It is time for my Round-Up for December 2017, which is slightly delayed due to me being so busy, but better late than never, right?

So Fukrey has returned. Sadly, the man behind “Fukrey”s enjoyable music, Ram Sampath has not returned, and after his underwhelming stint in ‘Raees’, he doesn’t get a chance to bounce back with a franchise that was initially his. Anywho, let’s judge on what we have been given.
Prem-Hardeep, the original composers of ‘Kala Chashma’ before Badshah remade it in ‘Baar Baar Dekho’, get a chance now, to ruin somebody else’s song. Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s ‘O Meri Mehbooba’ (Dharam Veer) gets ‘remade’ into Mehbooba, a banal club song which starts and ends with the Fukras being rejected by a random girl in the club, who happens to be singing in Neha Kakkar’s voice. Yasser Desai gets one line that repeats over and over again, and it is frankly the best line of the song. Raftaar’s rap is too stereotypical. Jasleen Kaur Royal’s Peh Gaya Khalara, though fitting into her now-overused Punjabi dance number template, is quite enjoyable, with the sweet vocals by herself and Divya Kumar, Akasa Singh & Akanksha Bhandari accompanying them. The arrangements are what make the track more enjoyable, and also the quirky lyrics.
Familiar territory is entered in Ishq Bector & Shree D’s semiclassical Raina, which, though quite soothing, gets tedious due to its length (it is the only song on the album over three minutes long, and goes up to over four minutes long!) The arrangements help propel it forward though, and also Shree’s vocals. Shaarib-Toshi enter the Bollywood scene after a long time with a delightful Punjabi melody, Ishq De Fanniyar. The male version by Shaarib is great, but the Female Version has all the feels, hence scores higher. The beautiful melody seems like a wonderful sequel to the first movie’s ‘Ambarsariya’. The lyrics are sweet as well, not to mention amazing accordions in the arrangements.
The techno sounds come along with the last three songs, bunched up together, out of which two are by Sumeet Bellary (composed for ‘Fuddu’ last year), and one is by (another person who re-enters Bollywood as a composer after a loooooong time, longer than Shaarib-Toshi), Gulraj Singh.
Sumeet’s two songs rely on weird techno gimmicks, which fail to propel the songs forward. Tu Mera Bhai Nahi Hai is a quirky friendship anthem, but is pulled down by lack of catchiness in both music and composition. Bura Na Maano Bholi Hai is like a title song, but gets all over the place in no time. The arrangements are slightly better here. Both songs are sung by Gandharv Sachdev, wit Shahid Mallya joining him in the latter song, and aren’t all that well sung.
Gulraj does well in his title song, Fukrey Returns, with a nice catchy musical loop, and heavy use of brass and techno sounds which makes his song sound even better. Siddharth Mahadevan on the vocals is a bonus.


Not as great as the first movie’s album, but still a commendable album considering the amount of new talent on there. But nevertheless, I wish Ram Sampath had returned!

