5 SONGS THAT SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN REMADE!! (MUSICAL LIST #1)

So today marks the start of a new section in the blog — The “LISTS” Section, where I’ll be listing songs based on one particular theme, depending on what theme I’m feeling like listing songs about. :p

What better way to start this section off, than doing it in collaboration with one of my close blogger friends, Jemma Rajyaguru from the Girl At The Piano blog! Her blog is full of random musical thoughts, lists of songs, throwbacks to the Golden Era of Bollywood music, and new releases by new and upcoming artists!

Today, we will both be listing five songs each, which we wish would never have been remade! And yes, after reading my list, be sure to read Jemma’s, as her song choices are just as exciting, if not more exciting, than mine!! Correction: they definitely are more exciting!😁 So let’s get started with my five songs so you can check her list out! 🙂 If you want to check it out now though, here it is!

P.S.: I believe no song should be remade, but these are the ones where I just don’t agree with the remake!

1. Mere Rashke Qamar (Pop Song by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan)

One would think that nephew Rahat Fateh Ali Khan would object to mauling his uncle’s gem of a qawwali, but instead, he helps maul it even more, with loud and screechy vocals that would even make the laziest person cringe. Tanishk Bagchi’s constant mandolin hook doesn’t help when it keeps repeating itself all the time amidst the din of Rahat and the backing vocalists shouting.


2. Dum Maaro Dum (Hare Rama Hare Krishna; 1971)

• Remake Details

Music recreation by Pritam Chakraborty, New Lyrics by Jaideep Sahni, Sung by Anushka Manchanda, for the 2011 Bollywood film ‘Dum Maaro Dum’, Music Label: T-Series

One of the party songs I doubt Pritam is proud of making, ‘Dum Maaro Dum’ stands high as a song that ruined the original for me big time. Yes, a lot of cool stuff is going on in the music, but the major letdown is Anushka Manchanda’s vocals, where they create a mess of what Asha Bhosle ji and R.D. Burman actually created in the 70s. And don’t even ask me about the rap.


3. Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast (Mohra; 1994)

Music by Viju Shah, Lyrics by Anand Bakshi, Sung by Udit Narayan & Kavita Krishnamurthy, for the 1994 Bollywood film ‘Mohra’, Music Label: Venus Music

• Remake Details

Music recreation by Tanishk Bagchi, New Lyrics by Shabbir Ahmed, Sung by Udit Narayan & Neha Kakkar, for the 2017 Bollywood film ‘Machine’, Music Label: T-Series

Probably the best remake on the list, but again, Tanishk stuck to his mandolin template here, where he kept repeating the hook of the song on mandolin, and though Neha Kakkar sounds passable, Udit Narayan seems to be the saving grace of the song, sounding younger than ever. The awkward dubstep mid way through the song is just *awkward*!


4. Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas (Blackmail; 1973)

• Remake Details

Arijit himself wasn’t happy with the way Abhijit Vaghani programmed his voice in this one; and I can’t help but agree! How would you like it if you got to remake a song by the legendary Kishore Kumar, and get your voice all destroyed by electronic touches? To complement Arijit’s bad voice, we had Tulsi Kumar, who surprisingly sounded better!


5. Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam (Kaagaz Ke Phool; 1959)

• Remake Details

Music recreation by Rohan-Vinayak, Lyrics by Kaifi Azmi retained, Sung by Amitabh Bachchan, for the 2018 Bollywood film ‘102 Not Out’, Music Label: Saregama

The most recent remake on the list. One would think Amitabh Bachchan ji would be a bit more sensitive when singing old classics as these, but sadly, he drones the song out in such a way, that you wonder “Waqt ne Kiya, kya Haseen sitam”. Rohan-Vinayak literally do nothing but stand and watch as they treat the listeners to almost six minutes of that torture without any enjoyable music in the background either!!


Well, all in all, I feel recreations were fine until they started to be blown out of proportion and being forced into every single album that Bollywood produced. Thanks to Jemma for giving me the mauka and dastoor to vent out my feelings about remakes; I hope you guys enjoyed our collaboration, and please make sure to check out Jemma’s list (it’s amazing)!

The Important Announcement

Due to the scarcity of time, from now on, I will sum up the entire month’s reviews in a set of two articles each month, one usually around the 15th of the month and the other towards the end. Of course, certain albums that I feel need a separate post (either because they might have many songs, or be spectacular albums, or even if the movies are highly awaited ones) I will do so for those albums. I will reveal the chosen album for this month — it’ll be “Secret Superstar” — I don’t guarantee it’ll be rated very high, but because of the buzz surrounding it, it requires a separate post, I feel! Meanwhile, the usual monthly awards posts will sum everything up once again at the end of every month in the form of awards. I really hope this format helps me balance my schedule! And I can’t wait to return to my normal long posts — till then enjoy your luck of getting to read short reviews from my side!!


October 2017 Round-Up

So this post will cover the reviews for the all but two of October releases that have already released — ‘Chef’ by Raghu Dixit & Amaal Mallik, ‘Tu Hai Mera Sunday’ by Amartya Rahut (Bobo), ‘Ranchi Diaries’ by Nickk, Jeet Gannguli, Tony Kakkar & Bobby-Imran, ‘Golmaal Again’ by Amaal Mallik, Thaman S., Lijo George-DJ Chetas & Abhishek Arora, and ‘Jia Aur Jia’ by Sachin Gupta, Nisschal Zaveri & Sameer Nichani. There will be separate reviews for ‘Secret Superstar’ and ‘Rukh’, both by Amit Trivedi.

Raghu Dixit starts off the album with Shugal Laga Le, a song having a heavy folk influence from Kerala. The backing vocalists provide that freshness associated with Kerala, and Raghu’s characteristic voice makes it all the more intriguing to listen to. In his arrangements too, he adds a dash of everything, and especially those percussions are mind blowing, along with the banjo. Ankur’s lyrics made me acquainted with a new phrase “Shugal Laga Le” meaning “find a hobby, or find something to do”. The next song by him is also reliant on folk music, this time Celtic/Irish. Banjaara is steeped heavily on the beautiful flutes that characterise Irish music, with amazing percussion and backing vocals yet again. Vishal Dadlani does great justice to the sing with those power-packed vocals. The song is one of those many motivational songs that Vishal gets to sing in Bollywood, except that this time, it has a whole new style to it. The mellow Darmiyaan, exudes a positivity in spite of the fact that it is a sad song — mostly because of Raghu’s ebullience. A splendid guitar backdrop makes it simple and sweet, and Raghu’s diction has to be lauded. Raghu takes forth the melancholia in a more Bollywood-ish way in Khoya Khoya, which I rank as the best of the album — underrated Shahid Mallya taking charge of the vocals in a very beautiful way, and Dixit’s composition has that old-world-charm to it. The sarangi is quite impressive here! The alternative rock set up will make this one loveable to many! Raghu’s last song on the album is the effervescent Tan Tan, rendered with spunk by Nikhita Gandhi, the only female vocalist on the album. In her texture, she gives off vibes of Shalmali and Shefali. Guest composer Amaal Mallik, whose song Tere Mere was also removed from the album later, produces a song you can immediately tell is by him. That doesn’t make its richness diluted, though — it’s still wonderful, with the nice dholak rhythm accompanying Armaan Malik’s beautiful voice. Also, Rashmi-Virag’s lyrics are amazing!
All in all, Chef is one of the best albums of the year in that it is a clever mix of melancholia, inspiration and romance. Raghu Dixit must sign more and more Bollywood films — I firmly believe that this is his best Bollywood album yet!

♦ A Perfect Sunday Album: TU HAI MERA SUNDAY Music Review

Out of Arijit’s two songs, the classically-steeped sad song Dhundlo Tum fares better, with an addictive strings orchestra accompanying it, and it quickly steers away from the Bhatt-ish genre that it starts off with. Had that continued, it wouldn’t have been half as good. The digital Sitar is beautiful. His other song, Thodi Si Jagah, is also classical-based for some initial parts, before it turns into an upbeat number that loses itself halfway through the song. The rock backdrop ofthe hook line couldn’t have been more clichéd. Arijit’s vocal prowess is clearly showcased in the song though. It is Amartya’s violin solo that impresses though, with its distinct classical tune. The title song, Tu Hai Mera Sunday, takes a pleasant Christmassy turn, with soft jazz making your ears happy. Shalmali renders it with a familiarity that makes you feel amazing. The brass portions have been done really well here, as are the drums. The clarinet and piano is wonderful too. It is nothing more than the lyrics that make it sound even more personal though. Ash King’s Yeh Mera Man is a pleasant departure from his previous song ‘Bandook Meri Laila’ (A Gentleman) and brings him back to his comfort zone. Again, a jazzy tune gives the song a kind of spring, and that whistle portion is so pleasantly surprising and charming, it is hard to dislike. The guitars are impressive here. Yeh Jo Pyaar Hai, a clubbish number sung by Nandini Srikar, is probably the weakest of the album, where the tune and the arrangement are just mismatched; the hookline sounds like this song was pitched for the situation of ‘Aaj Ki Raat’ (Don) before ‘Aaj Ki Raat’ was finalised.
Amartya’s best album to date provides us with a nice mix of classical music, jazz music and a banal club number! This album will go highly underrated and unnoticed though!

