Kaalakaandi is an upcoming Bollywood black comedy, directed by ‘Delhi Belly’s writer Akshat Verma, and starring an ensemble cast comprising Saif Ali Khan, Deepak Dobriyal, Kunaal Roy Kapur, Akshay Oberoi, Sobhita Dhuliphala, Isha Talvar, Amyra Dastur. The film’s music is expected to be in the same zany and wacky zone as that of ‘Delhi Belly’ was. This time though, Ram Sampath hasn’t been roped in. Sameer Uddin has been given charge of the songs of the album, and ‘Phillauri’ fame Shashwat Sachdev gets to compose the title song. Let’s dive right in!
Sameer Uddin composed the theme track ‘Badass Babua’, to Rajkummar Rao’s character in ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’. Now, he returns with Swagpur Ka Chaudhary, a song that is just as full of attitude and spunk as was the former one. The song is a bit less catchy than ‘Badass Babua’, but it is still very fun to listen to, thanks to Akshay Verma’s energetic singing, and the fun Haryanvi lyrics and accent. Neha Bhasin’s Kaala Doreya is a funky recreation of the popular Punjabi folk song, but it isn’t as catchy as it could have been. Neha sings wonderfully though, and she seems to be getting hit song after hit song these days. My favourite from the album is Jive With Me, a nice retro-ish track with amazing brass instruments and a quirky trumpet loop. Abhishek Nailwal’s singing is top-notch, and so is Sameer’s composition. Aa Bhi Jaais a bit of an unconventionally dark and sensuous, but still zany song, almost in the ‘Aao Na’ (Haider) zone. What’s more, it is sung (rather, whispered) amazingly by Vishal Dadlani too! The vocal loop here is great. Nice how Sameer’s songs have this one particular loop that make them even more enjoyable!
Shashwat Sachdev’s guest composition, Kaalakaandi is an amazing fusion of folk instruments and techno sounds; the man shows his versatility in this track like he did when he could compose a ‘Naughty Billo’ and a ‘Dum Dum’ in the same album, ‘Phillauri’. The Carnatic style sarangi and dhols are welcome experiments, and unconventional too, as is the crank in tempo towards the end.
An unexpectedly enjoyable experimental album, which might not stick with us due to its tunes, but will be remembered for its distinct crazy sounds.

Bhoomi is an upcoming Bollywood action thriller starring Sanjay Dutt, Aditi Rao Hydari and Sidhant Gupta in lead roles. The film has been directed by ‘Mary Kom’ and ‘Sarbjit’ fame Omung Kumar, and produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar and Sandeep Singh. The film is a revenge saga revolving around a father trying to avenge his daughter, who is a rape victim. Now, this filmmaker Omung Kumar, has been known for making loud and sobby dramatic films, but also, both of his previous films have had amazing music albums as well, featuring in the Music Mastani’s Top 20 Albums of the respective years they released in. While ‘Mary Kom’ featured music by newcomers Shashi-Shivamm, and ‘Sarbjit’ featured a nice mix of T-Series-affiliated artists (Amaal Mallik, Tanishk Bagchi, Jeet Gannguli), and newcomers Shail-Pritesh, this time Omung raises the bar by roping in highly busy composers Sachin-Jigar. Now this is probably the first time I remember seeing the duo compose for a drama like this, so it’ll be something new for them and for us. But expectations are still sky high because of Omung! So let’s see how far above the bhoomi (ground) Sachin-Jigar’s music flies!
Sachin-Jigar’s fifth album of the year starts off with a song I can’t believe they have made!! The song is a club song with a composition that I would expect from someone like Badshah or Yo Yo Honey Singh, and not Sachin-Jigar! The composition is very weird, and not in the good way. It is basically just a typical item song composition, and coming from Sachin-Jigar, that is quite shocking. The male portions especially, are very disappointing. Those are actually the parts that could’ve been the best. Also, the antara is quite similar to their own “Teri Mahima Aprampaar” (Entertainment). The hookline is just Badshah belching out the words in an expressionless tone. Here, it is evident the composers were trying to experiment, just to make the song sound a bit better, but sadly, they couldn’t make those experiments work. For example, the flute and dhols arrangement was clearly done to increase the quirkiness of the song, but it backfires, sadly. The beats too, aren’t addictive or anything — it is just a straightforward song to listen to and forget. The vocals by Neha Kakkar are very disappointing after that amazing rendition of hers in ‘Ghungta’ (Babumoshai Bandookbaaz)! Here she doesn’t even sound half as energetic as she did there! Benny Dayal and Brijesh Shandilya (and of course Badshah) are used very less, and their portions are just repeated over and over. Good, because those parts are very irritating. Also, the ‘Hicky hicky’ sung by Neha is kind of irritating too! The lyrics by Priya Saraiya are the usual fare we get to hear in such songs, and nothing really makes sense. A song that must be a mistake!!
2. Lag Ja Gale