The song with almost the least amount of Punjabi words (second only to ‘Gulbadan’, which comes later on in the album) in its lyrics, Oye Firangi, starts the album off, and Jatinder Shah steals your heart right away. The charming melody immediately gets you grooving — thanks to a little EDM twist in the hookline — and though it is very simple, it is amazing thanks to the programming, and Sunidhi’s marvellous voice. There comes a British-era ballroom style orchestral portion at the end, but I wish the composer had extended that into another antara instead of ending the song with it! Another charming but heard-before melody, Sahiba Russ Gayiya, starts from where ‘Channa Mereya’ ended, with a similar structure and arrangement. Rahat’s voice is a boon to the song, and it’s the first song of his in a long time that doesn’t get on my nerves.(Ahem, ‘Mere Rashke Qamar’!) I love the way he pronounces the hookline. The Unplugged Version sung by Shafqat Amanat Ali, is funnily named ‘Sahiba (Male)’, as if Rahat’s version wasn’t by a male singer. The song itself is an improvement on the original, in that we get to hear Shafqat’s impeccable aalaaps, and though the choice of Shafqat doesn’t make it sound less like a Pritam song in general [Shafqat is just as much of a Pritam camp singer as Rahat is!] it surely does sound less like ‘Channa Mereya’, because the electric guitars have been toned down. Acoustic guitars play the larger role here. However some factors make both versions balance out at the end.
If ‘Sahiba’ had ‘Channa Mereya’ written all over it, Tu Jit Jawna has ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’s title song all, and I mean ALL over it! Daler Mehndi, who I wish had sung the BMB number too, sings this one, and so it is quite bearable, but otherwise, it falls flat and sounds hollow in its emotion. It is also lyrically a counterpart to ‘Oye Firangi’, except Daler paaji doesn’t call him a ‘Firangi’ (foreigner), while Sunidhi did.
Gulbadan is a Qawwali-esque number, sung by Mamta Sharma. Good to hear her sing a different kind of song, though I’m sure the video will be the same kind of Bollywood ‘item number’. The hookline is greatly composed, with amazing arrangements by Shah, but again, falling into the too much tried-and-tested category of arrangements. I guess the best that comes out of this song is hearing Mamta Sharma’s gentle voice, because she thankfully hasn’t been made to sing in the annoying loud voice of hers.
But the album’s best is the wonderful folksy number, Sajna Sohne Jiha, which transports you back to the Punjab of the olden days. Wadali Bros’ Qawwali ‘Ve Sone Diya Kangna’ has been given a nice reinterpretation by Shah, and it works so well. The rhythms at the beginning really bring out the song’s folksiness, and Jyoti Nooran’s strong voice helps propel it to the finish line, where it emerges the winner compared to the other songs of the album!


A very desi album to the film ‘Firangi!’

After a long time (or is it the first time?), one single composer gets a chance to compose an album for a film starring Sunny Leone. Somehow, she debuted smack in the middle of the multicomposer craze and so, got mainly multiple composers to compose for all her films! Raaj Aashoo handles the album.
The title track, titled Intezaar Title, instead of a more apt ‘Tera Intezaar’ (Obviously, because that’s the film’s name), is a dreary 2000s melody, sung by Shreya Ghoshal too, as if she is still in her debut year. Adding to the ennui, is the Qawwali-ish chorus. Raaj’s composition is good, but dated. The arrangement is the best thing about the song, especially the flute. Another very typically 90s melody, Khali Khali Dil, sees Payal Dev and Armaan Malik at their clichéd best. The digital sounds do not help make it more ‘modern’ or anything, and even the harmonica fails to create any impact. Quite a similar sound follows in the dreary Mehfooz, another song straight out of Nadeem-Shravan’s music-bank. The guitar work makes it sound like a version of Mithoon’s ‘Sanam Re’ title track, sans the tablas. Yasser gets a version, and, sounding like Arijit as always, manages to make it sound genuinely interesting. The arrangements here too make this song much more interesting than ‘Khali Khali Dil’. The song appears in two more versions, one by Palak Muchhal and the other by a new singer named Hrishikesh Chury. Palak’s 2½ minute long version fares better than Hrishikesh’s normal length one, because of the pleasant arrangements. Also, Hrishikesh tries to sound like Kumar Sanu.
The best song on the album, Abhagi Piya Ki, becomes the best only because the others don’t deserve it. It appears in two versions, a banal one sung jarringly by Kanika Kapoor and Raja Hasan, and a slightly better version sung much better by Payal Dev and Javed Ali. The tablas that went missing from ‘Mehfooz’ seem to have come to this song, and they play in surplus. The semiclassical touch to the song is good, but the 90s melancholia seems to have followed the composer like a thundercloud whenever he sat to compose for this film.
The only song that does not sound anything like a 90s song is Sexy Baby Girl, and it doesn’t work because it tries to sound uber-cool with its lead singer Swati Sharrma, like always, trying to add unnecessary style to her words, resulting in a disaster. Also, the lyrics are cringeworthy.


This is not an album anyone would have waited for.

