ZEE MUSIC’S SURPRISE PACKAGES! (RANG RASIYA, TITOO MBA & ZED PLUS – Quasi Music Reviews)

Well, I had hardly any time to write proper reviews for these three albums, and I didn’t want to miss out on them either, because each of them has some noteworthy songs. Therefore, I decided to write a single post for all three of them, and what made my job easier was that all of them had one thing in common, i.e, the music label, Zee Music Company. Since it isn’t a proper review, I would term it as a Quasi-Music Review! 🙂 Enjoy!

NOTE: However, I am writing a proper review for the best album of the three i.e, Rang Rasiya 😂

This film directed by Ketan Mehta, starring Randeep Hooda and Nandana Sen, is based on the famous painter, Raja Ravi Varma’s life. It was going to release in 2008, but got delayed due to unavoidable circumstances. Well, now it has finally released and has garnered positive reviews from mostly everywhere. The music has been helmed by Sandesh Shandilya whose compositions we hardly get to hear these days, the last being the ‘Kya Dill Kya Lahore’ album. It all depends on him, to make the music of a film which is six years old, appeal to today’s audience. So let’s have a look at how good he has done here!

1. Rang Rasiya
Singers ~ Kirti Sagathiya & Sunidhi Chauhan

Traditional sounds like manjeeras and bells and ghungroos help give a prefect classical start to this album. Keerthi Sagathia, who has somehow been disguised as Kirti Sagathiya (we still know you’re the same guy! 😂) for this song, opens, repeating the title of the movie, followed by the entry of Sunidhi, who does nothing but repeat the same words again. After that, they both sing ‘rang rasiya rang rasiya’ happily for some time. This is how the first one minute and 45 seconds of the song pass. Sounded to me like some Slice ad, which would star Katrina and the bottle of mango juice. They just say something else for two minutes total, one minute makes the first antara, the other minute makes the second. Those lines are kinda romantic and I don’t see how the title of the movie fit into this romantic song. So Manoj Muntashir didn’t impress much in this song. Sandesh, however, impressed with the good tune and great arrangements! Good, likable tune, but seems flat because of the nothingness in it. Should have been reserved for a TV commercial.

2. Kahe Sataye
Singers ~ Roopkumar Rathod & Sunidhi Chauhan

Sunidhi returns for a more intense romantic song. Though classical is definitely not her forté, she delivers the beautiful tune very well. Her voice texture suits the song perfectly. Her co-singer, Roopkumar, is as always, awesome! The way he ends the song with a bang is worth hearing! Again, Sandesh has used so many traditional instruments to make the raaga-based composition stand out. The percussion and winds sound very grand and majestic, and on top of that the awesome strings portions. The lyrics by Manoj are also good, too! A classical melody to be liked by all! Wonderful! #5StarHotelSong!

3. O Kamini
Singer ~ Sonu Nigam

Sonu Nigam renders this extremely intense romantic number with ease and perfection. The vocals that open the song, are so great, I wonder why they haven’t been credited! This song has been composed like a typical Sanjay Leela Bhansali song, with shades of the songs of ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ and ‘Devdas’. The composition is so confusing, that one without any classical music interest or background, might just dismiss it as another pakaav and uninteresting song, without giving a single thought what a gem it actually is! The arrangements are beautiful with great percussion provided by thavil and manjeeras. The brief interruptions of the horns in the background are awesome too! The interlude featuring a string instrument, is surely worth hearing! Lyrics by Manoj suit the mood of the composition. It is a must-listen! #5StarHotelSong!

4. Anhad Naad
Singers ~ Kailash Kher & Anwar Khan

A beautiful Rajasthani folkish composition by Sandesh, sung wonderfully by Kailash Kher and Anwar Khan, is next on the album. The arrangements themselves are very grand and marvelous. The wonderful harmony between the two singers is beautiful. The Rajasthani-Sufi combo sounds brilliant. The tablas, and other percussion instruments, help to enhance the already beautiful song. The use of the phrase ‘anhad naad’, is remarkable. It means a primeval or primordial sound, which has been existing since the beginning of the universe. Sure enough, it has been stated by Saint Kabir, a great saint of the Bhakti era. Kudos to Manoj for presenting this new phrase in front of today’s audience! You cannot miss this gem of a composition! #5StarHotelSong!

