Simran is an upcoming Bollywood drama film, directed by Hansal Mehta, produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Shailesh R. Singh, and Amit Agarwal. The film stars Kangana Ranaut, Soham Shah, Mark Justice, Hiten Kumar and Esha Tiwari Pande in crucial roles. The film revolves around a Gujarati lady settled in the United States of America, who gets involved in crime. The film does seem quirky and very racy, and definitely very humorous. Now, Hansal Mehta usually does not rely on music to carry his films forward, as is evident from the fact that out of his recent film, ‘Shahid’ had just one song (not even released properly by a music label), and ‘Aligarh’ had no songs. Then there was ‘Citylights’, which, due to it being a joint venture with the Bhatts, had a stellar album by Jeet Gannguli. This film seems to be Hansal’s lightest film in a long time, and the result is that we can read the names of Sachin-Jigar in the credits, for music. Now, roping in Sachin-Jigar can’t mean anything except that Hansal wants great music for this film, doesn’t it? Accordingly, Sachin-Jigar have scored six songs for the film, and very situational too. Still, before I reveal much, let’s see how the music fares!!


1. Lagdi Hai Thaai

Singers ~ Guru Randhawa & Jonita Gandhi, Lyrics by ~ Vayu

“Doodho nahaao, phoolo phalo tum,
LED jaisi karna glow tum,
Sabko duayein yeh naseeb rakhna,
Jodi sada ye muskuraaye!
Maike ki photo ik kareeb rakhna,
Aisa na ho ki bhooli jaaye, jaaye, jaaye!
Jadon nache baby sajj dhajj, Lagdi hai thaai!”

It must be so difficult to compose for seven film albums in a year, but Sachin-Jigar are up and about, composing for the fourth album, which happens to be ‘Simran’. The first song matches Sachin-Jigar’s roots, as it is a Gujarati track by soul, but Punjabi by sound. Actually, it’s a beautifully thought out fusion of Gujarati and Punjabi, something nobody would ever be able to do this well and this seamlessly! The composition is perfectly suitable for a song that should make you get up and dance, and the desi touch, both Punjabi and Gujarati, add to the enjoyability of the song. Both the mukhda and the antara have been composed on the same tune, and Sachin-Jigar follow the trend to keep the song short and more appealing. The short length never hampers the beauty of the song. The hookline is amazing as well, but it is the arrangements that makes the song sound amazing. When it starts, you may be quick enough to dismiss it as yet another typical Punjabi number, added into the album just to be another ‘London Thumakda’ (Queen), but later you realise the magic, when the Gujarati dhols begin to awe you. The brass band (Trumpets by Kishore Sodha) is used very nicely here, and without sounding stale or heard-before, it provides a nice and fresh touch. But what is really amazing, is that wonderful flute (Naveen Kumar) which has been played in a very typical Gujju style, and it does nothing but inspire you to learn how to play flute! 😛 But I’m sure this kind of a flautist would take years to become so good! The vocals are amazing. At first, I thought Guru Randhawa has been chosen just because he has a history of many pop songs with T-Series, but turns out, he has given the Punjabi touch to the song very genuinely, and keeps aside all his pop song background for this one filmy song! Jonita is a surprise package; singing in Gujarati and all — though I think she is Gujarati. Anyway, she sings the old lady portions with as much ease as she does the lead heroine’s portions! In fact, she sings the Dadi Maa portions in Gujarati even better!! One thing I didn’t enjoy was the drunk part at the end, it seemed forced. Vayu’s lyrics are some of the most positive wedding song lyrics I’ve seen in Bollywood, a place where people come to weddings only to eat, drink and dance. But here, Vayu makes the characters sing things like “LED Jaisi Karna Glow Tum!” I swear, it is one of the most positive blessings I’ve heard in a Bollywood wedding song, and so less dramatic than the blessings they used to sing in songs like ‘Maahi Ve’ (Kal Ho Naa Ho) and all! All in all, this is a very enjoyable Gujju-Punjabi fusion, with amazing arrangements to accompany the energetic vocals!!

2. Pinjra Tod Ke

Singer ~ Sunidhi Chauhan, Lyrics by ~ Priya Saraiya

Kismat ki dori jo, baandhi woh kholi,
Jeene chali, main abb zindagi,
Pinjra tod ke, tod ke, udd jaana hai,
Baahein kholke, kholke, udd jaana hai!”

The next song starts off as a mellow composition, with piano notes almost assuring you that this is going to be a sad number. However, it is wonderful to see how Sachin-Jigar seamlessly change the mood of the song, making it uplifting and motivational as the song progresses. That is almost like a symbol infused into the song by Sachin-Jigar. The lyrics by Priya Saraiya talk about breaking free of restrictions, and flying freely — so Sachin-Jigar have probably structured the song in a way to resemble that, starting off very slowly, but breaking free subsequently! What a wonderful form the song takes on, once you realise that! Sachin-Jigar’s composition is nothing new, it is the usual Sunidhi pathos, but it works wonders even though it is heard-before. After all, it isn’t necessary for things to be complicated to like them, is it? The hookline is very motivating, as is the second antara, a sprightly conclusion to the otherwise soft song. It takes on a more energetic tempo and composition, and even has more energetic arrangements, since the electric guitars and drums truly break out in that part. The rest of the arrangements have a soothingly Western touch — starting off with amazing piano, progressing into a euphoric acoustic guitar-led arrangement, until the aforementioned second antara arrives. The interludes contain a wonderful “Oley Oley“, by a backing vocalist I suspect is Jonita Gandhi, she sounds exactly like her. This type of song nowadays, usually goes to Sunidhi, and she aces it, as always. It’s nice to see her finally getting recognised not only as a singer of those upbeat numbers she was terribly typecast for in the late 2000s. Priya Saraiya’s lyrics, as mentioned before, are motivating and uplifting, in the true sense! This is probably Priya’s best work in a long time! A beautiful song, with a simple and heard-before vibe, but still manages to impress monumentally!!