♦ Uninteresting Diaries: RANCHI DIARIES Music Review

Some newcomer Nickk is — he has just been made to make another ‘Baby Doll’, now that Meet Bros. just be refusing to do it. However, Fashion Queen has something in addition to the usual ‘Baby Doll’ sequels — an Arabic strings backdrop that just helps it as much as a car can help you fly. The new singer Raahi seems disillusioned with the ideals that it is okay to sing like Kanika Kapoor if you aren’t her. The composer’s rap is dumb. Helicopter‘s lyricist and composer Tony Kakkar uses the word ‘helicopter’ as a metaphor for ‘getting high’. 😶 Siblings Tony and Neha render it with as much mediocrity as they can muster. I can’t believe Tony is the same guy behind ‘Saawan Aaya Hai’ (Creature 3D) and ‘Khuda Bhi’ (Ek Paheli Leela), but then he has made ‘Ek Do Teen Chaar’ (Ek Paheli Leela) and ‘Do Peg Maar’ (One Night Stand). Jeet Gannguli’s Thoda Aur is the composer’s usual pathos-filled romantic number — you would think that after a year-long break, he would return with something pleasant. But it is the same old Arijit-Palak love story. And the irony is that this song sounds like ‘Saawan Aaya Hai’ (Creature 3D). So did Tony help him here instead of making his own song better? 😏 The last song is a banal Mika solo Godfather, composed by Pritam’s former assistants Bobby-Imran, which I couldn’t even finish once when I started to listen to it.
This is a Hodge-podge of the worst songs from the weirdest mix of composers ever.

The album to the much-awaited fourth instalment to the ‘Golmaal’ series starts with the Title Track, where South film composer Thaman S. is called in just to do that clichéd Kuthu rhythm we are all bored of. Brijesh Shandilya does well as the lead male singer, but Aditi Singh Sharma sounds utterly replaceable. She gets another song, Itna Sannata Kyun Hai, composed by Lijo George and DJ Chetas, where her part towers over her male co-singer Amit Mishra’s parts. The hookline is like a desperate scream in our ears, to make noise. The EDM after the hookline is so bad, I can’t describe it. Amaal Mallik, lead composer, gets two songs, where one is obviously a 90s remake. ‘Neend Churayi Meri’ (Ishq) is the privileged song, named by the company as Maine Tujhko Dekha. The song’s best part is that Neeraj Sridhar returns after a long time to sing a song that is tailor-made for his song. Sukriti Kakar complements him well, but the song is better as an individual song than it is as a remake. Had the hookline been original, it would have been amazing! Amaal’s second song happens to be the album’s best — Hum Nahi Sudhrenge gives those rays of positivity like ‘Apna Har Din’ did in ‘Golmaal 3’. Though the song is similar to Amaal’s other EDM numbers like “Sooraj Dooba Hai”, “Buddhu Sa Mann” and “Zindagi Aa Raha Hoon Main”, it works well because of its positivity and Armaan yet again sings charmingly! What Saregama holds of the album is an unplugged, slow-paced version of ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’s Aate Jaate Hanste Gaate, sung very simply by Nikhil D’Souza and Anushka Manchanda, and arranged soothingly by Abhishek Arora (of Abhishek-Akshay) and Samyuktha Narendran. It doesn’t work too much though, in spite of not changing much from the old song.
The worst Golmaal album is held up solely by Amaal’s songs (or song).

The songs by Sachin Gupta start off the album, and though they do not impress you immediately, you do get attuned to them on hearing them for a couple of times. Na Shukre is a wild rock song about carefree girls, and Smita Malhotra makes a rocking debut with her vocals in this, the rock guitars played wonderfully. Shivani Bhayana’s Naach Basanti, on the other hand, is a bit too rowdy to go with its amazing club arrangements, but apparently by the lyrics, it is supposed to be some sort of an ode to “Sholay”. Many of the small additions by Gupta in this song happen to catch your attention, like the techno sounds at the beginning, and the folksy portion at the end.
The newcomer composer, Nisschal Zaveri, steps in for the rest of the songs (with lyrics) and I must say, he does quite an amazing job in his first album itself. His lullaby-ish, classical-based Na Jaa appears in two versions, one in Asees Kaur’s voice, with a stark resemblance to her singing in ‘Kaari Kaari’ (Dobaara), while the other is in Nandini Srikar’s voice. Obviously, Nandini’s version wins my heart because of her seasoned voice and more classically inclined singing. The Tabla in this song has to be mentioned, as do the strings, guitars and mandolin. The arrangements overpower the voice of Asees in her version, another drawback of that version. Nandini’s version has everything that the music buff longs for in a good song.
Zaveri’s other song, released by Saregama, is a reprise of Shankar-Jaikishan-Mohd. Rafi classic Jia O Jia, and is an apt remake of the song, with an upbeat clubbish sound, one of the freshest remakes I’ve heard this year. The song feels like a splash of water on your face — despite being a remake, Zaveri uses his creativity to make it a bit unconventional, without being bogged down by the thought of what’s popular these days. The synth has been used amazingly, and the backing chorus singing “Jia O” after every hook is just sweet! Jyotica sounds amazing in this song, the least she has sounded like Neha Kakkar ever! But Rashid Ali, being heard after a long time, falls flat due to the excessive programming done to his voice. The Latino turn of sound midway into the song takes time to get used to, but is awesome!
The background score composer for the film, Sameer Nichani, gets one of his instrumental pieces added to the album, and it is called Jia Aur Jia Theme, and is heavy on Spanish guitars, played in a very sensuous way. It is extremely short at one and a half minute, but soothes your senses for all its worth.
A hidden gem of an album, wherein we find a new composer who must get many, many more songs in Bollywood!! Zaveri scores higher than Gupta here.

Waiting is an upcoming Bollywood comedy/drama movie starring Kalki Koechlin and Naseeruddin Shah in the lead roles, and Rajat Kapoor, Suhasini Maniratnam and Arjun Mathur in supporting roles. The movie is directed by Anu Menon (director of ‘London, Paris, New York’ and co-director of ‘X: Past Is Present’) and produced by Priti Gupta and Manish Mundra. The film was premiered at the Dubai International Film Festival in December 2015. It was also showcased at the London Asian Film Festival, and Menon had won the award for the best director at that festival. The film, received well by critics at these events, is now set to release this summer. The film revolves around two married (not to each other) individuals, Shiv Kumar (Naseeruddin Shah) and Tara Deshpande (Kalki Koechlin), who are from different walks of life. They befriend each other at the hospital, while they visit and nurse their respective spouses, who are both comatose! The story is one which deals with coping with grief and finding a way towards hope at the same time, and it definitely seems unique! The music is by Mikey McCleary. Last year, Mikey had scored for Kalki’s ‘Margarita With A Straw’, which I had reviewed and rated it with the highest rating on the blog; that’s how much I had loved it. While that album had a full-fledged nine-track album, this one is a short one with four tracks, but I’m still very excited to hear them! Mikey McCleary and such ‘art films’ as I would call it, go hand in hand! So, let’s see whether Mikey impresses again after ‘Margarita With A Straw!’


1. Tu Hai Toh Main Hoon
Singers ~ Anushka Manchanda & Nikhil D’Souza, Lyrics by ~ Manoj Muntashir

A very engaging guitar riff opens up this sweet and simple little track. The breeze of freshness that hits the ears when this one starts, is something that I’ve not experienced in a long time! Anushka Manchanda starts off in a quite low-pitched, husky voice, unlike most songs she has sung for other composers. However, the singer, who is a regular in most of Mikey’s works, usually sings with this voice texture for the composer. The composition by Mikey is really breezy, fresh, and brisk. I don’t think anything can match its utter simplicity, and the best part is that, in spite of being so elementary and basic, it manages to appeal much more to the ears, than other compositions based on classical raagas etc, do these days. This one will appeal to not many people, though, since it is really unconventional to be soooo utterly fundamental and straightforward in composition, at least in Bollywood. But I say, that is the sheer magic of the song. The medium pace, and breezy composition are stunners. Anushka sounds great, and Nikhil just accompanies her almost like a backing vocalist, not making it much of a duet. Both having husky voices, the song seems to appeal more. In some places, I felt Anushka sounded very much like Shalmali! Arrangements are simpler than simple, if that is even possible. Acoustic guitars are what form the base of the arrangements. Harmonica is audible in places, and so are strings. Drums have been played so softly, it took me some times of hearing the song to even notice them! And that’s way better than the bombardment of drum sounds we get in rock songs nowadays! Manoj Muntashir’s lyrics are just as simple as the composition, and really sweet. Not something that will create history, and not something that will win many hearts, but once it wins your heart, that is the ultimate stage! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

2. Got My Eyes On You
Singer ~ Mikey McCleary, Lyrics by ~ Mikey McCleary

I don’t know what I was expecting, looking at the title, but it was definitely not this! I thought it must be some romantic song, as breezy as the previous one. But boy, was I wrong! To some extent. 😛 The song is indeed breezy, and romantic too, if you think about it. On top of all this, it is reallllllly groovy too! The song starts with the trademark retro rock-n-roll rhythm and a tune after which you are 99.99% sure that they will say “Mera naam chinchin choo, chin chin choo” after that. The rhythm is so so infectious, you will not believe that it is a song composed today, and you will think it is an old song from the 50s-60s era of rock-n-roll. Those English songs of those days, which play in the parties in English movies, or the Bollywood songs of the Shammi Kapoor era, fall into the same category as this one. The composition is as infectious as something can get. You can’t help but move and groove like those old black-and-white people. 😂 The arrangements unbelievably resemble the arrangements of those days, with the drums, guitars and those funny sounds with the horns, tambourines. The trumpet tune that goes on in a loop in the background is just amazingly awesome, with that catchy groove coming with it. I’ve never heard Mikey singing in such a grungy voice, and I have to say, hats-off to the man, for singing it with such gusto. Though he seems like a stalker singing those words. 😀 Which brings us to the lyrics, which are purely in English. The lyrics definitely seem like the man is stalking some lady, but they’re so fun and go perfectly with the era. Also, they’re not cheap! (Ahem, ‘Housefull 3’!) A great experience, and a perfect throwback to the 50s rock and roll era! Wonderful!! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