5. Sun Balam
Singer ~ Rajashwari Pathak

The last song on the soundtrack has been sung by Rajashwari Pathak, apparently a debutante. It is a nicely composed semiclassical melody with great use of classical instruments and a calming classical beat as well. The newcomer sings well, and all the variations she has taken sound great. Her voice sounds a bit like Kavita Seth, fit for classical compositions. The tablas and flute have been very effectively placed. The lyrics by Manoj are also impressive. However, it doesn’t have that connect as all the other songs of the album have. Though it is a nice melody, it could have been more interesting!

Rang Rasiya is a treat for classical lovers and will also appeal to others as well. Surprisingly, the songs do not sound dated!

Final Rating for Rang Rasiya:- सा < रे < ग < म < प <  < नी < सां

Note:- The letter which is underlined is the final rating.

As for the other two albums, I will be writing mini-reviews for them.

So here’s the second album, Titoo MBA

Without the movie info, the review starts immediately… ‘Coz this is a quasi-review 😉

1. O Soniye
Singers ~ Arijit Singh & Vibha Saraf, Music by ~ Arjuna Harjai, Lyrics by ~ Surabhi Dashputra

(And this is how a quasi-review goes like…)

Composition: Very soulful composition by Arjuna, which was definitely not expected to be in such a small film. He will surely come into limelight through this song.
Vocals: Arijit is, as always, flawless. He does the variations very well, especially in the Sufi portion. Vibha (newcomer?) also has sung beautifully. Her background portions enhance the song’s soul. Both of them complement each other well!
Lyrics: Surabhi Dashputra has not presented something very fresh with the lyrics, but the Punjabi lyrics suit the sweet tune by Arjuna.
Music/Arrangements/Recording: Arrangements are also exceptional. Guitars have been used very well and so are tablas in the Sufi part. Recording is fab.
Mass Appeal: It will definitely appeal to one and all! The Arijit fever of the country will help it get humongous fame.
Anything Special Worth Hearing: Vibha’s soulful harmony with Arijit, the Sufi stanza, in the antara.
#5StarHotelSong Or Not?? Definitely a #5StarHotelSong!

2. Plan Bana Le
Singers ~ Aishwarya Nigam & Surabhi Dashputra, Music by ~ Arjuna Harjai, Lyrics by ~ Kumaar

Composition: Arjuna has composed an utterly ridiculous party track with no catchiness at all; comes across as CHEAP! Hard to believe that the same guy composed ‘O Soniye’!
Vocals: Aishwarya Nigam tries to ape Mika Singh in parts, but fails miserably, and Surabhi doesn’t impress either. Unattractive vocals.
Lyrics: One word: Pathetic! Kumaar has not written any appreciable lines.
Music/Arrangements/Recording: The trumpet part tries to ape Pritam’s ‘Badtameez Dil’. Otherwise, the arrangements are just techno sounds. The music suits the composition.
Mass Appeal: Of course, some people would enjoy this song a lot! But most would just let it pass as a below average one.
Anything Special Worth Hearing: Yeah, you should hear how ridiculous the song is! 😜
#5StarHotelSong Or Not?? Obviously not…

3. Kyu Hua
Singer ~ Arijit Singh, Music by ~ Arjuna Harjai, Lyrics by ~ Kumaar

Composition: Another soulful sad composition, which might seem typical and the same old thing at first, but later grows on you. Arjuna scores again.
Vocals: Arijit’s delivery is spot-on! While humming in the initial parts of the song, he sounds a bit like Vishal Dadlani! He has sung soulfully.
Lyrics: Lyrics by Kumaar are nothing new, though way better than ‘Plan Bana Le’!
Music/Arrangements/Recording: Rock elements fused with a sad melody, always creates an awesome impact! Arrangements are awesome!
Mass Appeal: It has a lot of mass appeal, again because of Arijit and also because of the soulful composition.
Anything Special Worth Hearing: The antara! 👌👌 & the hookline!
#5StarHotelSong Or Not?? Yupssss!!! #5StarHotelSong!