Next up, the composers present a romantic song, very saccharine-sweet, and following a Sufi template to the tee. Again, it is shocking that Sachin-Jigar’s music gets so predictable, but let’s not complain just yet. The composition here is very beautiful, and doesn’t take time to like. The mukhda and antara are especially very beautiful. It is the hook line “tere mere pyaar nu“, that is very predictable and sounds out of place, in an otherwise beautiful song. I can’t remember which, but it sounds an awful lot like a very famous 90s song too. The presence of Rahat almost impeded me from liking the song a lot. His voice has been making songs heavy and inaccessible these days (Like it did for ‘Mere Rashke Qamar’ from ‘Baadshaho’), but thankfully, Sachin-Jigar have employed his voice prudently, and not overdone the high pitch or the aalaaps, and it comes out very beautiful. The “Rab Varga” loop gives the song a very unconventionally abrupt start, and it’s one of the best effects of the song. The arrangements by the duo are the trademark Sufi dholaks and tablas, but because of the composition, you bear with it. Also, a wonderful sarangi keeps you engaged throughout the song! The major part of the song also has acoustic guitars, making it a kind of fusion between Sufi and acoustic guitars. Priya Saraiya’s lyrics are very cute, and very simple-sweet. A rare song by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan that will be known for simplicity! I wish there was some innovation though, as it has turned out very predictable!
After two slightly disappointing songs, Sachin-Jigar get to make a wedding song for the film. Now, this song seems to be one of those disappointing songs which grow with time, because that’s what happened with me. I found it a bit weird at first, but in the successive listens, I started to like it bit by bit. Now this is purely subjective, but I still think Sachin-Jigar didn’t try to make this song (or any song from this film) complicated and layered, and that’s why this is happening. The songs are straightforward, something we hardly get from Sachin-Jigar, and that’s why we might be disappointed at first. Anyway, the composition is a peppy wedding number, complete with Punjabi phrases and effective Indian wedding arrangements. The hookline seems very cheesy at first, but becomes catchy later on. The beginning is quite entertaining, with those dialogues, and after that, Jonita’s weird programmed voice singing something gibberish, I believe. That is one of the best parts of the song. The female chorus too, is very entertaining, and the word “ponga pandit” specifically caught my interest. Lyricist Anvita Dutt has utilised it so nicely. As the hookline gets closer though, the song increases its heard-before-ness, and it becomes an ordinary wedding song by the time the hookline arrives, though it is catchy. The antara is no better. Vocals are entertaining, especially Jonita’s, and the female backing vocalists. Divya gets the same part to sing twice, and he sounds good too, but it is the composition of his parts that sounds too flat. Arrangements consist of digital beats accompanied by Indian wedding instruments like the shehnaai (wonderful interlude on that!), dhols etc. Anvita Dutt’s lyrics are very innovative at parts and very ordinary at parts. A confusing song! You don’t know whether you like it or not!
4. Kho Diya
Singer ~ Sachin Sanghvi, Lyrics by ~ Priya Saraiya
Now comes what I’ve been expecting from Sachin-Jigar ever since ‘Meri Pyaari Bindu’ released and I loved all the songs. After that, frankly, I didn’t love any Sachin-Jigar song as much as I loved the song ‘Maana Ke Hum Yaar Nahin’, in any of their albums that released. But now, in ‘Bhoomi’, they come up with a deserving opponent for ‘Maana Ke Hum…’ with this song, another ghazal, and in my opinion, even better than ‘Maana Ke Hum…’ itself. I’ll explain why. The composition is genuinely ghazal-like, as in an actual, authentic ghazal! Though that song was also a ghazal, it did have minor Bollywood-ish touches. But in this song, Sachin-Jigar do not bow down to peer pressure in order to make a Bollywood-friendly song. The song still does carry many nuances of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s style of composition though. I sincerely hope SLB catches this song and ropes Sachin-Jigar in for his next project! The antara is one of the most beautiful compositions I’ve heard in a while. The arrangements too, are amazing, with soothing tablas, divine manjeeras, beautiful Guitars, and scintillating strings that provide an atmosphere of love and divinity. The water drop sounds, so characteristic of SLB, sound beautiful. Sachin Sanghvi says this is his first solo song in Bollywood (He also sang a duet with Shreya Ghoshal in ‘Jayantabhai Ki Luv Story’ before this), and he does his solo debut in a smashing manner! His voice has that amazing metallic touch, which people might mistake for programming, but it is his raw voice! Priya Saraiya’s lyrics are yet again, one of the most brilliant she’s written this year. A lovely number that is surely going to stay with me for a long time!!
Singer ~ Sukhwinder Singh, Lyrics by ~ Priya Saraiya
The pathos enters now, as it always does. Of course, because this is an Omung Kumar film after all. There has to be an overtly dramatic sad song. And that happens to be this song. Now, the composition is really good, if I have to judge as per it’s genre. But as an individual song, this doesn’t take me anywhere. After the magic that the former song had me possessed with, this song falls flat! The duo try to lift it up with an intriguing and mysterious arrangement (this guitar riffs do the trick), but how much can a song be able to be saved by good arrangements if the composition isn’t appealing? Sukhwinder adds to the tedium, with his heavy voice, and it sounds very uncomfortable. Even though the composition is so poignant, it all sounds fake due to the overcooked nature of the music and vocals. The hookline itself too, is very tedious. It sounds like something that should have released around 2008. Sadly, this one isn’t memorable at all!
To wrap up the album, Sachin-Jigar present a devotional song. Now Ganeshotsav has ended, and Navratri is about to start, and with the film opening just one day after Navratri starts, it seems an apt decision to include a song entitled ‘Jai Mata Di’ in the album. Now, the song is primarily a very dramatic devotional song again, to make it fit with Omung Kumar standards of drama. However, it fares a bit better than that one, thanks to the divine touch. The composition is amazing, and Sachin-Jigar mould themselves into a very trademark Ajay-Atul mode to compose this one. Actually, if Ajay-Atul had composed for the ‘Sarkar’ series, and the chants would’ve been ‘Jai Mata Di’ instead of ‘Govinda’, then this would have been the perfect background score for the ‘Sarkar’ franchise. To add to the Ajay-Atul feel, Sachin-Jigar even rope in Ajay as the lead vocalist. As always, he aces the song. Sanjay Dutt starts the song with a mantra, bt his interventions throughout the actual song when he sings “Jai Maa Jai Maa’, sound better. The arrangements are good, and Especially the strings are amazing. Other sounds like the tabla, and the pathos-filled composition make it sound like yet another SLB song, a la ‘Gajanana’ (Bajirao Mastani), and ‘Dola Re Dola’ (Devdas). This song isn’t something to enjoy with your earphones, but something to experience in theatres!
Bhoomi is a great example of an album composed by talented composers, but which suffers due to their inexperience in the genre of drama. Sachin-Jigar have composed for drama films very less; they usually go for rom-coms or musicals, but in this one, their discomfort is visible while composing for such a film. They still do try to add their own elements into the album, like the quirkiness of ‘Will You Marry Me’, which diffuses into thin air later on in the song. The best song in definitely ‘Kho Diya’, which I’m sure you will agree with, and so might they themselves. Anyway, it is one of those rare occasions where Sachin-Jigar disappoint, and it will surely pass!