Rochak gets two songs, and reminds us why he’s one composer that keeps popping up in numerous albums scattered over the year’s span. It is because of his strong melodies. Pal is a cherishable melody which, though predictable, does give you goosebumps, and makes you want it to rain. Arijit’s heart-touching rendition is enough to make anyone fall for the song. On the other hand Miliyo Re is a very Sachin-Jigar-ish romantic song, with Monali and Rochak behind the mic, with vocals that aren’t amazing, but are functional. The composition is good but very commonplace; not as distinct as Rochak’s other songs this year.
Viveick-Mayur present their only song Andheri Raat next, a haunting song with weird Marathi rap, and awesome Punjabi-flavoured male vocals. Neha Bhasin kills it behind the mic, as does her co-singer, Rajiv Sundaresan, doing the aforementioned Punjabi-flavoured portions. The Marathi rap by Aklesh Sutar is funny, and quite weird too.
The other three songs are quite situational, all by newcomers, with neither one exactly standing above the others. Chinmay Harshe’s Miss You Balma, by Akriti Kakar, is experimental but has you questioning “Why??” because the jazzy composition and the rock arrangements don’t really gel well with each other. Akriti aces the vocals though, singing in an unusually (for her) low pitch. The other duo, Chetan Rao & Vikram Shastry, present two songs, one being a folksy item song Maachis Ki Teeli, in which the very unconventional choice of singer, Bhavya Pandit, whi hasn’t ever sung such a song, proves to be great, as she adjusts to the song’s folksiness very well. Her co-vocalists provide good company as the loafers interjecting occasionally. The last song Faislay has a quite dated tune, and a very mismatching digital loop that starts it off, but Mandar Deshpande’s singing brings it up.


An album that is good, but still will be a wipeout.

Dharam Sankat Mein is an upcoming Bollywood comedy / religious satirical film starring Paresh Rawal in the lead role, and Naseeruddin Shah, Annu Kapoor in supporting roles. It has veen directed by debutant Fuwad Khan, and produced by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, Sajjad Chunawala and Shariq Patel. The film is about a Hindu man played by Paresh Rawal, who discovers that he was only adopted into a Hindu family, but was actually born into a Muslim family. This makes him go search for his father. The plot of the movie really does seem interesting, like all other movies of this genre, and is sure to get a great opening just because of the star value of Paresh Rawal. The music of this film, though I am not expecting much from it, yet seems like it would be something interesting. It is a multi-composer album, with two songs by Sachin Gupta (“Prince”, “Mere Dad Ki Maruti” fame) and one each by Jatinder Shah (“Janib” from “Dilliwaali Zaalim Girlfriend” fame), Meet Bros. Anjjan (do I really need to specify their ticket to fame?) and Shamir Tandon respectively. So, let’s see how far the album helps this religious satire!


1. Neelanand
Singer ~ Ravi Chowdhury, Music by ~ Sachin Gupta

Sachin Gupta is one of those composers, who pops up once in a year or so, and fails to create much impact with that little work he does. This time, he has come back after composing two songs in ‘Badlapur Boys’, which I didn’t review because it wasn’t that great. Before that, he had composed the entire album of ‘Mere Dad Ki Maruti’, so you can see the gaps in his popping-up. 😂 Anyways, now he’s back with two songs in this satirical film. This song is a song which seems like an anthem for the Babaji who is portrayed by Naseeruddin Shah in the film, Neelanand Baba. It’s quite a situational track, which goes on praising the Baba. Lyrics are of course, humorous just as they should be in such a song. The tune is pretty catchy as well. The song actually sounds like the bhakts of the Baba (saint) are sitting and chanting these lines for him. The “Neelanand Neelanand Neelanand BABA” chants are weirdly addictive, and you will find yourself crooning them, when you least expect them to pop in your mind. Ravi’s folksy vocals suit the composition and also this situation. He’s actually a Bhojpuri singer, debuting in Bollywood with this song. In the arrangements too, the song doesn’t lag behind, with interesting use of rock guitars in this type of song. Manjeeras adorn most of the composition, and give the religious feel, which is balanced out by these rock guitars, which is an interesting combo. I guess I could hear the dumroo in places too, and it sounded so great! The mukhda might be pretty catchy, but that interest is lost in the antaras, where only the “Neelanand BABA” chants are there to entertain you. A good attempt at making a catchy tribute to a dhongi baba!! Catchy hook helps the song, but just misses the coveted tag! 😜