4. Atyachaari
Singers ~ Arjuna Harjai & Surabhi Dashputra, Music by ~ Arjuna Harjai, Lyrics by ~ Surabhi Dashputra

Composition: Supposedly humorous, but only manages to stifle a few laughs, after which it sounds too repetitive. Raps by Arjuna are irritating.
Vocals: Surabhi excels with her nasal voice, but Arjuna hardly manages to impress.
Lyrics: All I can understand is that a wife and husband are fighting. Pretty stupid lyrics. At least it is the first Bollywood song that refers to ‘WhatsApp’ 😂
Music/Arrangements/Recording: Music is very entertaining, with a twist of Qawwali and rap. Harmonium has been used impressively.
Mass Appeal: If it gets famous, which is very unlikely, then it’ll spread like a virus.
Anything Special Worth Hearing: The Qawwali twist, and the humorous voices.
#5StarHotelSong Or Not?? Sorry, please call back later. 😂

5. O Ranjhna
Singer ~ Surabhi Dashputra, Music by ~ Arjuna Harjai, Lyrics by ~ Surabhi Dashputra

Composition: Just a female version of ‘O Soniye’, with a slower pace, making it sound even more soulful! The unusual beats enhance the composition.
Vocals: Surabhi sings so well, that I wonder why it wasn’t her, who sang the original song as well! 😃 Full marks to her for singing so well!
Lyrics: Surabhi has written very good lyrics as well! Makes the song sound even more passionate.
Music/Arrangements/Recording: Piano is soulful, and the other beats in the background are awesome!
Mass Appeal: It will surely not get the recognition it deserves, but definitely had the potential.
Anything Special Worth Hearing: Surabhi, Surabhi and Surabhi!
#5StarHotelSong Or Not?? Yes….!! #5StarHotelSong!

6. Kyu Hua Khafa
Singer ~ Neeti Mohan, Music by ~ Arjuna Harjai, Lyrics by ~ Kumaar

Composition: The female version of Kyu Hua, with a different tune as well in the hookline, which doesn’t hook you as much as the original.
Vocals: Neeti delivers the composition with perfection! A pity that the song is so short.
Lyrics: Kumaar has written good lyrics, different from the original again.
Music/Arrangements/Recording: The arrangements are minimal, just like ‘O Ranjhna’, but even less than that. It provides a soothing feeling.
Mass Appeal: Doesn’t appeal much, unlike the original.
Anything Special Worth Hearing: Neeti’s awesome vocals and rendition.
#5StarHotelSong Or Not?? Not as intriguing as the original, so no tag for this one.

7. Saiyaan Bedardi
Singers ~ Abhishek Kumar & Priyanka Agarwal, Music by ~ Leonard Victor, Lyrics by ~ Nitin Raikwar

Composition: Yuckk!!! So utterly BAD and obnoxious! Was supposed to be humorous, but ends up annoying.
Vocals: Equally irritating! Especially Priyanka’s saiyyyaaaaaaaaaa
Lyrics: Even worse! Disgrace to all lyricists!
Music/Arrangements/Recording: Nothing impressive… 😒
Mass Appeal: Zero!
Anything Special Worth Hearing: The whole song is literally a special case 😂 LISTEN AT YOUR OWN RISK!
#5StarHotelSong Or Not?? Yeah…as if… 😵

Final Rating For Titoo MBA:- सा < रे < ग <  < प < ध < नी < सां

Note:- the letter which is underlined is the final rating.

A political satire, with music by Sukhwinder Singh along with a partner, Nayab Raja. Had to review! Songs are also pretty surprisingly good!