3. Waiting For You
Singers ~ Mikey McCleary & Anushka Manchanda, Lyrics by ~ Mikey McCleary

Here comes what we can call the title song of the movie, crooned by the composer himself and Anushka Manchanda. This one too, is totally in English. This composition, though not as easily likable as the first two, takes two listens at least to impress you to the fullest. Mikey has made a lovely, waltz-ish composition, which again, won’t appeal to all. However, I loved it. Though not very breezy, and with more of pathos in it, it appeals because of the sense of calm that is omnipresent all over the song. The song doesn’t try hard to gain attention or listeners, and I think that is what makes it appeal the most — its honesty and truthfulness. The arrangements too, are minimal, with acoustic guitar, harmonica, and a xylophone-ish sound (which is really cute!) Again, the guitars form the base. At one place in the song, there is a wonderful ballroom waltz-like ambience, with the royal drums, and that xylophone-ish sound (which is probably a keyboard). Mikey and Anushka handle the composition with care, and do complete justice to the heartfelt melody. Mikey gets the major portion of the song, and here, you can understand why I was shocked to hear his grungy voice in ‘Got My Eyes On You’! It is wonderful how he had modified it for that song! Anushka in her part that continues from the second stanza, excels too. Mikey’s lyrics, are cute as usual, and something sweet and simple, that would appeal to all. A cute song, with a Westernized treatment, and made with love! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

4. Zara Zara
Singers ~ Kavita Seth & Vishal Dadlani, Lyrics by ~ Ankur Tiwari

For the grand finale, Mikey gets more Indianised in his song composition style. And I noticed, with that, he gets more complicated in the composition’s structure, too! Piano chords and subtle notes with them, open up the song for us, and as I always say, one should know that when a song is preceded by piano notes, magic lies ahead. That is exactly what we get to see in this song. As soon as Kavita starts singing with her unexplainably beautiful, marvellous, fabulous, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious voice, the goosebumps get a cordial invitation to join the ceremony! And indeed, the composition is no less than ceremonious. The grandeur, soul and heart in this composition is something I’ve found in very less songs this year. Most that try, manage to be overdramatic too! This one seems to have done it effortlessly! The layered composition is something that is instantly likable and utterly un-hateable! Especially the hookline, is the ultimate bliss! When the hookline manages to catch hold of you in the first listen itself, you know the song is of some different level altogether! The mukhda is really catchy, though being a sad song. That is really rare, and when it happens, my heart does the Irish jig. (I know that’s mean when those characters in the movie are mentally dying, but what should I do? 😦 ) Mikey has composed a really melodious and mature composition, and so close to Indian music and Indian roots, and that leaves me wondering how!!!? His arrangements are just as majestic. The piano, already mentioned above, is replaced by many others like strings, flutes, drums, rock guitars and some Indian percussion too. My favourite is the hookline, where the rock arrangements do the whole magic, blended with the strings and in some places, the flute. Previously I had said Kavita’s voice made me get goosebumps, but when Vishal kicks in, the song reaches its apex! It is a scintillating moment in the song when that happens. It’s just wow! Both the singers have done justice to the composition and rendered it with heart and soul. Ankur has written mind-blowing lyrics… I think it is his career’s best! Vishal and Kavita bring those words to life with their pathos-filled rendition. A complete winner! The most complete song of the album in terms of everything put together. Mikey going the traditional Indian melodious way is nothing but great!!! It will appeal to all Bollywood lovers and everyone else too! Something fit for the finale! #5StarHotelSong!!


Waiting was an album I was really waiting for since forever. After I learnt about the cast, story and then the composer, my excitement knew no bounds. And then the promos of two songs just made me even desperate to hear the full album. And that’s why, when it released out of nowhere today, I chose to review it today itself! Mikey has done a wonderful job with all the songs, with two of them being completely Western in treatment, one going retro style, and the last one being a lovely Indian-style composition, which is the only song on the soundtrack, which probably, everyone will love. After hearing the album, all I can say is, “What are you waiting for?? Hear ‘Waiting’!!

Yes I’m late for my ‘ABCD 2’ Music Review, but today, 14th June, is Sachin Sanghvi of Sachin-Jigar’s birthday, so how about posting it as his birthday gift? 😀 So happy birthday, Sachin, and keep providing us with those infectious tunes with Jigar’s help!!

ABCD 2 is an upcoming Bollywood dance film, starring Varun Dhawan, Shraddha Kapoor and Prabhudheva in the lead roles, and Dharmesh Yelande, Raghav Juyal (Crockroaxz) and Lauren Gottlieb in supporting roles. The film has been directed by Remo D’Souza, and produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur. The film revolves around the struggle of choreographers Suresh (Varun Dhawan) and Vinnie (Shraddha Kapoor) from Nalasopara, a suburb in Mumbai, who go on to win the World Hip-Hop Dance Championship. The movie is a sequel to the 2013 film ‘ABCD – Any Body Can Dance’, with everything bigger and larger than before. A bigger starcast — what with some youth heartthrobs joining the bandwagon, a bigger budget — it’s shot in Las Vegas. A bigger everything, basically. So it is just natural for us to expect a bigger soundtrack too, in terms of both number of songs and quality and also appeal. The duo who has worked very hard in order to reach this stage in their career, where they’re giving us great album after year album, Sachin-Jigar, for whom the album of the first film was a turning point, return to compose for the album, along with 10 songs!! So I’m gonna dive right into this “expectedly” great album that I expect to be bigger than its prequel! 🙂 Let’s find out what we get!


1. Bezubaan Phir Se
Singers ~ Vishal Dadlani, Anushka Manchanda & Madhav Krishna, Rap by ~ Vishal Dadlani, Lyrics by ~ Mayur Puri

As it is clear from the title of the song, the makers of the film have decided to remake and represent the most famous song of the first film, the song that got the film a name and an identification of its own, ‘Bezubaan’, and since they’ve made it again (re-made) they add the words ‘Phir Se’ to the title, which don’t actually appear in the song. So, the song starts with that tune which has gotten itself to be recognized as the characteristic tune of ‘ABCD’, much like we had one for the ‘Dhoom’ franchise, the ‘Race’ films and even for ‘Ra.One’. This time, though, it doesn’t take shape with the help of rock guitars, but with the help of ancient Chinese-sounding flutes. And they haunt you, at the same time grabbing your attention and making you crave for more. Also, the original song was so great, that you can just expect something more great in this sequel to that song, which the starting assures you, that you will get. Where the first song was a soulful, soft number sung smoothly and calmly by Mohit Chauhan along with some electrifying English rap portions in the middle and a scintillating hookline by Priya Panchal, this version of it is dynamic all the way! When you have a vocal powerhouse such as Vishal Dadlani onboard, what else would you expect? And Vishal very efficiently carries the song on his two shoulders. Infusing the right amount of energy and enjoyability in the song as is required, and also as much as is possible, he zips through the song like a lightning bolt, spreading the zing as he goes. This time, there is very little English rap, but mostly, a catchy Hindi rap, written and sung by Vishal too, very effectively. Anushka Manchanda has a very brief portion, but she soothes us down in that small portion, before and after which Vishal spreads his enthusiasm again. The disappointing part in the vocals, though, is Madhav Krishna with the hookline, which doesn’t sound properly in place after Vishal’s virally infectious parts. After Vishal builds up the climax, it ends quite abruptly at the hookline, leaving you thinking that something is missing. Sachin-Jigar have wonderfully composed the new parts surrounding the hookline, and those parts are very catchy, but again, the hookline itself seems out-of-place somewhat. Their arrangements do make up for it however. New and cool techno sounds, with those electric guitars, really make your day whenever you hear the song, and may even serve as your daily dose of energy! That tabla in Anushka’s part is hard to make out, but when you do hear it, you’ll get goosebumps — it’s that awesome! Again, the percussion part at the end, this time starting off with African beats, seems very flat in front of what we had got to hear in the first song. And Taufiq Qureshi is there, in this song too! Was expecting a lot more from him but this is satisfactory! If only this wasn’t a remake, I wouldn’t be comparing at all! Mayur Puri’s lyrics are brilliant like they always are, and the inspirational factor in them hasn’t gone anywhere between the first song and this one! 🙂 A bit disappointing when compared to the original, but definitely an enjoyable start to the album! I know it must be challenging to remake one of your own songs, so no problem!!