Lipstick Under My Burkha is an upcoming Bollywood film starring Konkona Sen Sharma, Ratna Pathak Shah, Aahana Kumra, Plabita Borthakur, Sushant Singh, Vikrant Massey, Shashank Arora and Vaibhav Tatwavaadi. The film has been directed by Alankrita Srivastava, and produced by Prakash Jha. I don’t think it is necessary to introduce the film to you; you’ve probably heard lot about it, thanks to our beloved Mr. Nihalani. Without further ado, I’ll veer towards the music. The simple and short three-song album is composed by Zebunnisa Bangash (Zeb), who we have all heard singing many times before in Bollywood. But this is (I believe) her composing debut in Bollywood. So let’s give it up for her, and see what she has to offer in this women-uplifting soundtrack!
1. Jigi Jigi
Singer ~ Malini Awasthi
A ladies sangeet kind of song starts off the album, but of course, it has apt folksy vibes, considering that Zeb Bangash has composed it. It is actually an adaptation of a folk song by Haji Saifuddin, which Zeb had performed at the Sandaraa music concert in New York in 2015, a concert that was fronted by Zeb along with Brooklyn’s clarinet virtuoso Michael Winograd, which was a musical collaboration exploring a vast repertoire of South Asian musical traditions blended with the sounds and sensibilities of Eastern Europe, the Balkans and New York, according to the YouTube video that Michael Winograd has posted of this song. The Balkan flavour still appears prominent in Zeb’s Bollywood recreation of the song, but all the musician credits have changed, that is, she’s reworked the arrangements. First of all, the composition is a raunchy and catchy one, kind of like the songs from earlier this year’s ‘Anaarkali of Aarah’. The ‘Jigi Jigi’ hook seems like gibberish, or it could be something in Afghani, who knows, but it is catchy nevertheless. The composition traverses the sinister line of notes, and in befitting in such a strong film, which Anvita Dutt makes clear through her lyrics. What impresses me even more are the arrangements. The wonderful folksy sound that the rabaab (Siddiq Sameer), dholaks (Sharafat) and harmonium (Ankur Mukherjee) collectively exude, makes the song sound even more raunchy. The tambourine (Sharafat) gives a very unconventional rhythm throughout the song. There is a brief brass band (Shyam Raj & Friends) interlude that sounds like the only Bollywoodish cliché in the song, besides the harmonium, but still sounds great. The simple dholak-led rhythm is wonderful though. Malini is her usual folksy and raunchy self, and delivers the song with zest and zeal. A nice and folksy start to the album!!
Singer ~ Neeti Mohan
The next song in the album happens to be the only song which hasn’t been adapted from any other song like both of the other songs on the album. It takes the form of a retro, disco funk kind of song, a genre which really has seemed to have taken off quite abruptly in the past month or so, what with “Munna Michael” trying, and ‘Beech Beech Mein’ (Jab Harry Met Sejal) succeeding. This one is sung solely by Neeti Mohan, and that makes it all the more interesting somehow. Zeb’s arrangement is really sprightly, and light and frothy, something that instantly lightens up the ambience and mood. The composition is a lilting one, but perfect for the electrifying music. There are crescendo notes all over the composition, and they make the song sound all the better, not making it he everyday retro funk song. Zeb makes the antara a bit more mysterious and suspense-holding, and sensuous. The drums and disco sounds have been done perfectly. You can’t really ask for a better done track. The backing vocalists help increase the intriguing feel of the song. The trumpets, guitars and occasional strings (what a surprise!) are amazing. The amazing arrangements are complemented very well by Neeti’s whispery voice, and she sets free of all inhibitions to render a no-holds-barred performance. Anvita Dutt’s lyrics seem situational, but they are functional nonetheless. A nice throwback to the REAL disco era, and not the Bappi Lahiri disco era!
3. Le Li Jaan
Singer ~ Zebunnisa Bangash
For the finishing act, Zeb reprises yet another of her previous performances, this time, ‘Laili Jaan’ which she had sung at Coke Studio. The song was itself an adaptation of an Afghani folk song, and this one has the same composition, decorated with Hindi lyrics. The way it starts, you are instantly thrown back to the 1940s-1950s, the Charlie Chaplin era. And that effect is produced by Michael Winograd’s amazing clarinet. But Zeb retains the Afghani flavour by employing a wonderful rabaab (Siddiq Sameer) and accordion (Patrick Ferrel), making it sound a lot like the Balkan style of music, something that is so underdone and awfully underrated in Bollywood! More wonderful guitars and ethnic strings (Ankur Mukherjee), coupled with the drums (Kami Paul), throw in a modern touch. The composition itself is a sugar-coated raunchy one, exuding the folk feel as no other song ever did. It kind of reminds me of a couple of Vishal Bhardwaj’s songs from ‘Saat Khoon Maaf’. The hookline literally takes away your life, as Zeb sings “Le li le li le li jaan”, which means “You took my life!” 😍 The antaras are beautifully composed, reminding one of the wonderful 50s, when even Bollywood was heavily influenced by this kind of music, and it reflected in O.P. Nayyar’s music very highly. The treatment given to the song too, is highly unconventional, but it really wins your heart by the time it is over! Another clarinet portion ends the song on a bright and lively note for us. Anvita’s lyrics are cute and simple! A song that should serve as an example of how Balkan music must be done in Bollywood!
Lipstick Under My Burkha is a short and sweet folk-oriented album that we hardly get to hear these days in Bollywood. Getting on board a composer from Pakistan herself was a great move, in order to get that folksy touch. The variety in the album is still so ranged, even though two out of three songs sprout from the same folk music. A disco funk song stands out among these folk songs as well, and all of them are unconventional in their approach. What’s most important, all the songs have been sung by women, and composed by a woman, which is so apt for the film. So the album is like a lipstick with different shades of women empowerment!