 

2. Do You Know Baby
Singer ~ Gippy Grewal, Music by ~ Jatinder Shah

After giving us a wonderful, beautiful melody ‘Janib’ in ‘Dilliwaali Zaalim Girlfriend’, I guess Jatinder Shah signed this film, just to show his true colors. I did praise him and all for giving something traditionally, and beautifully Punjab-flavoured, but here he is, giving another song which sounds just like aall these Punjabi composers in Bollywood are trying to do. An utterly ridiculous sounding song, sung by the Punjabi singer/actor Gippy Grewal. Gippy’s voice is pretty irritating, and singing in Punjabi-Hindi-English lyrics mixed just sounds weird in his voice. Arrangements by Jatinder are pretty catchy, though, with the techno sounds and dhols pepping up the song. Lyrics are ridiculous, and nothing more was expected from Kumaar with such a song. The guy says “Hum pangdhe (Bhangre) ke sardaar, do you know baby?” That just sounds so stupid in itself! The hookline, is catchy, like it should be, but unfortunately, the other parts of the song just loosely revolve around this hook, thereby not making the listener that interested till the hookline comes, and then after it’s done, the condition becomes the same as it was before the hook had come. 😂 So it would have been better if they had just made the song with only one tune — that of the hook. Thank God, they kept the song short at only two and a half minutes. Jatinder disappoints, this time, because he shows variety…. An unwanted variety, for that matter!

 

3. Tu Takke
Singers ~ Gippy Grewal, Khushboo Grewal & Meet Bros. Anjjan, Music by ~ Meet Bros. Anjjan

A very familiar-sounding Tumbi sound brings us to the next song, where Meet Bros. Anjjan, probably the most well-known composers composing for his film, enter the soundtrack. And you know why it sounds so familiar? Because it bears a very striking resemblance to the opening Tumbi from Amit Trivedi’s ‘London Thumakda’ (Queen). Now I were them, I would really watch out before such a coincidence happened, because the whole nation knows that song, and then I would be exposed to all kinds of accusations of plagiarism. Even though it was simply a coincidence. So, that really gives a bad impression to the listeners right from the beginning. Anyways, since it quickly changes and gets off that ‘London Thumakda’ sound, the makers are saved. After that, though, what follows isn’t that great either. Gippy gets another song with different composers (pretty rare) in the same album, and I guess Meet Bros. Anjjan had to compose keeping his style in mind i.e, typical Punjabi wedding/rap/irritating songs. This is a major letdown from people like me, who were expecting something innovative. Meet Bros. Anjjan always deliver great when it’s not expected of them, but fail to do so when it is expected. How irritating is that! Meet Bros Anjjan’s rap is nothing worth hearing. Khushboo’s part is a relief, and she does well, actually providing something to hear in the song. The composition, again, is dependent on the hookline to make it work. Everything else, loose and dull and stale and heard-before. (Not that the hookline is something brilliant either, but we can cut them some slack there) Arrangements are good once again, tumbi and dhols leading it. Techno sounds are also used occasionally throughout the song. Kumaar’s lyrics are yet again, nothing fresh, the same Punjabi wedding stuff and irritating blend of Punjabi, Hindi and English. Nothing to appreciate as true or entertaining lyrics. Meet Bros. Anjjan stick to the everyday Punjabi wedding song template, thereby failing to give anything applaudable. Makes for a good dance to play at weddings though! 😝

 