 

2. Sun Saathiya
Singers ~ Priya Saraiya & Divya Kumar, Lyrics by ~ Priya Saraiya

The next song is another song that we are familiar with, thanks to the first film. However, the makers hadn’t included it in the OST, but had kept it in the film. That was kind of unreasonable, because it was one of the best songs in the film. After that, the makers got a lot of requests from the audience to release the song as a single, and after two years, the audience’s wish comes true in the form of this song. We get a full, proper song with a mukhda and antara, of which only the mukhda was included in the first film. The duo and Priya Panchal Saraiya have developed the song further, resulting in a song to cherish. The ever-reliable piano intro (it always works, no matter how many times you use it) absorbs you into the song right from the moment it starts. Then Priya, with her smooth-flowing vocals, transports us to dreamland, literally, and we forget all the dimensions of time and space, our ears only open to Sachin-Jigar’s melodious composition, and a wonderful combination of Priya and Divya’s voices. Divya carries put his parts wonderfully, not stumbling anywhere while singing that fast-paced sargam, and he shocks us with his classically perfect rendition. His rustic vocals provide a great contrast to Priya’s more fine vocals, and it sounds brilliant when they have been put together. Priya’s lyrics are great as well, romantic and having an easily-memorizable quality to them. But what really stands out are the duo’s arrangements, a fantastic amalgamation of classical instruments like the tablas, and Western instruments like the piano, violins and even a small drum part somewhere! The violin comes in the interlude, and soothes you down a lot, especially because of Divya’s sargam, wonderfully blended with it. Overall, a nice gift to the audience from Sachin-Jigar, Priya and Divya, wherein we had to wait for two years, but the end result is totally worth it!! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

3. Chunar
Singer ~ Arijit Singh, Lyrics by ~ Mayur Puri

As soon as the next song starts, you are reminded of the haunting, but soothing music that you get to hear in a typical Sanjay Leela Bhansali album. But this time, it is relatively younger composers, Sachin-Jigar trying their hand at this genre. And they succeed, everything in the song as perfect as possible. First of all, I would like to praise Arijit, who, after singing many songs of the same type and feel, finally sings a song which nobody can call a ‘typical Arijit Singh song’. His nuances are brilliant, and ultimately, it is his textured voice that makes you fall for the track. Everything else falls in place later on because, it just so happens that the first time you hear the track, you notice nothing but Arijit. In subsequent listens, you start taking in more and more from the track and that’s why, you end up loving it even more after many listens. Sachin-Jigar’s melody, as I said, is perfectly haunting and very, very touching, suitable for Mayur’s even more touching lyrics. While ‘Meri Maa’ (Yaariyan) was the best “Ode-To-Mother” song of last year, this year’s has definitely got to be ‘Chunar’, what with the really heart-touching lyrics by Mayur, and the suitably emotional-izing tune to it. If you think this is too many awesome things in one song, wait till you hear about the arrangements, because I’m yet to tell you about them! It starts off with wonderful, haunting sound of a string instrument (turns out it’s a harp, as Sachin said here when I asked him), which just draws you in, after which you cannot escape until the song is over. It sounds like it’s a classical instrument and that’s why I was really surprised to know it’s a harp!! It’s been given a great classical effect! Kudos to the duo for that! It plays constantly in the background for the whole mukhda, after which comes a stunning interlude, something so cool that you won’t believe your ears! Techno sounds coupled with an electric-sounding sitar, wow!! And those vocals! It makes for a wonderful listen! The beats that accompany Arijit in the parts where the harp is silent, are awesome too! Techno beats in a semi-classical composition, sounds awesome! Heart-touching, emotional, and beautifully written, sung and composed!!! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

4. Happy Birthday
Singers ~ Sachin Sanghvi, Jigar Saraiya, Varun Dhawan & D. Soldierz, Lyrics by ~ Mayur Puri, D. Soldierz

In the next song, Sachin-Jigar and Mayur Puri take us one year back, when ‘Johnny Johnny’ had become a rage in the nation. The same insanity, quirkiness, catchiness and infectious nature of that song, returns in this song. While it starts with ignorable dialogues that go away quickly, the parts that follow will have you grooving before you know it! The fact that none of the singers, except Varun Dhawan in some places, are recognizable due to the over-the-top programming done to the voices, can easily be ignored too, because the tune of what they’re singing, is something that is too hard to resist. The composers themselves get behind the mic, and program their own voices so weirdly, that the weirdness starts to sound genius! The various voices they obtained by programming their voices, are really funny and apt for such an energetic and crazy, wacky song. D. Soldierz, a Delhi based Punjabi music duo, has been well utilized in the song, and the line they have sung is what got me to like this song so much, it’s just composed so well by Sachin-Jigar! The beats in the song do resemble those of ‘Johnny Johnny’ a lot, but no complaints! They’re actually really infectious beats! The female voice going “Awww” so many times in the song, sounds so great!! Varun’s rap has been programmed too much as well, and so it sounds very weird when he says some lines after his rap, in his real voice! Mayur’s lyrics here, are quirky and well-suited to the requirements of the song. D. Soldierz have also written a few lines, I guess the ones they sang. 😂😂 I know, I don’t get any prize for guessing that! The duration of the song has been kept really short at just three minutes, which is just right for such a song. An overdose might make all the listeners crazy! (I mean that positively 😂) By now Sachin-Jigar have become experts at giving the public something that they will 100000% love!! This song joins the ranks of ‘Khoon Choos Le’, ‘Johnny Johnny’, ‘Paaji Tussi Such A Pussy Cat’ and ‘G Phaad Ke’! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

5. If You Hold My Hand
Singer ~ Benny Dayal, Lyrics by ~ Mayur Puri

With each song of the album showing us a different genre, this one comes to the tried-and-tested breezy romance formula, which the ranks of Vishal-Shekhar, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Pritam have done many, many times in the past. This song too, falls in the category of songs which have a mix of English and Hindi lyrics, but actually make sense, and make you want to snap your fingers along to the catchy hookline. Sachin-Jigar go into typical Vishal-Shekhar’s ‘Anjaana Anjaani’, ‘I Hate Luv Storys’ etc, mode for this one, with the familiar-sounding “Oh-oh-ohhh” chorus, and that peppy tune of the lines “You Calling Out For Me, You Got Me On My Knees”, plus that unmistakably Vishal-Shekhar-ish hookline. Benny the rockstar carries it out with ease, managing both the English and Hindi parts effortlessly. He is back after quite some time, all the way after ‘Bang Bang’, and this is his first Hindi song this year to release! There are female backing vocals to support him, which sound suspiciously enough, like Shefali Alvares. And some more in another place sounding like Priya Saraiya. 😅 Arrangements are nice and relaxing, with all the techno sounds placed in a great, calming way. Mayur’s lyrics are good, and thank God they make sense, because some songs mixing Hindi and English make no sense at all. Yes, there are some place in the beginning where the words don’t rhyme in the line that follows, but the tune and Benny’s vocals covers that part up. Did Sachin-Jigar compose this or Vishal-Shekhar!? 😄 An awesome composition which kind of seems like Sachin-Jigar are paying a tribute to Vishal-Shekhar! Awesome, catchy composition, lyrics that are easy to grasp, and a wonderful and engaging performance by Benny! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

6. Hey Ganaraya
Singer ~ Divya Kumar, Lyrics by ~ Mayur Puri

We were treated with a semi-classical ‘Chunar’ earlier in the album, only to be surprised with a full-fledged classical piece later on, in the form of ‘Hey Ganaraya’. The harp is used once again, in a very traditionally Indian way, to start off the song. It is a song overflowing with divinity and devotion, which would surely arouse the faith and bhakti in you. In the first film,,we had two power-packed, dynamic and dhamaakedaar Lord Ganesha songs ‘Shambhu Sutaya’ and ‘Sadda Dil Vi Tu’, but in this film, there is a sole Lord Ganesha song, which is focused in its path, and never diverting from its path. A serious devotional song was definitely not expected, but now that we have got it, I cannot do anything but praise it. Divya Kumar, who was on backing vocals in ‘Shambhu Sutaya’ (identifiable, but uncredited) gets to carry this one solely on his shoulders. Once more, he gets to showcase his versatility and also his effortlessness in performing the sargam. Additional voices supporting him, have done stupendous work, wonderful tabla bols, and an uptempo piece that makes up an interlude, in a pretty Garba-esque style. Sachin-Jigar’s composition is full of the required feel of devotion — that haunting sound, which ironically drives all the fear out of your mind! Their composition is most probably based on a raaga, and makes sure not to steer away from the classical genre even once. Arrangements are unbelievable, as well. The traditional instruments like tablas, dhols and nagada, have been equipped very, very well. The conclusion to the song, has to be paid very close attention to, especially if you are a classical music lover. The tabla solo will just blow you away! Mayur Puri’s lyrics have that ‘pray-and-call-out-to-God-when-in-dilemma’ feel in them, and I think all of us can relate to them in some way or the other. Many of Lord Ganesha’s names have been used, and sound beautiful the way they have been incorporated into the song! A full-fledged classical delight, nothing less!! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

7. Happy Hour
Singer ~ Mika Singh, Lyrics by ~ Mayur Puri

After the devotional classical song, a mandatory ‘drunkard’ song, which is necessary in all of today’s albums, jumps unto the album. But this one is a bit different from all those irritating songs. This one has a catchy and addictive starting to it, made up of techno sounds and a tune that wouldn’t really make you turn away and skip the song in disgust. Instead, it makes you eager to listen on, to see what is in store for you in the rest of the song. Well, I know not many have liked this song (in fact, I’m probably the only one I know who loves it…) but I don’t know what’s the problem in it. First of all, the slow-paced the which acts as slow poison, gives it the infectious feeling it should have, making it join the ranks of the classic ‘Intehaan Ho Gayi Intezaar Ki’ in terms of tempo, and the composition too seems a bit inspired from that song. A depressed soul, drinking the night away, blurting out his emotions, but no moments which will have you scrunch your face in disgust, no disturbing moments at all. Half of this, thanks to the incredibly humourous lyrics by Mayur Puri, which have been rendered just as comically by Mika. As I said, the composition takes time to grow, and I’m not sure if it will grow or not, either! It has many abrupt twists and turns and tempo changes, which might seem weird at first, but blend in, in no time. But it did on me, so I hope that at least someone else is on my side regarding this song! 😀 Sachin-Jigar’s arrangements are interesting as well, with those weird yet creative sounds starting off the song, and the beats on which the whole song plays. In the hookline, those techno pinball-like sounds are so catchy! And the interlude, with the unexpected dhols, is awesome too, played at a higher tempo. Divya Kumar, identifiable in the backing vocals, does good too. The conclusion to this song is also extraordinary, with the tempo increase and the high-energy arrangements of techno sounds. Something that will grow on you with time; something really enjoyable and catchy! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

