Pizza (in 3D) is a Bollywood supernatural thriller (horror) film which released on 18th July, 2014. It has been directed by Akshay Akkineni and produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur and Bejoy Nambiar. The film stars Akshay Oberoi, Parvathy Omanakuttan and Dipannita Sharma in lead roles. I was not expecting any decent soundtrack to this film after Bejoy’s previous film’s music being very bad (‘Kuku Mathur Ki Jhand Ho Gayi’), and even after the songs released, I ignored them and decided not to review them because the lyricists weren’t credited, but after hearing the songs, I realized they deserve a review and so what if the lyricists weren’t credited? At least the composers are, and so I decided to review it at the last moment before I post the Music Mastani Awards of July. So, the music of this film is composed by Mikey McCleary, Saurabh Kalsi, Gaurav Godkhindi-Ramon Ibrahim and Shamir Tandon. Three of them I’ve never heard of, but they have given me all the surprises! Read on to find out more!

Note:- I only know who the lyricists of two of the songs are, so please forgive me for not providing all the details, because nowhere has Times Music or UTV specified the details! :/

1. Gimme Pizza!:- Singer ~ Ankur Tiwari, Music by ~ Mikey McCleary, Lyrics by ~ Ankur Tiwari & Tanmay Bahulekar

This song is a mishmash of interesting sounds, with a mainly rock background. The tune is very weak, but the arrangements do the trick here, making for a pretty interesting listen. The rock elements are supported brilliantly by classical instruments like tablas and sitar. The lyrics don’t have any role in this song, which depends solely on the arrangements. I don’t know what was so great about this song that they needed two people to write it! They do get pretty loud at places, but overall, hey are very commendable. Mikey has used a very impressive amount of instruments, to cover up the bad tune. Ankur has sung it pretty well, but I think his voice has been altered, because the last time I heard it, it was pretty ‘besura’ in ‘Tu Tu Tu’ in ‘Kuku Mathur Ki Jhand Ho Gayi’. Either that, or maybe he is better at singing such rock songs. This is the very stuff I always expect from Mikey. I don’t know why I keep expecting more and more from him even when he fails in a certain movie. However, this time he really did live up to my expectations. Very impressive fusion! Thumbs-up to Mikey for that!

2. Tum Chal Diye:- Singer ~ Arjun Kanungo (Acoustic Version), Arjun Kanungo (Reprise), Music by ~ Saurabh Kalsi, Lyrics by ~ Shashank Kunwar & Abhishek Kumar

A beautiful romantic song, with a retro feel, this one you will find yourself instantly liking because of the simple yet lovable tune, and the awesome vocals by Arjun Kanungo, who had sung last year in ‘Khoon Choose Le’ from ‘Go Goa Gone’. It isn’t his first song, but of course it will add to his little fame, and might make him the next favourite of all composers. The arrangements are very simple, with mostly only acoustic guitars in the background (because it’s the ACOUSTIC version 😛 ). The lyrics are also good and go well with the theme of the song. Arjun has a kind of texture in his voice that is worth hearing. While the first version is a romantic song, the reprise version is a haunting, sad melody. The lyrics also change, and arrangements have taken a way more intense tone. The violins and orchestra has been managed awesomely, while the rock guitars and drums also join in. Arjun aces this one too, and the composer, Saurabh Kalsi also does just as brilliant work in this version too. This is his first film as a composer. He has composed songs for TV serials earlier. Well, it is great to have yet another immensely talented musician in Bollywood! Both versions are a must-listen, and you cannot afford to miss them! Great Bollywood debut by Saurabh! #5StarHotelSong!

3. Theher Ja:- Singer ~ Aparna Dauria, Music by ~ Gaurav Godkhindi & Ramon Ibrahim, Lyrics by ~ ? (Abhijeet Deshpande??)

If ‘Tum Chal Diye (Acoustic)’ sounded like a retro themed song, then wait till you hear this one! This one has got a totally retro 50s feel to it and it is sure to remind you of those old black-and-white Hindi songs where the actress just used to walk around in front of the actors with a rose in their hands with no apparent aim whatsoever, except maybe to show off how nice their flower smells. 😝 But seriously, the song is composed so perfectly that you will actually be transported to that era. Aparna Dauria sounds a lot like Shalmali Kholgade here, but she does an excellent job as well. The singer carries it out flawlessly, and the choice of instruments by the composers is perfect too! The brass instruments and drums just give it all the more of a retro feel. Gaurav Godkhindi has popped up in many albums, the latest one being ‘David’ for the remix of the remake of ‘Mast Kalandar’. The other guy I’ve never heard of. However, the duo has composed this track so very efficiently that I can’t find any other option but to praise, praise and praise them! Whoever has written the lyrics has also done a great job! Another must-listen song! And another #5StarHotelSong!

4. Haddiwali Mundi:- Singer ~ Ahan Shah, Music by ~ Shamir Tandon, Lyrics by ~ ? (Sameer Pandey??)

With the album getting better and better with each song, one would expect this song to be a great one…butt the truth is that it turns out to be the worst song of the album, and probably of the month as well. It is a heavy metal/rock song, with no fixed tune it seems, and lyrics that are just ‘anything’! The vocals are fine, but the song still doesn’t work because of the bad tune. The arrangements are way too loud. Whoever wrote the lyrics here should be banned from the industry. 😝 Good that the song is just two and a half minutes long, because it is simply ‘unjhelable’ and who knows what would happen if it was longer! It’s called weird, random, stupid, whatever you wanna call it! Or how about a better idea…just SKIP it!!

Pizza 3D is a surprisingly good album, with just one track being thoroughly disappointing. Otherwise, the album is pretty decent, with two outstanding romantic tracks and one awesome haunting sad melody. The title song is also very innovative. The composers have done justice to the theme of the movie by giving a surprisingly decent album. Who would have thought that these very-little-known people would churn out some beautiful melodies? I’m surprised and thoroughly impressed. As for the more-known composers, Mikey has delivered as per expectation, but Shamir has disappointed highly! An album with three gems, the other two songs being forgettable. This pizza is tasty to a certain extent!