1. Ishq Ishq
Singers ~ Sukhwinder Singh & Madhavi Srivastav

Composition: A nice folk-sy Qawwali, with a very catchy tune. Impressive work by Sukhwinder-Nayab! On the lines of ‘Chhaiyya Chaiiyaa’ (Dil Se)
Vocals: Both Sukhwinder and Madhavi do well in their respective parts. Because of them, the composition stands out!
Lyrics: Manoj has written great Punjabi folk lyrics which suit the dynamic Qawwali composition.
Music/Arrangements/Recording: The arrangements are very beautiful! Qawwali touch has been brought about very efficiently. Dholaks, accordion and the like have enhanced the composition.
Mass Appeal: Again, will not be noticed much by the masses because of the low-scale-ness of the movie. Most probably will get famous after people watch the movie.
Anything Special Worth Hearing: The genius inclusion of the folk song ‘Kesariyo Balam Padharo Mhaaro Des’ at the end of the song!
#5StarHotelSong Or Not?? Definitely!! #5StarHotelSong!

2. Maula Pal Mein Palat De Baazi
Singer ~ Sukhwinder Singh

Composition: A heart-touching, sweet composition which sounds like a 80s/90s song. The song could have been a but shorter, standing a as long as 7 minutes 26 seconds! Mukhda and hookline attract, leaving weird, unusual, but good antaras.
Vocals: Sukhwinder, out of his comfort zone, still excels and Singh beautifully! In some places, he even sounds like Mohit Chauhan.
Lyrics: This seems the satirical song which is compulsory in such films. And Manoj has written the lines describing the states of the State these days, and also in the form of a prayer to God, to make everything better.
Music/Arrangements/Recording: The music is sweet like the composition. Winds (mainly flutes) and daflis are more pronounced, with tablas entering for a brief interlude with sargam. Orchestra also makes it grander.
Mass Appeal: Again, it will have its effect after people go and watch it in theaters!
Anything Special Worth Hearing: The sargam at 5:38, the lyrics by Manoj Muntashir, Sukhwinder-Nayab’s sweet tune…basically everything!
#5StarHotelSong Or Not?? Yes, of course!!! #5StarHotelSong!!

3. Fislan Hai
Singer ~ Sukhwinder Singh

Composition: It is a thrilling composition with an Arabic+Rajasthani (ultimately desert) feel, supposedly composed for the climactic parts of the film. Sukhwinder-Nayab have impressed, but only to a certain extent. Some parts come across as way too dramatic and ridiculous, like when they sing in English in this folk-sy song. 😂
Vocals: Sukhwinder has autotuned his voice in places, and that sounds good. He delivers the other parts flawlessly as well, but the flawed tune is responsible for some unattractiveness that arises.
Lyrics: Manoj has written nice suspenseful lyrics, that suit the mood of the lyrics. Fislan hai, fislan hai, kadam kadam par fislan hai!
Music/Arrangements/Recording: The beats are pretty intriguing, and actually make for a good club song or DJ song! 😂 The string instrument has been played well, making appearances many times throughout the song.
Mass Appeal: Has the potential to be hit, but a bigger and larger movie would have helped. Anyways, it bores halfway through the song!
Anything Special Worth Hearing: The awesome kad-a-kad-a-kad-a-kadam-a-kadam-a-par, and of course the R.D. Burman-ish vocals by Sukhwinder while singing maya khel dikhaati hai…kya kya naach nachaati hai… for the third time or so!
#5StarHotelSong Or Not?? Nope.

Final Rating For Zed Plus:- सा < रे < ग < म < प <  < नी < सां

Note:- the letter which is underlined is the final rating.

And with that, my 3-in-1 review comes to a wrap and so does my reviews for November month. While Rang Rasiya clearly wins out of these three, Zed Plus Also follows close behind and Sukhwinder-Nayab do not disappoint at all. It is ultimately Titoo MBA which turns out a below average album, with two gems which stand out amongst the other stupidity!

Thank you! 😊