8. Naach Meri Jaan
Singers ~ Benny Dayal, Shalmali Kholgade, Siddharth Basrur & Rimi Nique, Lyrics by ~ Mayur Puri & Rimi Nique

Here comes another genre, another feel and another sound to the album. This time Sachin-Jigar bring in a perfect Latino-flavoured dance track, with just the right arrangements that help us groove to the beats. The opening techno sounds are just enough to grab your attention, mostly because of their attractive sound and also the catchy tune! After that, Brazilian trumpets and percussion kick in, making the Latino ambience more prominent. Benny Dayal gets his second song in the album, and he starts off with a bang, singing an effective intro to the song. Though Shalmali is part of the song, she has been surprisingly kept in the background, with the main female vocals belonging to Rimi Nique,  of ‘India’s Raw Star’ and ‘The Voice Thailand’ fame, making a powerful and perfect Bollywood singing debut, with an energetic dance number. Her smooth and sugary vocals provide a great contrast between the upbeatness of the song and themselves. She could very well become the new club sensation after Shefali Alvares and Shalmali Kholgade, in the upcoming months. Out of Siddharth Basrur and Shalmali in the background, Shalmali can be heard and identified in her parts, since her voice doesn’t really match with Rimi’s, but I couldn’t identify Siddharth anywhere, because I’ve never really got hold of what he sounds like from his earlier songs. Rimi’s English solo towards the end, is awesome, with those Brazilian beats supporting her. The song makes you feel as if you are in a Carnival in Brazil, itself! Mayur and Rimi work together in writing the song, with Mayur most probably behind the Hindi lyrics and Rimi in charge of the English ones. The lyrics are entertaining, yet nothing out of the box. Though everything falls right into its place, Sachin-Jigar’s composition and arrangements are what makes this a must-listen! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

9. Tattoo
Singer ~ Shefali Alvares, Lyrics by ~ Mayur Puri

The next song starts very, very dynamically and extremely addictively, with the freaky vocals going “Ayy-ay-ay-ay-ay-ay-ayy”, sounding a lot like they’ve been sung by Hard Kaur, followed by Shefali’s rhythmic lines that build up the suspense up until the very attractive hookline arrives. The uniqueness in Shefali’s voice works in favour of the song once again after her three songs in ‘Bombay Velvet’, and gives it a Western feel, although the lyrics, composition and beats try to keep it as desi as possible. Her rendition is really one of the best in her career in this song, unlike those songs where she gets to be following the footsteps of the male singer, and sing stuff we hardly notice all around the male singer’s lines. Here, she gets the whole song to herself, and doesn’t miss the opportunity to make it as worthwhile as she could. Sachin-Jigar’s addictive tune has to be praised too, of course for this, as it is something, the type of which we haven’t heard for quite some time in Bollywood, a masala-meets-urban type of dance track. Especially the hookline, they have composed really well, and it is something that you can’t just remove from your mind once you’ve heard it! Their beats, too are groovy and foot-tapping, making sure you enjoy yourself all throughout the duration of the song. The various experimentations that have been tried out, also do not fail to impress, and sound really cool. The interludes are mostly made of these weird sounds, that really attract you towards the song. The tune of the line “Ishq insane hai you know” is really catchy as well. Mayur Puri has also written pretty fitting lyrics to the genre of the song, perfectly mixing youth lingo with the desi words. Sensational!! The beats will make you awestruck!! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

10. Vande Mataram
Singers ~ Daler Mehndi, Tanishka Sanghvi, Badshah & Divya Kumar, Lyrics by ~ Mayur Puri & Badshah

The grand finale to the album starts in a very grand manner, with the youngest singer in the album starting it off, Tanishka Sanghvi, Sachin’s daughter, singing in perfect rhythm! We heard her in Sachin-Jigar’s ‘Coke Studio @ MTV Season 4’ episode in the song ‘Laadki’, and here she debuts in Bollywood, with the perfect song, a patriotic anthem. Daler Mehndi, rarely heard nowadays in Bollywood, backs her up with even more grand lines in his deep and impactful voice, also singing the hookline, a new take on the national song of India, ‘Vande Mataram’, which Sachin-Jigar have woven with genuine and true love for the country, as is evident in the result. Recent so-called patriotic songs in Bollywood like ‘India Waale’ (Happy New Year) haven’t managed to achieve as much emotional connect as this one does. While that one seemed like fake patriotism, this one actually awakens the patriot in you, and gives you a proud feeling to be an Indian. Another great feat that the duo has achieved with this song, is incorporating what might be the best rap ever in Bollywood in recent days, performed by Badshah. Of course, the no-nonsense and meaningful quality of the rap helps the rap to sound so good. It is full-on desh-bhakt rap written and performed wonderfully by Badshah. (Yup, that same guy who did ‘Saturday Saturday’ and ‘Abhi Toh Party Shuru Hui Hai’ raps.) Isn’t it unbelievable?! The unexpected ‘Chunar’ incorporation into the song also comes as a pleasant surprise, with Divya Kumar getting to do the honours along with Daler paaji. As it concludes with all the more grandeur, you can’t help but let the tears that were, till now, held back, escape. The “Sujalam Suphalam” chants help to conclude the song, with Divya Kumar and Daler Mehndi performing perfect, heart-touching aalaaps, and finally, Tanishka almost ending it all with her rendition of “Shubhra jyotsnaam phulkit yaamini…” before Divya and Dealer come back yet again to provide the perfect, energetic finale to the seven-minute long track. You must’ve noticed I’ve nowhere mentioned about the duration, and that’s just because I wanted to get you acquainted with how worthy the song us of your full-fledged attention for each second of these seven minutes. Sachin-Jigar’s arrangements are mostly dhols and other traditional instruments like manjeeras and a wonderful shehnaai / nadaswaram solo during Badshah’s awesome rap. The energy of the arrangements is so high, that you won’t even notice each of the instruments as an individual, but will remember them as a team. Mayur’s lyrics are full of patriotism, not the fake kind, but this time, true and genuine affection for the homeland. Tanishka with her innocence, Daler with his dynamics, Divya with his heart-toucfing performance, and Badshah with one for the best raps in Bollywood’s history together with Sachin-Jigar’s GENIUS patriotic composition, make this song something to cherish!! A seven-minute-long patriotic treat!! VANDE MATARAM!! #5StarHotelSong!!


As per the huge expectations, ABCD 2 indeed surpasses the sequel in all aspects, musically, and how!! The contrast that each track brings about, is indescribable, and Sachin-Jigar’s successful experimentations in each of them is yet another applaudable thing. They prove their versatility yet again, with an album that contains everything for everyone, from the masses to the classes! Though ‘Bezubaan Phir Se’ does disappoint when compared to the original ‘Bezubaan’, everything else is just spot-on when it comes to the departments of music, composition, lyrics and vocals. The mass appeal of each of the tracks, is also very high! Sachin-Jigar at the peak of innovation and experimentation!! ABCD 2 – Artistic, Brilliant, Creative and Deadly, Too!!

Margarita With A Straw is an upcoming Bollywood film, starring Kalki Koechlin in the lead role and Revathy and Sayani Gupta in supporting roles. The film has been directed by Shonali Bose, and produced by Shonali Bose & Nilesh Maniyar under the banner of Viacom18 Motion Pictures. The plot revolves around the character of Laila played by Kalki, a girl who has cerebral palsy. The movie talks about the struggle she goes through, in doing the normal activities in her life. The film was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) as a part of the Contemporary World Cinema Programme on 8th September, 2014 and got great reviews from everywhere. The music of this film has been given by Mikey McCleary, and he went on to win the Asian Film Award for Best Music Composer, for his work in this very film! This assures us that there is light to be something special in the music, or else it wouldn’t have won such a prestigious award! One song in two versions is also composed by guest composer Joi Barua. Let’s have a look at exactly how great the music of “Margarita With A Straw” is!!