Phillauri is an upcoming Bollywood romantic / comedy / fantasy film starring Anushka Sharma, Suraj Sharma and Diljit Dosanjh in lead roles. The film is directed by Anshai Lal, and produced by Anushka Sharma, Karnesh Sharma and Fox Star Studios. The film is about a man named Kanan who is born under an ‘unlucky star’, and has been told he needs to marry a tree before marrying his love, so that his soul can be cleansed. To his horror/amazement/shock/whatever you might feel if you were in such a situation, he finds a spirit who used to live in the tree following him, unable to go back to her own realm. He needs to help her go back there, but before that she needs to feature in a film and all, so you better watch it, or else she will have come out of the tree for nothing. :p Enough movie promotion, let’s steer on to the music. A newcomer (I believe; and every other website I checked says the same — they also only believe, nobody knows??) Shashwat Sachdev has composed the majority of the album, and the baby-fairy-like sounding girl Jasleen Royal has composed two more. Now, if such a well-known person like Anushka Sharma decides to launch a comooser with her movie, it must mean he has something in him. Clean Slate Films (Anushka’s production company) has previously produced ‘NH10’ and boy, was its music album phenomenal, and also full of composers who has never quite made it big in the industry. This movie seems to have more of a mass appeal, and Jasleen has made it big in the industry already, so the debutant must be really good at his job! Let’s see!!
1. Dum Dum / Dum Dum (Punjabi Version) / Dum Dum (Reprise) [Diljit Dosanjh Version]
“Aankhein kitaabi, tu khole toh padh loon, Kaajal si likkhi chhaapi, kahaaniyaan teri mere saiyaan! Baatein bataashon si zubaan pe rakh doon, Halke se pighlengi, bole tu chakh loon main saiyaan!”

Shashwat starts off his Bollywood debut with one of the most soulful folksy numbers I’ve ever heard in recent times. ‘Dum Dum ‘ starts off like a purely soulful Punjabi / Sufi song, with amazing instrumentation giving the perfect introduction into the song. The composition is an aptly folksy one, with numerous twists and turns throughout the song. The hookline is catchy, but some might get a bit annoyed by the fact that it repeats too many times — in the true sense of a Sufi song, if you ask me. So that didn’t bother me too much. The mukhda follows a very lilting tune, and the high-pitched antara really helps to consolidate the listeners’ interest in the song. It is the conclusion of the song which is really impressive, and Shashwat slows the pace down there, only to increase it towards the end beautifully ending the song on a high tempo. The arrangements are fantabulous, as said before. The folk instruments have been put to great use — especially the tablas, dholaks, the plucked string instruments and the other folksy percussions. The first two versions have primarily the same arrangements, but it is Diljit who gsts to sing against the backdrop of an almost unplugged instrumentation in his version. That makes things lively and ‘different’ and innovative; it is a bliss to the ears to hear such a grounded composition backed by digital music. But towards the end of the Diljit version, there’s a wonderful sitar piece that is to die for!! That part is sheer brilliance on the part of the music programmer. The vocals in all three version are very impressive. Romy makes his Bollywood debut (Although I think I’ve read his name somewhere, he calls this his debut.) with this wonderful Punjabi song. His voice has been reminding everybody of Shahid Mallya’s voice, and I felt that too, with a tinge of Divya Kumar as well. He gets extremely loud at parts, but the soul of the song doesn’t diminish in any way. Vivek Hariharan effectively joins him in the latter part of the song which I earlier described as the ‘Conclusion’, and his voice texture is sooooo beautiful, it is hard to not love his portion. And of course, the “dum dum dum dum dum dum hai dua” part which everyone should love so much. The singers reprise their roles in the Punjabi version, except with different Punjabi lyrics penned by Shellee, as opposed to the Hindi ones by Anvita Dutt. It kind of reduced the appeal of the song, and I couldn’t make myself to love that version, with different lyrics, which i couldn’t understand nor sing along to. Save an extra ad-lib at the beginning by Romy, this one is a carbon copy of the first version as far as arrangements go. Diljit’s rendition of the same is a bit toned-down, and could’ve been better, but the arrangements by Shashwat make up for the little void that his voice couldn’t fill. Guitars in this version sound more of the modern acoustic guitars than folk instruments, and it gives a nice and modern touch to the song. (Which is clearly for promotional purposes). The disappointing part of this version is that it doesn’t have the “conclusion” which I loved! The lyrics of the Hindi version are amazing, and I’m sure the ones by Shellee in the Punjabi version are too, but I couldn’t understand them! Unusual, because I usually grasp most of the Punjabi in other Punjabi Bollywood songs! A soulfully folksy start to the album!
Rating: 4.5/5 for the Hindi Version, 3/5 for the Punjabi Version, 3.5/5 for the Reprise Version by Diljit Dosanjh

The second song of the album is Jasleen Royal’s first out of the two she has composed in the album. This one is an upbeat Punjabi wedding song, and going by Jasleen’s list of songs, she has only one such song to her credit, which is ‘Nachde Ne Saare’ (Baar Baar Dekho), which is one of my favourite Punjabi wedding songs of all time now. Now this song is also just as catchy and infectious. The energy just gets to you in no time. At first, the composition might seem very ordinary for a Punjabi wedding song, following the same template to the tee. But, as usually happens, later on I started loving the song just because of its immense simplicity. Jasleen’s composition is a sprightly one with nothing coming in the way of the listeners’ happiness. Especially the interludes she sings herself, are very cute and mood-uplifting. The other stanzas have been composed well too, and rendered boisterously by Mika, the go-to for such songs. Finally, he gets a song where he actually was required to sing it! The arrangements are as upbeat as can be, and Jasleen doesn’t necessarily recycle her ‘Nachde Ne Saare’ arrangements, but tries to make this sound different with more dhols. And the brass band makes an unignorable appearance in the song. It makes the song very breezy and happy-go-lucky. Of course, Jasleen also follows the traditional ‘play-the-hookline-on-brass-instruments’ method that Amaal Mallik recently followed in ‘Aashiq Surrender Hua’ (Badrinath Ki Dulhania). The vocals are amazing. As I mentioned, nobody but Mika could’ve sung this wih the same energy, and he sings like the old Mika, the Mika everybody enjoyed! So it is very enjoyable. Jasleen, in her fairy-like voice, sings her two stanzas very well, and though they are mere interludes, they get etched into your memory. They are very cute and sprightly. Aditya Sharma’s lyrics are fun and enjoyable, describing a Punjabi wedding beautifully! One of the more catchy Punjabi wedding songs of recent times!
3. Naughty Billo