4. Allah Hoo / Allah Hoo Allah
Singers ~ Ravi Chowdhury & Sachin Gupta / Pardeep Sran, Music by ~ Sachin Gupta

After three upbeat songs, out of which none were exceptional, but one did manage to at least interest me, finally I got something I would love to hear. Sachin Gupta re-enters with this Sufi track, with two versions, one sung by Ravi Chowdhury & the other by Pardeep Sran. The composition is a very soothing and calming song, sure to make the listener get emotional. It does remind you a lot of A.R. Rahman’s ‘Khwaja Mere Khwaja’ from ‘Jodhaa Akbar’. It has the same aura of divinity around it, as that song had. Ravi’s rendition suits the theme and pace of the song. Every single nuance has been done with ease and finesse by him. His voice has the required rustic-ness in it, with which he could carry out this rendition with no problem whatsoever. Arrangements are as soothing as soothing can be, with all the dholaks, harmoniums played in such a divine way, that you might even imagine yourself in a Gurudwara of you close your eyes. Sachin has provided beautiful orchestration in the hookline, which in itself has a master tune. Pardeep Sran, another debutant to Bollywood, in his version, manages to pull off the composition with as much ease and as expertly as Ravi. Though they have named his version ‘Allah Hoo Allah’, there is nothing different in this version and the former. His voice reminds you more of the folksiness of Punjab, slightly resembling Kailash Kher’s voice. The hookline in Pradeep’s version sounds way more traditional, because of the pronunciation, and it brings in an element of folk Punjab into the song. Kumaar has written meaningful lyrics, seeming to describe the feelings of a person, who has lost hopes from his life, and really doesn’t understand what his importance on the world is. Finally, true music lovers get what they would love, and Sachin Gupta aces with the composition! Brilliant work to create a Sufi traditional song! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

5. Shiv Tandav
Singer ~ Aman Trikha, Music by ~ Shamir Tandon, Lyrics ~ Traditional

This is an out-and-out religious stotra, not at all spoilt by any techno sounds, and kept playing on the divine background of the tanpura drone. Aman has chanted the “Shiv Tandav” we all might be familiar with, with great and intense energy, at the same time making sure that energy is radiated out to the listeners as well. There is nothing much to describe here, except that you must not skip it just because you have heard it, or you think that you may get bored by it, because of you think so, you are very sadly mistaken. Shamir has designed the whole thing perfectly, and succeeds in his intention to make something impactful. Awesome!!!!! Divine!!!!! #5StarHotelSong!!


 

Dharam Sankat Mein is an album, in which songs seem to have been forced, just for promotion of the movie. The smart makers of this film have merely catered to the likes of the public, and so, whatever be the subject of the film, Punjabi music is a must. A wedding song, and a bhangra (failed one, if I may say so) have been added for the sake of the public, it seems. Entertaining, yes. Appreciated, no. Wanted, absolutely not. At the end of the day, it is Sachin Gupta (whom I was expecting the least from) and Shamir Tandon who give the best tracks on the album, partly because their songs are relevant to the movie, and partly because they have repeat value as well. Three good songs, put of which two are exceptional, not a very good thing for the overall album, so, may I say, sangeet sankat mein??

Dilliwaali Zaalim Girlfriend is an upcoming Bollywood romantic comedy film, starring Divyendu Sharma, Prachi Mishra & Ira Dubey. The film also stars Jackie Shroff in a negative role. The film has been directed by a female director, Japinder Kaur, and it’s her first feature film, making it a very ambitious project for her. It has been produced by Tarnpreet Singh & Manjeet Kaur under the banner of ‘JAP Films’. Moving on to the music aspect of the film, there were next to zero expectations from this album, looking at the number of music directors it has, and that most are those rappers from Punjab, who have been constantly trying to ruin the Bollywood music industry (no offense, but the whole culture of Bollywood has vanished due to their entry). The people that make up this long list of composers for this film are, Yo Yo Honey Singh, Dr. Zeus, Tigerstyle, Indeep Bakshi, Jatinder Shah, Meet Bros. Anjjan, Milind Gaba & Jassi Katyal. Of course, since there are so many composers, it is obvious that each of them has only one song. And also, there are chances that some would deliver good things, as well. So, here’s what I thought about the music! 