1. Dusokute / Dusokute (Duet)

So the album kicks off with our guest composer, Joi’s song. This song was actually a song from Joi’s first Assamese album ‘JOI’, and he had composed and written it in his college days. However, now, he debuts in Bollywood with the same song, rewritten with Hindi lyrics, and giving the song a wider section of the audience to appeal to. The song starts with Joi’s unique, husky voice, which is kind of the main attraction of the song and will definitely keep you listening. His voice is perfect for this type of rock song. The electric guitar tune playing throughout the song, is something that would appeal to everyone and it has been composed so expertly! Arrangements consist of the regular rock music arrangements like rock guitars and drums. Towards the end, we get to hear a wonderful display of the brass section, which has been appointed very creatively in a rock song! Kudos to Joi for that! The first version is really short at 2½ minutes, but for those begging for more (I guess that applies to every one of us) there is another version — the Duet. The duet version runs for almost 5 minutes, and is surely going to appeal to you, if you have been left wanting more after the solo version. The first 2½ minutes are exactly the same as the solo version (except some lyrics), but after that we see some great new things which sets us into wonder, why they made two versions, if both are the same till a certain point! So I’ll just describe what happens after till where we’ve heard in the solo version. Joi sings some great, energetic lines from where he stopped in that version. Sharmistha takes over, with her equally husky and magical voice, and gets an equally energetic and rockstar-ish part to sing, which she manages with ease. An interlude of brass instruments entertains us until Sharmistha comes back with the hookline, a bit too high-pitched and mismatching for her voice, but we manage to bear with it, because rock performances are never that perfect anyways, so it sounds natural. After Joi comes back, he ends the song brilliantly with the mukhda which he sings after calling it the end. Great trumpet parts do wonders towards the ending of the song as well. Prasoon Joshi has written great lyrics, youthful but romantic at the same time. The term ‘Dusokute’, suggested by Joi, means ‘in your eyes’ in Assamese. Prasoon’s Hindi lyrics sound great around this catchy phrase. I would advise you to hear the duet version, because of the creative additions! A rocking and addictive composition by Joi! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

2. Foreign Balamwa

Mikey McCleary enters the soundtrack with this song, and along with him, his characteristic quirk and liveliness evident in all his compositions, also enters. And the result of this quirk is a thoroughly enjoyable, groovy, catchy, weirdly attractive and highly addictive composition which you instantly develop a liking towards. Most of the credit for all this has to go to Mikey, who seems to have worked very hard to master such a desi, yet classy number — two very opposite things coexisting in one song. First of all, the composition is so lovable, yet lively, that the notion of lovable being calm can be strongly proved wrong by just one listen to this song. Sweetness overflowing from the song, yet a sense of craziness also equally overflowing. This song is the whole package. Mikey’s arrangements are truly to be appreciated. Without noticing them, you just cannot end the song! The Calypso-type arrangements complete with the trumpets (Ketan Sodha), the percussion, guitars and some additional extra techno beats not usually witnessed in Calypso, all make it very attractive and exciting indeed. Very well-arranged, and recorded, hence winning half the battle there itself. The other half, not totally in Mikey’s hands. On the vocals front, he has appointed Sonu Kakkar, who does her job fascinatingly! Her electrifying voice, once used strictly for item songs, has now got the classy (at least a bit!) status, thanks to the entry of her sister Neha to do the item songs now. 😂 Jokes apart, she carries out all the nuances perfectly, creating a great positive impact on the song there itself. Her sharp, distinct and electrifying vocals really do impress and increase the likability standards for the song. She really does justice to the composition by providing the perfect blend of rowdiness and class. The best part is her improvisation in the ending. Though she might not have been instructed, she puts on a great show which is a pleasure to hear! Backing vocalists also count a lot, as is witnessed in this song. They make a huge difference and take the song a long way! Prasoon’s lyrics are highly and unbelievably creative! You have to hear them to believe it! He has also mixed awesomely, gaanv-ki-chhori type lyrics and English words, thereby making it very, very entertaining to hear. After reading this persuasive essay of mine, you are bound to listen to this song, at least once! For me, please!? A perfect song to cheer you up! Kudos to Mikey for making such a grand entry into the soundtrack! 😊 #5StarHotelSong!!

 

3. Choone Chali Aasman

For his second song, Mikey opts for the one-Bollywood-song old singer, Rachel Varghese, who had debuted with ‘Kya Karein’ from ‘NH10’ not long ago. This time, she gets an inspirational and much less dull song than the first one she sang, and she delivers it with great expertise. She has a distinct husky voice, and she uses it well, making it work in favourite if the song. Mikey’s choice as her to sing the song turns out to be perfect. Mikey’s composition is slow-paced, but engaging, and will remind you of Western songs, heard in English movies at emotional points in the films. The composition is also very inspirational, and lovable. This it might take a while to grow on you, when it does, you will find it really worthy of hearing again and again. Of course, the calmness it imparts, helps increase its likability. Mikey’s arrangements, consist mostly of instruments like guitars, jingle bells, and drums played in a calm way, unlike they are usually played. A great string orchestra has been appointed by Mikey to make it sound more grand, and indeed it does sound so. A very efficient backing chorus led by Mikey, increases the effect of the song even more! Prasoon Joshi, yet again, writes great lyrics, again putting us into a state of awe. His lyrics are at the inspirational peak! And so creative! He has used metaphors to carry out what is really meant to be said. Motivational, they give a sense of happiness as well. Mikey’s beautiful composition, rendered wonderfully by Rachel Varghese, and put to Prasoon Joshi’s awe-inspiring lyrics! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

4. Meri Aadat Mera Hissa

A mellow and sombre guitar riff, welcomes us into the next song, sung by Anushka Manchanda, who has worked with Mikey quite a number of times in his Bartender albums (which feature revisitations of classic Bollywood hits) This time, she gets a haunting, sad type of song, and she, who I always have tagged as strictly a club singer, carries it out with such perfection, that I was left awestruck, hearing this avatar of her voice. She has done a commendable job and has done justice to Mikey’s grave composition. Talking more about his composition, it has the perfect seriousness and emotion to it, that the lyrics call for, and also, the haunting tone of it, makes it much more feasible. Mikey has infused the right amounts of soul and heart into it, to make it attract all kinds of music lovers. The arrangements part has nothing except a chilling, sombre guitar riff which keeps playing throughout the whole song. It really does wonders, this small guitar loop, and makes the composition, which probably might not have worked as much without it, stand out. Prasoon manages to make us go all praise for his lyrics, one more time!! By writing what is in his heart, he manages to win over our hearts! Of course, the shining star in this short 2½ minute song, is Anushka, without whom half the effect of this song wouldn’t have been accomplished. A haunting, grave composition, rendered emotionally and perfectly by Anushka Manchanda! Great writing by Prasoon yet again! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

5. I Need A Man

Just as the jazzy trombones and saxophones start this song, you know that you are going to go on a short, but memorable trip to the Jazz era of the 60s. And indeed, this song does exactly that! Sung fully in English, in Broadway-styled vocals, like we hear in all those old English movies from the 50s-60s and also in many Disney movies (😃) this song, lively, energetic and dynamic, does nothing but get you swaying and moving along with it. Vivienne Pocha, mostly known for her backing vocals in many Bollywood movies, and also heard in songs like ‘Shano Shano’ (Yuvvraaj) & ‘Loser’ (Housefull), renders this song with such unbelievable energy, that you really are left shocked by the time it ends. Her accent closely resembles that of the African-American singers who actually used to sing such songs, and she really has to be applauded for that! Her voice modulation is terrific, and her energy doesn’t seem to be drained out even after such vivacious singing! Kudos to her again for that! The arrangements also resemble a lot, the Jazz-Cabaret era of that time, with drums, saxophones, trombones, all placed in the song perfectly and played very playfully. The playful tune also helps to increase the song’s appeal. It will surely appeal to those looking for a change in the music of Bollywood. Mikey’s lyrics are nothing too great, either, but suit the theme and the style of the song. What matters is, that the song should be liked by one and all, and I really hope it is! Vivienne Pocha finally comes into the limelight with a song to call her very own, thanks to Mikey!! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

6. Don’t Go Running Off Anytime Soon

The next song, is another English one, this time out-and-out romantic. Well, Bollywood seems to have derived a whole formula for romantic songs, what with the whole Arijit revolution having happened and all, but this song doesn’t follow that formula at all. Nevertheless, it still has the same vibe and lovable aspect to it, which makes you smile and like it instantly. First of all, Mikey has kept things very simple, with a very sweet and straightforward composition, no twists and turns, very predictable, yet a winner. It is a song, the type of which we have never witnessed in Bollywood, wholly in English, romantic, no Indian instruments, only a simple tune backed by simple acoustic guitar riffs. The sweetness and simplicity of it all, is the USP of the song here. Sweet and cute lyrics by Mikey enhance the hearing experience (I don’t mean audio-quality-wise, but I mean that you would love the song even more). Lines such as “You’re Little Miss Organized and I’m Mr. Mess” and “You yell at me whenever I leave stuff in the sink.” make it seem all the more simple, and also less and less cinematic and dramatic. It sounds as of someone in real-life has composed it for his love, and not for a movie. That just makes it more magical as ever. Mikey’s thin voice works in favour of the song. His voice is really great, and attracts listeners, ensuring they have their attention completely towards the song for the whole time. Just as the previous two songs, this one too ends before we know it, and before we want it to. As Leonardo da Vinci said, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication!” And this song is sophisticated in all aspects, just because of the simplicity it, so innocently, carries! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

7. Aai’s Aalap
Singer ~ Rajnigandha Shekhawat, Music by ~ Mikey McCleary

We return to India, with the next track. Rajnigandha Shekhawat, Sufi singer from Rajasthan, carries out the aalaps in the song with perfection, and her voice actually suits as the voice of a distressed mother. (Aai means ‘mother’ in Marathi). She does a brilliant job as she carries the song on her shoulders, assisted by wonderful arrangements done by Mikey. The predominant instrument in the track is the piano, which makes the track showcase a wonderful fusion of classical and Western. Tanpura At places also has been placed well, and the sitar also sounds awesome when it is heard in pieces here and there. Towards the end, the low sound of a cello or viola impresses, after which a beautiful plucking sound endears us. Overall, the song gives out an emotional feeling, one that will surely be loved by all. With nothing much more to describe in this track, as it has no lyrics, and no tune as such, all that can be advised is, to definitely hear this track! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

8. Laila’s Theme

Bollywood’s obsession with ‘themes’ of the main character of its movies continues with this song. Although, there’s nothing not to like in this instrumental piece. The piano notes, played in such a dulcet, calm way, do the job of keeping the listeners with their ears glued to wherever they’re listening to the song from. The beats join in after a while, and make the theme a bit more lively and groovy (as in, to which you can nod your heads to, not get up and dance!) Strings join in later on, just to increase the already magical ambience that had been created thanks to pianos and the beats. The theme also ends soon, as it seems, as you get immersed into the beauty of it all. However, everything has to end, and this ends too,unfortunately. Mikey’s cute composition and arrangements make it very worthwhile to hear. Many people steer clear of instrumentals, but this is one, I bet you don’t want to miss for anything!! #5StarHotelSong!!