This song is Shashwat’s ticket to getting more and more offers from more and more producers and directors later on. Why? Because of the sheer innovativeness with which he has handled this song. Okay, so let me start from the beginning. The song is an experimental Punjabi dance song, quite similar to so many of the Punjabi pop numbers of today. However, there’s a nice catch in here. And that is the fact that Shashwat has so cleverly infused funky groove into the Punjabi song. The composition could’ve been better, but everything else covers that up, because the song excels in all other departments. I’ve not heard such a perfect Punjabi pop -ish number in quite a while. The song starts with a traditional old-fashioned Punjabi portion and we as listeners think the entire will follow suit. However, just as we are sure that will happen, Shashwat takes us by surprise and introduces a catchy (and purely modern, mind you) hookline that just makes you listen on! It is kind of a reprise to the old ‘Jhooth Boliya’ song. The arrangements are so experimental, and offbeat, that you just end up loving them. The funky beats are enough to make you dance without any inhibitions. Shashwat adds nice dhol percussion, and awesome brass instruments add the necessary funky element, not to mention the quintessential tumbi. So many backing vocalists randomly add their portions into the song as the song progresses, and it sounds like a free-for-all jam. Whatever the result is though, it is really innovative. The vocals are great too, with Diljit handling the Punjabi parts well, and Nakash the hookline. Shilpi Paul does well in her short parts, but Anushka steals the thunder with her full-of-attitude rap towards the end of the song. And it’s not even the “I-will-do-anything-just-to-make-my-movie-work” kind of stint! She actually sounds awesome in this new rapper form of hers! Anvita Dutt’s lyrics are fun and enjoyable. A fun funky song!

The way this song starts, reminds me of the starting of ‘Deewani Mastani’ (Bajirao Mastani). Anyway, the song is no doubt the best song of the album. Shashwat comes with yet another earthy folksy melody with this song. The mukhda starts quite slowly, but you will definitely start loving the song after you hear the hookline, which has a catchy and attractive old-world charm to it. Pawni Pandey’s antara has been composed very soulfully, in heart-rending low notes. Later the male part once again takes the song on a wonderful folksy route. However, it is the ‘conclusion’ of the song, that steals the spotlight. The song breaks into a Qawwali-esque mode there. Right from the “ohh sahibaaaaa…” till the end of the song, the song goes on a never-ending high, until the song itself ends. The “tere bina” verse is marvellous! Arrangements in this track are fabulous. The plucked strings (David Sinchury, Sanjoy Das, Youngmin Kim, Shashwat Sachdev) at the beginning, that oh-so-majestically reminded me of ‘Deewani Mastani’, are so gripping; they just pull you into the song. Also, Shashwat introduces a jingling sound in the beat after that, and it sounds so rustic and folksy! Lovely like never before. The percussions that break out in the hookline are wondrous as well. dholaks (Manoj Kumar) very well put the Punjabi theme of the song into action. The orchestra (Czech National Symphony Orchestra) works wonderfully throughout the song to give it a regal tinge, and they’ve accomplished it, I’m glad to say! The vocals by Romy are ravishing. The part he sings after Pawni’s, he has sung that so beautifully! And the Qawwali part too! It just gave me goosebumps! Pawni comes across as decent; she doesn’t seem to be managing the low notes too well. However Romy covers it with his magnificence in handling both high and low notes. The lyrics by Anvita Dutt are amazing here as well. Soul-stirring!
5. Bajaake Tumba

The folk doesn’t seem to get over just yet. Shashwat has yet another song left, and he makes sure the Punjabi folk influence doesn’t leave his songs until the last one. This one is a fun and enjoyable, but clearly situational song, which we listeners won’t be able to make heads or tails of as of yet, but it is fun to hear at least! It is an upbeat traditional bhangra number with an amazingly catchy tune considering its situational nature. It starts off quite odd, but gets better and better as it goes on. The hookline comes as an unexpected one with odd notes, that don’t match the fun nature of the other notes. That’s where the song gets interesting and experimental. The best part I loved in the song was the “oh yaara mere phirrrr na pooochooo aage kya hogaa…” part which was so smoothly sung by the singer!! The ‘timb lakk lakk timb’ loop is fun as well. The arrangements are just as fun as the composition. Of course dhols, dhadd, nagadas and the tumba make an integral part of the arrangements. A wonderful flutes assortment plays through the interlude. And the harmonium is splendid, too! The tempo increase towards the end is amusing as well! The two singers, Romy and Shehnaz Akhtar, do an amazing job in bringing forth the celebratory nature of the song through their singing. Though I’m not so qualified as to know who sang what, what I heard sounds good, and so I’m assuming both sang well. :p The backing vocalists play an important part in this song too, and their inputs make the song fun to listen to. About the lyrics, it seems that it is a kind of a story-telling session like we commonly see in films, where the man tells his friends about his experiences in winning the girl’s heart… Maybe? I don’t know. Enjoyable, but to an extent that can be crossed only after watching the film.
6. Din Shagna Da

Jasleen re-enters the soundtrack with her second track, which is actually her pop single which she has released in 2013. The song has been incorporated as it was into the soundtrack. It is a bidaai song with its own merits. The composition lies quite close to most of her previous songs, but is also instantly likeable; you don’t get time to compare it with the others because it is so emotional and heart-moving. Also, she takes the help of wonderful instrumentation to uplift the sound of this song. Instead of her usual acoustic guitar arrangements, she also adds apt dholaks, a sarangi, and I was surprised to hear a nice piano introduction to the song, and that plucked string instrument in the interlude is amazing! The magic lies in the second stanza, where she has programmed everything with a nice sound effect to it (can’t describe, but hear from 2:30 to the end) The composition is so heart-rending, (and I’ll say that it is already a common song that plays at weddings!) that it is perfectly apt for the situation. The vocals are beautiful. Jasleen sounds sweet and nothing less. Neeraj Rajawat’s lyrics, or whatever I could make out of them, are beautiful. A great depiction of the “sad” side of a wedding!
Phillauri is an album full of the heart and soul of Punjab. No rapper comes to degrade Punjab’s honour, and create a dismal image of Punjab in our heads. On the other hand, two talented youngsters don the captain’s hat and compose some wonderful songs with the essence of the real Punjab. It is so true to the folk music of Punjab that it gets haunting at some point! Shashwat and Jasleen present, the heart haunt and soul of Punjab! 🙂