1. Birthday Bash
Singers ~ Yo Yo Honey Singh & Alfaaz, Music by ~ Yo Yo Honey Singh, Lyrics by ~ Alfaaz

So finally, after five months of bedrest (according to rumours..) Aapka apna Yo Yo Honey Singhaaaa is back! (At least it might seem like ‘finally’ for his followers and fans… Not that much for me 😝) After giving us two appreciable songs — compared to his others — in ‘The Shaukeens’ last year, he is back with one song in this relatively small film. One expected him to have gotten some sense after being ill for five months, but it doesn’t look like it, going by the sing he gave us. Naturally, it’s a party song, situated at the birthday party of a girl in the movie. Techno beats “welcome” us into the song, rather loudly too, for that matter. But they manage to grab our attention, so no qualms about them. Later on, Alfaaz joins in, singing some atrocious lines he wrote. Yo Yo seems to have used another male singer besides him, for the first time, in this song. However, it doesn’t make much difference, because Alfaaz also sings with the same level of atrocity. The hookline, though, is really captivating, and it must be the main reason for this song getting so many listeners. Honey’s rap is the same old stuff — trying-to-be-cool, but failing in that miserably. About the lyrics, the lesser said is better. So, the guy tries to impress the girl on her birthday by getting for her various stuff like ‘LV ka bag’, ‘Gucci’ but she doesn’t get impressed and does ‘nakhre’. I mean, what an osiginal idea!! These lyrics should win..win… a MIRCHI MUSIC AWARD!! :\ Something that is worth hearing in the song, though, are the arrangements and the beats. As I said earlier, they are really captivating and give one reason to hear this song, but not on loop. The composition being a typical Yo Yo Honey Singh composition, it will mostly appeal to his fans. Honey Singh opens his accpunt this year on an average note, with a typical party track.

 

2. Tipsy Hogai
Singers ~ Miss Pooja & Rajveer Singh, Music by ~ Dr. Zeus, Lyrics by ~ Zora Randhawa & Mavi Bains

Dr. Zeus enters the album with his sole composition, another clubbish track, but this time with female vocals. And to do the honours for those female vocals, is the ‘Second Hand Jawaani’ fame, Miss Pooja. While she might have sounded good in that song, (because her voice was not differentiable from Neha Kakkar’s over there) she sounds utterly annoying in this song, what with that screeching, high-pitched voice. The composition is good, and catchy too, but she spoils it all. Dr. Zeus uses some of his “lovely” sound effects from ‘Lovely’ (Happy New Year) in this track, like those ear-piercing screams of random ladies and that shattering glass. Whatever it be, the composition and arrangements at least provide some relief from the weird voice of that female singer. The line “munda mere vaal vekhe, main vi ohde vaal vekhan”, is weirdly addictive. Dr. Zeus also uses some tune from the song, ‘Let The Music Play’, which was a composition by Shamur. Rajveer Singh gets to sing these lines, and does it very inexpressively. The antaras resemble ‘Lovely’ a lot! And therefore, sound good, but it just increases the doubt that Dr. Zeus can’t get over ‘Lovely’. Lyrics are nothing to be mentioned specially, either and I don’t see how it needed two people to write it! A sequel to ‘Lovely’, in a slower pace, and in an irritating voice. Dr. Zeus, next time, bring something new if you can!

 

3. Zaalim Dilli
Singers ~ Jazzy B & Hard Kaur, Music by ~ Tigerstyle, Lyrics by ~ Bunty Bains

This one is full of the Punjabi factor, and jazzy B’s unique vocals help in making it sound more Punjabi. Hard Kaur gets to start, with her rap, not that impressive. When Jazzy B enters, the condition does improve a bit, and the song sounds more catchy. However, barring Jazzy B’s vocals, nothing stands out much in the song. The arrangements are the regular techno arrangements, with a dubstep touch, which become a bit dull and boring after a certain time. The lyrics are nothing great in this song either, or maybe I didn’t understand them because I don’t understand the Punjabi language. 😅 The composition is catchy, but nothing that would secure a good long shelf life for the song. Tigerstyle, who I’ve heard about for the first time, has composed a very ordinary track, that might attract you at first, but then wear off in successive listens! Nothing new, and mildly attractive!