Margarita With A Straw ended up exceeding all the expectations I had in mind for it, giving beautiful quality music, one after the other. Joi Barua as the guest composer gives a lively and funky rock song, while Mikey McCleary delivers his career best in my opinion (because he almost always gets one or two songs in multi-composer albums) by giving us a whole lot of variety, right from Caribbean folk, to Broadway, to contemporary music. No wonder he won the Asian Awards for this album. It was really worth it, and each and every second of this album deserves your attention, right away! It also needs to be heavily promoted to be noticed at all, by the public! So if you’ve not yet tried it, immediately go and taste this wonderfully blended music all cocktail by Mikey McCleary, Joi Barua & Prasoon Joshi!

Ungli is an upcoming Bollywood film, which is directed by Rensil D’Silva and produced by Karan Johar, Hiroo Yash Johar and Apoorva Mehta. It stars Emraan Hashmi, Kangana Ranaut, Randeep Hooda, Neil Bhoopalam and Angad Bedi as the “Ungli Gang”. Sanjay Dutt features in a negative role. The film revolves around the Ungli Gang and how they try to teach a lesson to the corrupt government officials. It is a film, which is way different from regular Dharma Production films, and also carries a social message. Rensil, who has directed ‘Kurbaan’ and the TV series ’24’ previously, returns with this film. While Salim-Sulaiman had composed the whole soundtrack for ‘Kurbaan’, this time they get but one song, and they are joined by three other composers, namely Sachin-Jigar, Gulraj Singh (Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s long time assistant and also composer of ‘Dil Tutiya’ film soundtrack) and Aslam Keyi (of ‘War Chhod Na Yaar’ fame). Gulraj Singh is the lucky guy with two songs, while the others have got one song each. Normally I cringe at the idea of a multi-composer album (there are some exceptions though, the most recent being “The Shaukeens”) but this time, I could sense something special, because Karan Johar always pays very close attention to the music in his productions. So let’s see if the Ungli album lives up to the Dharma standards or whether it lowers those standards.


1. Dance Basanti
Singers ~ Vishal Dadlani & Anushka Manchanda, Music by ~ Sachin-Jigar, Lyrics by ~ Amitabh Bhattacharya

Sachin-Jigar, the talented young duo, who are fresh from the success of the ‘Happy Ending’ album, get the privilege of starting off this album with their catchy tunes. Though they couldn’t quite prove themselves in their first collaboration with Karan Johar, this time they have made sure to set that right. An addictive flute hook starts off the song, and keeps repeating throughout the song. The flute gets interrupted by the tumbi, making the song suddenly sound very Punjabi-style still retaining the catchiness. Vishal’s interventions of “dance, da da da dance” increase the grasping power of the start. The starting itself is so catchy, so naturally the whole song after that follows the footsteps of the start. Vishal, with his energetic voice, is a perfect choice for this club dance number. He carries the whole song on his shoulders. Anushka Manchanda, surprisingly has only a rap portion, but that small portion is greatly effective as well. The antara though it might not appeal to you that much on the first listen, will grow on you slowly and you will find yourself loving that part of the song. The duo has made way better songs than this in the past and also in the most recent ‘Happy Ending’, but the song works perfectly for this movie and for a Karan Johar movie, these type of songs are expected and needed, too! Lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya are something which Shabbir Ahmed can write, but only after he (Shabbir) consults a psychiatrist. 😂 Nothing philosophical was expected anyways from this song’s lyrics, so whatever. Catchy and addictive! A typical Dharma club song, which will gradually appeal to all! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

2. Pakeezah
Singer ~ Gulraj Singh, Additional Vocals By ~ Raaga Trippin (ft. Gary Misquitta, Gwen Dias, Thomson Andrews, Keshia Braganza, Alan DeSouza, Suzanne D’Mello) Arpita Mukherjee, Sashaa Tirupati, Mugdha Hasabnis, Music by ~ Gulraj Singh, Lyrics by ~ Manoj Yadav

Fascinating and unique and also unusual vocals start off this song, kinda making it sound like those Christian choirs, very beautiful and refreshing. Gulraj Singh, who was the assistant of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy for a long time, has definitely got a lot of influence from their style of composition, and that reflects in his work as well. The guitar riffs resemble Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s typical guitar template, yet sound fresh to the ears. The melody itself is a strong, wonderful and grasping one, with an unusual and new sound, which gets even better mostly because of the magnificent backing vocals. The composition is an instantly lovable, sweet one, with many things that appeal to you and grab your attention. Firstly, as I said, the guitars are one of the main attractions after the backing vocals, and they give a nice rhythm to the song. Then come the flutes, and oh! What can I possibly say about them? They are so calming and soothing, that even Ankit Tiwari’s flute usage (he uses them brilliantly whenever he does, and no offense to him) seems ordinary in front of them! The sargam by the backing vocalists in the interlude, is not an ordinary one, and it has wonderful church choir touches. That whole part reminded me of brilliant genius Rahman compositions that just take your breath away! The antara has such a sweet, catchy and distinctive tune, that I liked it the most out of the whole song. Another great part is the hookline, “ishq tera mera rab se zyada…” which is also very catchy. Lyrics by Manoj Yadav are very beautiful as well, and I don’t remember him impressing that much before this song. This song makes you wonder why Gulraj Singh isn’t getting many, many more songs! A sweet, romantic composition which leaves you spellbound! A must-listen! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

3. Aadarniya Ungli

Well, the film revolves around corruption in the government offices, so one expects at least one satirical song, right? This expectation is met with the next song on the album, which Gulraj gets to compose. Techno sounds interlaced with catchy and unusual voices singing ungilingilingali give a booming start to the song. Vishal Dadlani, in his regular enthusiastic way of singing, starts well with a strong control over his vocals, knowing when and how to modulate them to give a great effect. The backing vocals in this song, again, are commendable and Gulraj Singh has used them just as good as in his former song, this time in a different genre so more bubbly and perky voices. Aditi Paul, Benny Dayal, Pinky Maidasani and the composer himself get the credit for those awesome voices. The aiyo’s and na-na-nana-nana’s and baba ri Baba’s are the main attractions of the backing chorus. Not to mention the cool “at your service” part! The arrangements add to the quirkiness and liveliness of the song. The rock guitars provide the most energy, and here too, the sitar pops in (it seems to be a featured instruments in the month of November! ‘Kill/Dil’, ‘The Shaukeens’ and now this!) and does a great job to add to the excitement. Neeti Mohan has a very small part which she sings well, but it would have been better if she would have got more space in the song. The lyrics by Manoj Yadav highlight the corrupt practices going on in the government nowadays. The reference to the middle finger as middle bai is hilarious! 😃 The state that the country is in nowadays, Manoj has perfectly described it through the lyrics, also covering the theme of the movie at the same time. Something unusual, but still very catchy, and ultimately a very innovative experiment by Gulraj! Well, I guess that’ll be another #5StarHotelSong!!

 

4. Auliya
Singer ~ Armaan Malik, Music by ~ Salim-Sulaiman, Lyrics by ~ Amitabh Bhattacharya

What do you do when you’re stuck in a problem, not knowing what to do next, not sure of what will happen next? Most people just sit there and keep worrying, while the others try to find a path to the solution, usually by praying to God. Well, Amitabh Bhattacharya has written this song exactly based on this situation which everyone has surely faced sometime or the other. Salim-Sulaiman, who don’t compose that much these days (the last  time their compositions were heard was in ‘Mardaani’) have composed a beautiful, soulful melody to Amitabh’s lyrics, and let me tell you, it is a very, very emotional and divine, yet modernly composed song. Armaan Malik, has sung good, but I think there would have been more soul in the song, if Salim himself had sung it. The arrangements, though minimal, are top-notch and go with the mood of the song. The guitars calm you, the piano soothes you, while Armaan’s makes you feel blessed. The song, unfortunately, lasts for a short duration of three and a half minutes only. This song wouldn’t be one of Salim-Sulaiman’s best, but it surely does leave a mark on you, which lasts for pretty long. The backing vocals, which I guess are Salim-Sulaiman themselves have a very beautiful effect on the song, and if they weren’t there, I doubt whether even half the effect would have been observed in those places. Another must-listen track on the soundtrack! Salim-Sulaiman do what they’re best at again! #5StarHotelSong!

 

5. Ungli Pe Nachalein
Singers ~ Dev Negi & Shipra Goyal, Music by ~ Aslam Keyi, Lyrics by ~ Kumaar

Another upbeat track, well, this time composed by the last composer left, Aslam Keyi. I had not thought much of his debut album, ‘War Chhod Na Yaar’, and had only liked one song, ‘Main Jaagun Aksar’ from that movie. However, since all the songs of this album were getting unfolded one after the other and each one was awesome, I considered a bit and expected something good from him too. However, he disappointed compared to the others. He has given a very average track, full of Punjabi dance track typicality, and also the irritating Mika-ish voice which Dev Negi has sung in. Shipra undergoes a transformation from her ‘Ishq Bulaava’ performance, and here she sings a dance track, that also very well. Her part, actually is the most appealing for me. So apparently, she is versatile, at least we got to know that much because of this song. The hookline is very heard-before and typical, nothing fresh and nothing to applaud, either. Towards the end the tempo increases, not giving any different effect whatsoever. The arrangements are done well, but it doesn’t matter here, as the main part, that is the composition and vocals itself are weak. The lyrics are like that of an item song, of course they aren’t good. After that cracker of a soundtrack, this one could rightly be called as last and also the least! Aslam disappoints!