Bang Bang! is the latest venture of Siddharth Anand, starring Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif in the lead roles. This action thriller flick also stars Danny Denzongpa and Jaaved Jaffrey in supporting roles. The film is a Bollywood remake of the Hollywood film, ‘Knight and Day’, and naturally, there is a huge hype surrounding it. What’s more, with this film, Anand, whose previous four films were romantic comedies, is going to try his hand at action. That would be something worth watching! It came as no surprise when it was announced that Vishal-Shekhar would be composing for this film, since Siddharth Anand had roped them in for all his earlier movies, and they had composed popular and great songs for them. So, there was no harm in expecting a lot from this soundtrack! Vishal-Shekhar, who had opened their account this year with the great music for ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’, were expected to raise their bar even higher! So, how have they performed, you ask? Well, read on to find out! 😀
1. Tu Meri Singer ~ Vishal Dadlani, Lyrics by ~ Vishal Dadlani
When it comes to club songs, I believe that Vishal-Shekhar and Pritam are the most efficient for that genre, and considering the innumerable amount of hits they have given in this genre, expectations from Vishal-Shekhar are never low for a club track. That is why, when this song came across and I heard it for the first time, my reaction was, “THIS is a Vishal-Shekhar composition?!” I was expecting something that would exceed their own standard of club songs. What I got was not bad, definitely not bad at all, but it just lacked that freshness in terms of composition. Later on, it started working its magic on me, and I started loving it. The technical part is perfect, with great use of techno sounds which makes it a beautiful EDM track. The whole composition is backed by electronic sounds, and that makes it very catchy, thanks to those sounds which make the song sound so energetic. But the glitch lies in the composition. The antara has been composed fabulously, but the mukhda and hookline, have a kind of amateurish feel to them. The repetition of ‘tu tu tu tu meri ri ri’ gets unnerving at a point, but thank God Vishal-Shekhar have put those electronic sounds in the hookline, because they actually do change the perspective a LOT! The lyrics are ordinary and have nothing interesting or innovative or whatever to them, but I don’t think that matters for a dance track. Towards the end, in the hookline, there are less electronic sounds, but they are replaced by sounds that sound like claps, and that is worth hearing. The song ends on a pretty abrupt note, after the hookline is repeated twice. Vishal’s energetic voice contributes to some of the interesting elements of the song and it gives another reason to love the song. The composition might be faulty, but the arrangements and vocals make up for that big time to result in a catchy and likable EDM track! Do not miss it!

A beautiful accordion melody welcomes us to the next song, supported by guitar riffs which make way for Shilpa to once again stun us with her beautiful voice. And she does just that. Ash King sings for Vishal-Shekhar for the first time, and he comes back into the music scene with a bang! He just reminded me yet again that, before Arijit Singh came and copied his style of singing, he used to sing many hit romantic songs! His voice is so beautiful, and it has a kind of fresh feel to it, which attracts ears to his voice each time he sings! The melody he has got to sing is one that would be remembered for a long time. His smooth voice is the perfect choice for this song. Shekhar has a solo part which I will describe later because it is so marvellous! The slow rhythm of the song makes the song very, very addictive and such that you will instantly fall in love with the lovely melody. Vishal-Shekhar have included many surprise elements throughout the song. The first, as I had promised to talk about ‘later’, is Shekhar’s solo. As the calm melody is commencing, the composition suddenly takes an unexpected twist, and dhols and nagada joins in, increasing the catchiness of the song even more! Shekhar sings his line very energetically, and it sounds awesome! The second surprise element is the Spanish-sounding guitars before the second antara. It actually feels as though you are sitting at an orchestra show in Spain. Anvita Dutt’s lyrics are also beautiful and enrich the feel of the song even more. Vishal has done a splendid job on the backing vocals, and my favorite part of his is when he hums after the line ‘Tu ibadat hai, Tu hi hai mazhab’. His vocals at the end make that line sound so magical! The hookline has been composed brilliantly, with awesome dafli-like percussion. The line in which Ash sings ‘meri raahein aaye tujh tak’, has been decorated by another track of Ash, making it sound wonderful, again! Moving on to the reprise, which sounds like Shekhar recorded it some time when alone. The result is tremendously beautiful and soothing. The sole instrument here is the acoustic guitar, and Shekhar sounds awesome, with the support of the guitar. The new lyrics by Kumaar are good too, and keep up the standard of the original. The variations are worth looking out for, and the song ends with you wanting more! Immortal melody by Vishal-Shekhar and one of the most mature romantic songs of the year! Refreshing guitar strums open up the next track in the album. That was a surprise, as Harshdeep Kaur’s name was seen in the credits, and she usually sings soft, calm songs. But this upbeat romantic song has been sung by her so beautifully, that I wish she would sing these types of songs more often! The composition is an ordinary, yet heart-winning, cute one, and you cannot help but feeling good, happy and stress-free after hearing this song. Harshdeep has managed the energetic parts very well. Benny enters in the antara, and his part sounds very nice, and he has sung it well too. The high notes which Harshdeep touches in the hookline ‘Humko naa khabar kab kaise aaya woh, dil se khus phus kya farmaaya woh’ , she has managed very effortlessly. The tune of that line is just too cute to express in words! The beats in that portion are also well done by Vishal-Shekhar, with the dafli-like sound here as well. The backing vocals ‘Oh oh…oh oh…’ are beautiful, and very catchy as well! The hookline is given a disco/club touch, the last time it is sung, and I have to say, it does get you up and grooving! The lyrics by Anvita are also very cute and the situation can easily be guessed going by the lyrics. Overall, it makes for a very refreshing listen, and you must not miss this one, at any cost!#5StarHotelSong!
4. Bang Bang Singers ~ Benny Dayal & Neeti Mohan, Lyrics by ~ Vishal Dadlani
This song has been composed in the exact same way that old pop songs used to be composed in the west (America is the main target here 😀 ) by some great stars (Michael Jackson is the main target here 😛 ). The piano chords start the song with a bang, and Benny and Neeti’s dark and addictive voices carry it forward, with the right amount of attitude and expression required for such a song. The lyrics are okay, again by Vishal, but again they don’t matter. The beats of the song make it something very interesting to listen to, and catchy as well. The disco-esque beats make the song very groovy, and still it has that thriller aspect as well. The composition is also very attractive and resembles the retro style of the west very well. The hookline is the most addictive part of the song, and the way Vishal-Shekhar have composed the tune for the two words followed by the line ‘raat bhar, baat kar, Tu mere saath chal, Dil pe chala hai jaadu, jaane kyon!’ deserves lots of praise. That line is so addictive, and you’ll only get to know how much after you hear the song! The way Vishal-Shekhar have composed the song in a stylish and grand, typical Western action thriller way, deserves infinite applause, because it is not everyday we get to hear such well-composed retro songs in the Western style! Though the title of the song has no relation to what they say after that, you can’t help but ignore it and enjoy the song!! The little interruption in the middle with the dance beats, and the vocals of Vishal Dadlani, is worth hearing again and again! A very well-composed title song in the Western retro style! Bang Bang! is a short album, yet it contains all the aspects, which are required in the soundtrack album to an action thriller flick. Three out of four songs are brilliant, with the last one just short of being awesome though it isn’t bad either. Vishal-Shekhar have delivered a great soundtrack for Siddharth Anand yet again, this time for a different type of film, and so consequently the album is also of a slightly different type! There is nothing wrong in the album, when you look at it as a soundtrack to an action film. After opening up their account this year with the beautiful album to ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’ though it isn’t as wonderful as that, Vishal-Shekhar definitely do not disappoint with their second outing, and deliver as per needs of the movie. The soundtrack is Bang On! It, along with Hrithik and Katrina’s star value, will assure an opening with a BANG! for the film!

