Mumbai Delhi Mumbai is a Bollywood film that released (quite on a small scale and very ignorably) on 5th December, 2014. It stars ‘Boss’ fame Shiv Pandit and South actress Piaa Bajpai in the lead roles. The film is a remake of the popular Marathi (Yes! Marathi to Hindi remake! Surprising!) film ‘Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai’ and has been directed by the same director i.e, Satish Rajwade. The film has been produced by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures. Well, I’ve seen the Marathi original film, and liked it as well as its songs by Avinash-Vishwajeet, so I was expecting good songs in the wider appealing Hindi remake. I found out that the music of the movie is by Sawan Dutta, who had composed for ‘Chai Paani Etc.’ years ago in 2005. Now she returns to compose for this film, which went unnoticed because of terrible promotions. (Or should I say practically NO promotions?) The album also has a guest composition by Rohan Rohan a.k.a. the duo Rohan Gokhale & Rohan Pradhan. So let’s see how this album fares amongst the biggies of December 2014!
1. Entry To Delhi

The album starts off not so impressively, with your usual loud Punjabi stuff with dhol-taashe and band baajaa. We have heard Amit Trivedi’s take on Delhi in ‘No One Killed Jessica’, now it’s time for is to hear this one-film-old composer’s version. Sawan has composed a very ordinary and typical song, one that nobody likes to hear nowadays just because of the overdose of such songs in the recent years. The tune does not manage to grab your attention whatsoever, and that is the sole factor which a Punjabi song needs to rely on nowadays, because everything else, remains the same these days in Punjabi songs. Priya Panchal does a good job in describing Delhi through her lyrics, but it gets very boring after a while. The arrangements by Sawan provide respite for a short time, mostly because of the good techno sounds she has used. The singer does well, but it is not his fault that we are already bored of these songs! Strictly a one-time listen!
2. Thham Sa Gaya / Thham Sa Gaya (Jazz Version)

The next track starts with light piano notes, that instantly give a feeling of calmness, soothe and tranquility. The various other sounds do interest as well, the soft rushing of water, the flute and the chiming sound. Papon with his very melodious voice renders the melody with ease and expertise. Sawan’s composition is one of those, which make you feel on hearing them, that they should have been in a big-budget film and they should definitely have gotten much more recognition! It is a beautiful romantic melody enriched by nice elements like the ones I’ve mentioned above. But more than those, I really loved the way the tabla has been used. Of course, the chiming bell sounds do not stop enchanting us as the song progresses and they would make a smile appear on your face whenever they come. The tune has been beautifully decorated with violins and guitar too. Lyrics by Priya are awesome, as always in her romantic songs. The other version of the song, sung by the composer herself, witnesses the sing go through a whole makeover and transform from a traditional melody to a jazzy song, complete with the saxophones, and jazz beats and rhythm. The song gives a nice 60s feel. The composer has also sung the song in a very jazzy way, though one misses Sunidhi here. A beautiful composition, making for a very soothing listen! 3. Pawan Guru Paani Pita
Singer ~ Smriti Minocha, Music by ~ Sawan Dutta, Lyrics by ~ Traditional (From ‘Guru Granth Sahib’)
This, I wouldn’t call a song, because it has lines from the Guru Granth Sahib, the religious text of the Sikhs. Sawan has wonderfully woven the words into an entrancing chant sort of thing, and newcomer Smriti Minocha has sung it awesomely and very soothingly as well. Most of the song is instrumental, with Smriti’s bits nicely interwoven into the music. There are two tracks of her voice, one high and the other low, which have been played simultaneously and produce a mesmerizing harmony. The instrumental parts have wonderful flutes, piano and sound very traditional. Anyhow, this is not meant to be a song to be played on repeat mode, but just listen once and take in the divinity and holiness of it. It will surely give you a feel of peace and solitude. Hear it not for making it a hit, but for giving yourself a feeling of content and happiness! #5StarHotelSong!
4. Rahi Rahi / Raahi Raahi (Rock Version)

The guest composition by duo Rohan Rohan, is the last song to feature on the album, and it just proves the saying “Last but not the least” yet again! The composition is a breezy one, the kind which inspires you to move, to explore, to get up and discover new things. The duo has composed and written brilliant stuff, and gives the surprise happy ending to this album in the form of this song. Neeti and Tochi both know their parts well and perform up to the mark. Neeti’s voice soothes, while Tochi’s is the actual stimulator to make you get up and explore. Their drastically different voices surprisingly complement each other very well! Though it is so lively and inspirational, it still has a sense of calmness in it. It just makes you feel on top of the world no matter what. ☺ The rock version doesn’t manage to create even half the ambience of the original version. First of all, Wrisha sounds like she’s just trying to show off with her voice. The duo has added the rock guitars and drums into this because it is the rock version. Though he has not been credited, I could still make out Tochi Raina’s voice in some parts of this version. Rohan has also sung, and his voice doesn’t have that impact that Tochi’s does. So it is evident that you should go for the original! A nice breezy and powerful road trip song! #5StarHotelSong!
Mumbai Delhi Mumbai is a very very surprising album, with just one underperforming song. But the rest impress and how! Sawan has impressed in her second album, after that debut of hers which everyone has forgotten about by now. The guest composition by Rohan Gokhale also manages to make you press that repeat button. Though this album has gotten (lemme speak very frankly here) less listeners than even many B-Grade films out there, it sure did have the capacity to get recognized, had the film’s promotions been better. (I actually mean “Had there been any promotion at all for the film”.. Very frankly!) So yeah, this blame goes on the producers and marketing department of the film, but the music department of the film has tried its best to be outstanding! I can just warn other music directors that “Sawan Aayi Hai!!!”