 

4. Tere Liye
Singers ~ Indeep Bakshi & Soni B, Music by ~ Indeep Bakshi, Lyrics by ~ Indeep Bakshi

Subtle piano notes start the song off on a pretty cool and calm note, enhanced by Indeep’s humming. When he starts singing, you might feel that he sounds a little weird, as the music is louder than his voice. However, it is nevertheless a very likable song, despite the fact that his voice has been overshadowed by the music. After ‘Saturday Saturday’, who ever expected Indeep to surprise us with such a beautiful sad, romantic track? Yet, he succeeds in his attempt, and manages to churn out a soulful number, thanks to the arrangements, mostly. Beautiful flute, piano and even tablas act as attractions in the song. At places, Indeep sounds a lot like Himesh Reshammiya, with the nasal twang in his voice. Soni B gets a beautiful, melodious part to sing, which leaves a smile on your face even though it is very short. She shines in that small duration as well. Though the lyrics might not be that great, the soulful composition and arrangements make up for it. Indeep surprises with this romantic angle, and he also gives us the first #5StarHotelSong!!! of the album!

 

5. Janib (Duet Version) / Janib (Female Version)
Singers ~ Arijit Singh & Sunidhi Chauhan / Sunidhi Chauhan, Music by ~ Jatinder Shah, Lyrics by ~ Kumaar

This next song, is by a composer who’s been making it big in the Punjabi industry for quite some time now, Jatinder Shah. So he makes his entry into Bollywood with this song, and I must say, what a PERFECT debut! This is one of those songs that makes you feel that you’ve never had enough of it, and keep listening to it repeatedly, without getting bored even once! Let me explain. First of all, the composition itself is so sweet, romantic and soothing, that it transports you mentally to Punjab in its purest sense. These rappers who’ve been trying to uphold Punjab’s glory nowadays in Bollywood, have not done even half as much as Jatinder does here with just one song. I don’t know why, because it doesn’t have that Punjabi rustic feel or anything, but yet it seems so Punjabi-flavoured on hearing it. Both the versions of the song are equally beautiful and attractive, with that sweet tune not letting you leave it ever, till it ends! Arijit in the duet version, of course, is a cherry on the cake, because Sunidhi has much less verses as compared to him in that one. His Punjabi aalaap in Punjabi is breathtaking! However, at the same time, you’ve got to admit that Sunidhi, in her solo version, has done wonderfully, and yet again broken all stereotypes people seem to have enforced upon her that she can only sing upbeat songs (even though she keeps proving her versatility). How well she manages the high notes while at the same time, keeping great control over her voice in the low parts. In the duet, the beats are lively, pleasant and soothing. Excellent use of strings, electronic tablas, water drop sounds, matka, enhances the shine of the song. The female version has pretty much the same arrangements, with no instantly observable amendments. Lyrics are also praiseworthy. Kumaar’s use of words like ‘janib’ and ‘wajib’ in this context sounds great. Composition, arrangements, lyrics and vocals, all being perfect, this song surely becomes the best song of this album! I’ve written way too much; too further witness this beauty, stop whatever you’re doing and hear it! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