In all the excitement for the new albums which were releasing last month, I totally forgot about my Early 2014 category! So now I am coontinuing with it! 🙂 The seventh album in my Early 2014 category has got to be be ‘Queen’. No, I’m not just reviewing it because the movie became a huge hit, but because its music was also very commendable! So here is my review for the ‘Queen’ music album!

Queen is a Bollywood comedy drama film which released on March 7th 2014. It is a joint production between Phantom Films and Viacom18 Motion Pictures. The film has been directed by Vikas Bahl and produced by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane. It stars Kangana Ranaut, Lisa Haydon and Rajkummar Rao in the lead roles. When I got to know that Amit Trivedi is going to score music for this film, I was very excited, because that man makes great music, though many times it is a bit too typical. After ‘Kai Po Che!’ and ‘Lootera’ albums being widely acclaimed last year, he can!e back this year with ‘Queen’. Though all songs weren’t noticed that much, they were still worth hearing and this album deserves to be in this category of mine. So let’s read my review for the music of ‘Queen’!
1. London Thumakda:-Singers ~ Labh Janjua, Sonu Kakkar, Neha Kakkar, Music by ~ Amit Trivedi, Lyrics by ~ Anvita Dutt
This song is a Punjabi Wedding Song, with the typical Amit Trivedi trademark all over it. He has used banjo to create the Punjabi atmosphere which is usually the job of the tumbi. Along with the banjo, dhols have been used in the traditional Punjabi way. In the antara, however, Amit has used his quirky techno sounds (which I cannot describe in words, only that they sound like a duck, but they sound good!). And who better than the Punjabi king Labh Janjua to sing this song! He has sung it very, very fabulously. There is not one single moment in the song where you will get bored. The Kakkar sisters, Sonu and Neha, have given brilliant supporting vocals. Anvita Dutt’s lyrics are very good, funny in places. If it were any other composer, he would have put too much of noise in whatever song he would have made for this situation, but Amit, using relatively less instruments, has shown that many instruments and loudness is not necessarily compulsory for Punjabi songs! And as expected right from the time it released, this song has become a huge hit over the weeks and is one of the best Punjabi dance songs this year!
2. Badra Bahaar:-Singer ~ Amit Trivedi, Music by ~ Amit Trivedi, Lyrics by ~ Anvita Dutt
Starting with horns, and instantly grabbing your attention, you will immediately come to know something different will be featured in this track. The composer’s unique voice and exceptional singing helps this tune a lot. Not that it is bad! Not at all! It is a very nice tune, but it will not sound so good in the first listen itself. Rather, you will have to give it some time to grow on you. The use of electric guitars in this track along with a classical-based tune shows exceptional fusion. ‘Bandish’ type lyrics (the ones which are there in classical songs) have been written by Anvita Duty to create a melancholic atmosphere, but the music does not make it feel that melancholic, and changes it to make it sound upbeat. The sitar’s use has been done in a very smart way, in the interlude along with drums, creating a beautiful effect. A very good track, but give it lots of time to grow on you! After it grows on you, you will surely feel like it is a #5StarHotelSong!
3. O Gujariya:-Singers ~ Shefali Alvares, Nikhil D’Souza, Music by ~ Amit Trivedi, Lyrics by ~ Anvita Dutt
To be very honest, I didn’t like this song when it released and still don’t like it. However, when it became a hit, it became obvious to me that since everyone is liking it, there must be something good about it. So I will review it not from only my point of view but from a general point of view. The tune is a bit dull, which is why I didn’t like it. However, the musical arrangements and vocals have been done very skillfully, making the track at least a bit interesting. It is an upbeat song, supposedly a party song if you don’t watch the video, which isn’t shot in a party or anything like that. It is a feel good song and a forgrt-all-your-stresses kind of track. It starts with a horn-like instrument followed by techno sounds and Shefali’s typical ‘weird’ voice (which I personally don’t like 😛 ) but she has sung it well, no matter how weird her voice is, but it is unique. Nikhil also uses his typical voice which sounds a lot like the voice of the composer himself. Amit has mainly used techno elements in the track which make it way more interesting. The antara is also a typical Amit Trivedi antara, with a line sung by the lead singer, and the next line by the backing singers. This is a very interesting and prominent feature in many Amit Trivedi songs. I personally thought that the techno part at the end was a bit too stretched and could have been cut down a bit. A dull tune, fixed by the arrangements! Fun to listen to, though!
4. Taake Jhanke:-Singer ~ Arijit Singh, Music by ~ Amit Trivedi, Lyrics by ~ Anvita Dutt
So with this song, Arijit has ticked off Amit Trivedi on his list also! 😀 It starts in a typical Amit Trivedi style (yes, again!) and then come the brilliant backing vocals by someone who is uncredited (or maybe it is Arijit himself). Then an awesome mouth organ solo piece cones which will blow you away! Arijit is the right choice for this song. I cannot imagine anyone else singing this song other than him. The tune is very cute and is one that will be liked by all be it old or young. It is another happy-go-lucky song, which is at the peak of catchiness. The lyrics are also very nice and cute and the music suits the lyrics. The composition changes scale two or three songs, instantly making this simple song into a complex song. But Arijit changes scale with great ease, effortlessly. He seems at ease singing an Amit Trivedi composition. The music has also been arranged very well, with guitar as the prominent instrument along with the mouth organ, drums and Amit’s usual quirky sounds. The composer again comes behind the mic for this song, which is again another song just showing off his typicality. The tune is very nice, and I enjoyed it a lot because of the way it seems to motivate you and cheer you up. The main instruments are again guitars and drums. The backing vocalists play a very important part in the song, and they give that impact which wouldn’t have come without them. Lyrics by Anvita are about freedom, and the music by Amit has given a great feeling of freedom as well. Amit has sung the track very well too, in his unique voice. Again in the antara comes his typical antara-composing style, with him singing a line and the backing vocalists singing the next. It just sounds so magical! The banjo played at the starting and ending also sounds awesome. It is just another example of the fact that no matter how typical the sounds are, the song can still attract many listeners. The way iypt starts with mild piano, you will instantly come to know that a calm, soothing track is to follow. The string instrument used after that is just too good! It creates a very magical atmosphere around you, and you will slowly get immersed in the song. Nandini has sung the song very, very effortlessly. Amit Trivedi has used a garba effect similar to the way he did in ‘Shubhaarambh’ from ‘Kai Po Che!’. It starts less than halfway through the song. The hookline has a bit of a haunting feel, which will surely make goosebumps appear on your skin. Anvita Dutt’s lyrics are exceptional! The state of mind of a person left alone has been depicted perfectly through her lyrics! The sitar-like instrument at the end just increases the want for more of the song, it feels too short. A PERFECT song! A type of song which no one can ever criticise! #5StarHotelSong!!

