Fan is an upcoming Bollywood action thriller (kind of) film starring Shah Rukh Khan in a double role — one as the superstar Aryan Khanna and the other as his die-hard fan Gaurav. The film, directed by Maneesh Sharma and produced by Aditya Chopra, revolves around the life of the fan, who eventually gets obsessed with the superstar. Certain events lead to a tiff between the fan and superstar, and this is what ‘Fan’ is about! As we can see in the trailer, intense action scenes between the fan and superstar make up most of the trailer, and they do look pretty interesting! I always look forward to the music in Maneesh Sharma’s films, but for this film, he has chosen to have no songs barring a single promotional song. At first speculations about why only one song, how would this one song be, and whatnot crossed my mind. But then I got to know that it would be the uber-cool hit composer duo Vishal-Shekhar who would be getting the honor to compose this single track in the film, and I started jumping up and down with joy. (Of course not literally!) So, let’s see how Vishal-Shekhar, back after a long time (their last was ‘Happy New Year’ in 2014!) score with this track! 🙂

Weird burp-like sounds start off the song, accompanied by groovy beats. It’s not long before guitars and trumpets and more instruments follow, played in the trademark Laxmikant-Pyarelal style, which Pritam usually takes up these days. It is a surprise that Vishal-Shekhar have taken it up, and oh-so-wonderfully! The instrumentation sounds so vast and grand, even without being something too heavy on the ears, that I can just go on praising it. It seems to be a wonderful amalgamation of Southern rhythm, in the Delhi style, with some retro arrangements thrown in like a side dish. You find yourself moving to the beats right from the beginning. Another song this year which falls in the same league was ‘Kheech Meri Photo’ (Sanam Teri Kasam), and I still cannot find more songs this year to join them there. 😀 The infectious, foot-tapping energy of these two are so much more natural than the artificial, wannabe energy of songs like ‘Akkad Bakkad’ (Sanam Re) and other similar songs. This song is obviously hookline-obsessed, as it relies on the hookline to do the needful of attracting listeners all across, and has the strongest part as its hookline. Promotional song, after all. But I must admit, that the other parts of the song are nevertheless very enticing and enjoyable. In the antara, there is a line which goes “tera yaar haay, mujhko bukhaar haay”. It is just so ridiculously cute and catchy at the same time! Talking about the vocals, I bet there is nobody other than Nakash who could’ve imparted the necessary energy to the song! His voice is the perfect mix of urban and rural and thus, he is the PERFECT choice for the song. Vishal-Shekhar have to be commended for their hard work here, making such an infectiously catchy tune, employing the right singer to carry it out (this is commendable because it is the first time they’ve worked with Nakash, and they hit the bullseye in the first chance itself!) Their arrangements are sure to hook you till the last second, with all the cool sound effects — the burp noises, guitars (with which they’ve made a great infectious rhythm), the trumpets (with which they’ve infused a Laxmikant-Pyarelal touch into the song), other synthetic sounds (especially that disco sound in the hookline! I don’t know what ir is called..) and great percussion which sounds real but is probably electronic. The dhols and nagadas give a pure North-Indian touch to the song, where as the kuthu rhthm gives the South-Indian flavour. So here’s there ‘Kashmir Main, Tu Kanyakumari’ part 2. 😂 Varun Grover writes lyrics having a universal appeal, and im really surprised how wonderfully it has been written. Fans all across the world can sing this for their idols universally. Plus, the lyrics are really humorous, highlighting the sometimes silly, or idiotic things people do out of extreme fandom. 😛 I can’t say anything more except that it is a PERFECT song and a #5StarHotelSong!!

Final Rating for This Song: सा < रे < ग < म < प < ध < नी < सां