6. Meri Marzi Teri Raza
Singer ~ K. Mohan, Music by ~ Meet Bros. Anjjan, Lyrics by ~ Kumaar

Meet Bros. Anjjan enter the soundtrack with their contribution, a soulful rock song, sung beautifully by Agnee’s K. Mohan. It starts off with an awesome dotara and guitar riff, which captivates you right from the beginning. When that divine sarangi joins in to increase our interest in the song, it just becomes a hundred times better. The song seems like an out-and-out inspirational and motivational song, going by its tune, and lyrics. K. Mohan’s unique deep voice gives the song a whole new depth, and this depth transports the song to its peak. 😀 His vocals are really very intriguing, and throughout the entire six-odd minute duration of the song, they make you keep listening, and you never know where those six minutes went. The composition by Meet Bros. Anjjan really comes across as one of their career’s best, and given the type of songs they have made themselves known for composing these days, I really have to applaud them on their successful effort at composing an inspirational track like this one. Arrangements are great as well, with rock guitars, drums, and whatever string instrument that is in the first interlude, is just mind blowing. Of course, Meet Bros. Anjjan also treat us with more of the sarangi throughout the song. The backing chorus singing “Ooohh khuda”, sounds brilliant and has been very effectively appointed. Once again, Kumaar gives appreciable lyrics, and describes well the situation of somebody who is irritated with his life, and asking God “Why?!” All-in-all, a very impressive song by Meet Bros. Anjjan, and a successful attempt at trying something different. #5StarHotelSong!

 

7. Saddi Dilli
Singer ~ Milind Gaba, Music by ~ Milind Gaba, Lyrics by ~ Milind Gaba

So, after a short relief of some beautiful, mind blowing songs, here comes another rapper, ready to make his mark in the album, in his own small way. Okay, if you’re on of those people who likes club beats, I’m with you on that. The beats in this song are really catchy, but I would warn you not to get lured by that. These beats trapped me, and might try you as well. The song sounds decent and nothing intolerable, until Milind starts doing a wannabe Honey Singh rap, which just seems cheap. However, let’s have a round of applause for him, because if he was supposed to mimic Honey Singh with this song, he has succeeded and passed with full marks!! When he started the rap, I doubted whether it was really someone other than Honey. Listen for yourself and come back to me if it doesn’t sound like Honey. Whatever. I hope you guys get sarcasm. Moving on, some more irritating things are left to discuss, such as the creaking of that chair. :\ Lyrics are supposed to describe Delhi, I guess, but more than that, it talks about youngsters partying in Delhi at night, and wasting their time singing some idiotic rap. If you want an account of what happened in and after the party, then hear the song, because this rapper has been kind enough to tell us that, too, as if it’s an Akbar-Birbal story! How “generous” of him! :\ You get the point, man. Skip the song.

 

8. Maa De Dandeya
Singer ~ Jassi Katyal, Music by ~ Jassi Katyal, Lyrics by ~ Kumaar

I guess the sound of a conch shell, the bell of a temple, the drone of the tanpura, is supposed to mean that something divine and utterly religious is supposed to follow. That too, in the traditional Hindu style. But who was expecting a maata ka jaagran, which is just so irritating, and too Punjabi to even sound like a song!? I get that it is intentionally supposed to be like that, but with this song, the makers have gone and taken it too far. I mean, seriously? A Punjabi rap and maata ka jaagran do not work well together!! The “Jai Mata Di” chants just do not sound well in this song. Kumaar’s lyrics might be comical and satirical, but it would’ve been better, had they been given to a better composed song, which was catchier. Vocals don’t matter in such a song anyways, because of most of it being just something you and me can go and speak in a mic in front of two-thousand people. This song sounds like something that should have been a background piece in a movie like ‘PK’ or ‘OMG’. Weird, and not at all catchy.


Dilliwaali Zaalim Girlfriend. An album with eight songs and eight music composers. Eight different styles and moods. So, there you have variety. But before you think that I’m praising it, let me tell you, that this isn’t praiseworthy, but in this album, the same variety which I usually praise for other albums, turns out to be a curse for this album. Each of the composers, trying to contribute to the album in their own particular way doesn’t exactly assure a superhit album — or a musically rich one either. Out of those that do impress, Jatinder Shah is the one we’ll be expecting more and more from in the coming days. In deep tried something new with a romantic track, whereas Meet Bros. Anjjan surprised as always. (Because I don’t really expect from them, but still get the results). So this album full of some really “zaalim” rappers, turns out to be a waste of our time except for a few stupendous tracks!