Again starting with the Amit Trivedi copyrighted sound, this song is one of the weaker tracks of the album. I didn’t find the tune that strong, whereas the music has been given very efficiently. The sitar has been used in an outstanding manner! The track is a soft rock number, so naturally there are dripums and electric guitars present. However, the main highlight is Mohan Kanan’s singing. He has performed exceptionally. The lyrics are also good. It will remind you instantly of ‘Shikaayatein’ from ‘Lootera’, but that was many times stronger in terms of the tune. A weak tune which still deserves a listen though, for the vocals and arrangements.
8. Ranjha:-Singer ~ Rupesh Kumar Ram, Music by ~ Ruoesh Kumar Ram, Lyrics by ~ Raghu Nath
The only song which is not composed by Amit Trivedi, also deserves a very special mention. Though it is pretty short, the tune is very strong. When I say strong, it does not necessarily mean that it is complicated. In fact, it is exactly the opposite and is very sweet and simple. The composer sings it very good without the support of any instruments, making the tune stand out even more. The melancholic tune is instantly likeable. Lyrics are fully in Punjabi, and the composition has made it sound like a Punjabi folk song. Definitely deserves a listen as well!

When the original song is a chartbuster, the chances of the remake to be a superhit increase by millions. That is exactly the case with this song over here. The mukhda sung by Ashatai has been kept as it is, but of course remixed with many techno sounds added to it. And trust me, if you are thinking it might be sounding very bad after remixing a classic song, you are completely wrong! It sounds awesome! We have not yet even come to the best part of the song, which is undoubtedly the Antara which has been added, with the vocals of none other than Arijit Singh! He has used a completely different texture in his voice for this song, probably imitating R.D. Burman’s voice texture, and succeeds with full marks (at least in my opinion). I loved his part!! The song has been remixed very very efficiently by Amit Trivedi, and the various sounds which he has used are just indescribable, creating a full on party mood and ambience. Not a single moment of the whole song in which you will feel bored. Even the least noticeable things like the backing vocalists singing “Hungama, hungama, hungama” are ‘ekdum’ perfect! I guess you’ve already understood that it is a #5StarHotelSong!!
Overall:- Queen is such a soundtrack which inspite of its typicality, has been liked by almost everyone. It is extremely light on ears, and each song has a certain feel-good vibe associated with it, be it the calm ‘Harjaiyaan’ or the enjoyable ‘London Thumakda’ or even the loud (opposite to Amit’s usual music) ‘Hungama Ho Gaya’. The typicality of Amit which is obvious in most of the songs, is liked by many but many dislike it as well. Even though it is high time he started trying different sounds, I feel he has already shown his versatility by composing songs of many genres, although sticking to his own template. He has tried all genres, but always sticking to his sound. This shows that he is confident of his sound, and the soundtrack of ‘Queen’ itself is an example that his typicality isn’t that big a problem, as he always leaves people awestruck when they hear his new songs. This album, though typical Amit Trivedi style, has been loved by one and all, because of the simplicity in the tunes, the light on ears quotient being more, and the brilliant arrangements.