Ungli is another multi composer album, just like ‘Yaariyan’, ‘Samrat & Co.’ and ‘The Shaukeens’, in which, inspite of there being a horde of different composers with different specialities altogether, all the composers have come together as one, and provided us with an enjoyable and memorable album. They are like four fingers (little finger, ring finger, index finger and thumb) of a fist, which contribute to make up the fist. Of course one of them has to be shorter and seem worthless (little finger) while one has to be most important (thumb), which would, in this case, be Aslam Keyi and Gulraj Singh respectively. The index and ring fingers, would be Salim-Sulaiman and Sachin-Jigar, both equally effective. As for the remaining one finger, if you insist on knowing about it, it has got to be the producer as he has had a very great impact on all of his albums and always pays attention to the music of his films, as shows here as well. Karan Johar has succeeded with the multi composer business finally, after that failure of an album with ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’! An album made worthwhile only because of the producer, who has chosen talented composers, who have tries their best to live up to the expectations!

Entertainment is an upcoming Bollywood comedy film starring Akshay Kumar and Tamannaah Bhatia and Junior in the lead roles, and Mithun Chakraborty, Johnny Lever, Krushna Abhishek, Sonu Sood and Prakash Raj in supporting roles. For those of you who are wondering who Junior is, he is the dog in the film playing the role of “Entertainment” (That’s his name in the film 😛 ). The film is the directorial debut of scriptwriters Sajid-Farhad who have written for films like ‘Golmaal Returns’, ‘Singham’, ‘Housefull 2’, ‘Bol Bachchan’, ‘Chennai Express’ to name a few. It has been produced by Ramesh Taurani under the banner of Tips Industries Ltd. Tips films are known for their good if not great music, but never disastrous, so of course, some nice music is expected from this film as well. Sachin-Jigar have composed the majority of the songs in the album, and Chirantan Bhatt has composed a bonus track. So let’s have a look at how good this latest album from Tips is!


First the review for the original soundtrack by Sachin-Jigar:

1. Veerey Di Wedding:- Singer ~ Mika Singh, Lyrics by ~ Mayur Puri

The first song in the album is a dance track sung by the one and only (because nobody else sings like him 😛 ) Mika paaji. Unlike other Mika songs released in recent times, this one I instantly loved, and mentally gave it a “SUPERHIT” tag. It starts with a very catchy techno tune, the specialty of Sachin-Jigar. As soon as the actual song with words starts, you can’t help but to listen to nothing else but the song. The composition is brilliant, and Sachin-Jigar have made it very interesting by adding small elements here and there to ensure that nobody loses interest while listening to the song. One such fascinating element is the chorus that supports Mika. The ‘o ho ho’s and bulwaado waado’s are genius additions by Sachin-Jigar. Mayur Puri’s lyrics are also very innovative and funny as well. His lyrics shape the song into the wedding song that it is, else the composition could have very well been that of a regular dance song or even club song, if the required arrangements were added. Lines like ‘Twitter pe hai trending’ and ‘Long time se pending’ are very intelligently placed in the song. He excels in the antaras, with lyrics that are even more funny. Mika is perfect for this song, and his energy is the prime reason that I liked it so much. I’m sure you will too! A song that is topping charts currently, and a perfectly written, arranged, composed and sung! #5StarHotelSong!

 

2. Tera Naam Doon:- Singers ~ Atif Aslam & Shalmali Kholgade, Lyrics by ~ Priya Panchal

A romantic tune beautifully blended together with a Sufiyaana touch, and with Tips’ favourite, Atif behind the mic, is sure to attract many listeners. What’s more, with the promising Shalmali Kholgade supporting him, and beautiful lyrics by Priya Panchal, what could possibly go wrong? But it unfortunately did go wrong. The romantic tune, is nothing fresh, and has very less innovative touches, except maybe the Sufiyaana touch, which might appeal for some time. Atif sings the song good, but Shalmali’s talent has been wasted. Instead, a singer with a softer and more melodious voice could’ve done the trick, perhaps Shreya Ghoshal or even Priya Panchal herself. Speaking of Priya Panchal, she has written mind-blowing lyrics! The characters are blaming each other for falling in each other’s love! Brilliant! The main hook would roughly translate to ‘if someone asks, I’ll tell them your name’ as in, you are the one to blame. 😀 Hats off to Priya for thinking of that concept! Though the tune is average and heard-before, the arrangements help to fix that up, and cover up the flaws (or missing stuff) in the tune. The flute loop especially is very sweet. Sahin-Jigar have come up with a very typical tune, but the magic lies in the lyrics!

 

3. Johnny Johnny:- Singers ~ Jigar, Priya Panchal & Madhav Krishna, Lyrics by ~ Mayur Puri

The next song is one that has already found many, many fans. Sachin-Jigar enter ‘Yo Yo Honey Singh Mode’ for this song, and no, I’m not saying that because it’s about alcohol, which Honey Singh HAS to mention in every song of his. I’m saying that because the composition style is exactly like Honey Singh’s style — repetition of the verses over and over. Who ever thought that Honey Singh would influence other composers?! 😛 However, the song isn’t as atrocious as Honey Singh’s songs, on the contrary, it’s pretty good! It starts with a very catchy techno tune, and as the song progresses, it just keeps on getting catchier and catchier! Especially the part sung by Priya Panchal, sounds really great! The way she says ‘no no no maine pee naii ae’ is totally worth hearing! Sachin-Jigar have again added some very interesting elements, like the small child’s voice, saying ‘haanji’ and ‘naaji’ and ‘hawwji’. The arrangements are fabulous, because the song again falls under the genre at which Sachin-Jigar are best and they have done terrific techno arrangements. The tune of this song is very different from what we get to hear these days, and has a slightly dark tone. Mayur Puri has written lyrics perfectly, and half the credit for the success of the song definitely would go to lyrics! I guess the intelligent idea of transforming nursery rhyme, ‘Johny Johny’ into a modern party song was his. Great idea! Whatever faults Sachin-Jigar had made in the previous song, are covered up by this song! You must have already heard it many times, someplace or the other, so all I will say is:- #5StarHotelSong!

 

4. Teri Mahima Aprampaar:- Singers ~ Anushka Manchanda & Udit Narayan, Lyrics by ~ Ashish Pandit

This song starts with a tune played on a banjo-like instrument, and some ridiculous rap by some uncredited people (most probably Sachin-Jigar themselves?). Anushka kicks in with some typical item-ish lines, and Udit Narayan’s entry just adds to the ridiculousness of the song. It sounds like some illiterate guy is trying to sing in English. This song also has a line from the nursery rhyme ‘Twinkle Twinkle’ — ‘How I wonder what you are’. But instead of that, the way Udit Narayan says it, it sounds like ‘Haau I vhunder vhaatt you aar’. 😂 The song will entertain for a limited period of time, and it will sound like a great dance song, but after that limited period is over, you wouldn’t think of playing it at all. Lyrics are nothing great, and neither are the arrangements, which Sachin-Jigar haven’t kept as interesting as the other sings in the album. The tune is the only attractive part, but that too to a certain extent. The unknown rapper people make re-entries throughout the song, with an annoying line that sounds like ‘oh bandi chhote!’. Well whatever it is, that line is so annoying! This song stands nowhere in front of the others, but make the most of its enjoyability till you get bored of it in subsequent listens.

 

5. Nahin Woh Saamne:- Singer ~ Atif Aslam, Lyrics by ~ Priya Panchal

This track is a sad version of ‘Tera Naam Doon’, and has nothing much to offer except a chance to finally hear what the lowest level of Atif’s besurapan is. In many places he has lost his tune and has sung like an amateur. Priya’s lyrics are good in this version too, and it might be the only reason to hear the song. Sachin-Jigar have kept the arrangements very low, with only guitar strums and chimes supporting Atif. It is only one minute and 48 seconds, so it won’t make much of a difference if you hear it or not. Hear it for Priya’s lyrics.

♪ Maange Entertainment:- Singer ~ Akshay Kumar, Music by ~ Chirantan Bhatt, Lyrics by ~ Manoj Yadav

After Aamir Khan, Alia Bhatt, Shraddha Kapoor and Salman Khan, now even Akshay Kumar has picked up the trend of these days, to sing in a film in which he stars. It’s not the first time — he had sung for ‘Special 26’ last year — but this time, it isn’t a romantic song, but an entertaining song. Chirantan Bhatt has composed this song as a title track for the movie. It is crazy, zany, whacky — call it whatever you want. Akshay Kumar sounds well in the song, but most probably his voice has been autotuned. Techno elements have been very efficiently used by Chirantan, and he has delivered a song very different from what is known as his comfort zone i.e, romantic songs. It is entertaining, with weird but entertaining lyrics, and the tune is also pretty good, though not a superhit tune. Pretty Entertaining so try it out!


Entertainment actually does have songs that provide wholesome entertainment, be it ‘Johnny Johnny’ or ‘Veerey Di Wedding’ or ‘Tera Naam Doon’, they entertain. Though a few songs have a typical tune, they manage to entertain for some time at least. Sachin-Jigar have totally made up for the disappointing songs they had given in ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’, and Chirantan also entertains with his sole bonus song. The album is true to its name and it will definitely entertain you for a month or so if not for a very long time. The musical flaws, stated at the concerned places, also cannot be ignored however, hence the rating. This album truly provides fulltoo entertainment, and though it has some flaws here and there, it will be able to do justice to the film and even might give the film a slightly higher opening than it would have had!
