheless very melodious and that has worked in its favour!