3. Meet

The next song happens to be a very happy-go-lucky romantic song, sung by Arijit, the kind of song Sachin-Jigar have usually done many times with Atif. Since their songs with Arijit have always been unconventional and never-heard-before, this comes as a surprise, as it conforms to the regular Arijit school of romance. However, the composition is really charming, and has you hooked (at least to the hookline) in the first listen. In the subsequent listens you “try” to get hooked to the mukhda and antara. Sadly, I still can’t recall the tunes of these portions immediately, even after having listened to the song at least six times by now. Does that mean the song is bad? Not at all. The song is amazing. Sachin-Jigar weave magic even with those notes that evoke memories of compositions by other composers, but doesn’t really evoke memories of any song in particular. It has the charm of an old Bollywood song, and it is the kind of composition to which we would say “Ah, the nostalgia”, after listening to it after a long time somewhere in the future. It is for this reason that the song gets such a huge repeat value even though it isn’t hooking as such. The hook has wonderful variations Arijit takes not every time, so they remain exclusive, but you keep waiting for the times he does take those variations! The arrangements are just as soothing as the composition; again, a wonderful piano piece opens the song, coupled with a magical and fairy-tale-like strings portion, until the Acoustic guitars come in to lighten up the mood. The whole thing sounds so fulfilling with that wonderful composition. The guitar riff repeats throughout the song. The interlude has a nice flute portion, which keeps you listening, if not hooked. Arijit aces such songs, and does so yet again. Again, I must mention those wonderful aalaaps of his, in the hookline. Priya writes amazing lyrics here too, but here they’re quite simple, even more simple than ‘Pinjra Tod Ke’, and has a plain and straightforward theme — love. A charming love song, with simplicity ruling it.

4. Single Rehne De

Aur koi kaam nahi hai kya??”

A laugh riot arrives next, with a song that’s evidently about the main character trying to convince her father to let her stay single. There is actually very less by way of composition in the song, whatever little there is, just keeps repeating. The song is more like a rap, but it is the lyrics that hold it higher than it would have been. Vayu cracks you up with humorous lines that usually don’t find their way into songs; they are typical to scripts of rom-coms, but I find it very cool for them to find their way into a song. The production too, is good, but very repetitive again. Nevertheless, it goes with the unconventional nature of the lyrics. Shalmali Kholgade renders the rap with a feisty attitude, and Divya Kumar, relegated to the background does his one line well. Shalmali says the conversational portions of the song, at the beginning in such a funny, humorous way, that you start to get interested in the song due to her! Not a very fresh composition, but fresh lyrics and vocals, and even arrangements, which are sadly repeated too much!

5. Simran

Na jaane tu chali re kahaan!”

The title song which we heard in the trailer is presented to us next, and it is this song which is actually the one that took the most time for me to like. The composition is very likeable, and has a lilting charm to it, in a very playful way, and has a charming ‘Barfi’-esque vibe to it, with the numerous sound effects and the whole description of the main character. The composition is great, if you look at it, but the arrangements confused me. Firstly, I was apprehensive about them because they were so similar to the ‘Barfi’ title track, with the whole accordion, mandolin and vocal sound effects, that I wasn’t sure if I liked them! I love ‘Barfi’, but I just felt weird about this song being so close to that. Later on, I started appreciating the arrangements, because of their lilting European touch and it was definite that Sachin-Jigar’s music would be inspired by Pritam’s as they were his disciples after all! Jigar has sung the song himself, and he has carried it out very well, and his raw, Un-autotuned vocals make the song even better as it sounds more natural and casual! The lyrics by Priya too, do a great job in acquainting us with the character of Simran, and her nature. A good title song, with an amazing arrangement.

♪ Baras Ja

Now this song released later, a few days after T-Series had released the “Full Album”. Coincidentally, it had flooded in Mumbai on that day, and they came with a song called ‘Baras Ja’ the same night, so maybe they were waiting. 😶 Anyway, the song is probably the best, and least simple song on the soundtrack. It has a very complicated tune, but in spite of that, it is so easily loveable! It starts with a very sublime sound of the matka, and again, a soothing flute portion (Sachin-Jigar have really gotten it right with the flute in this album!!) that ensures you that this song was worth the wait! The composition is beautiful, very 90s, and very earthy at the same time, being very soothing. The antara is very, very amazingly composed, and Sachin-Jigar mix elements of Pritam’s and Rahman’s style of composition, to present to us a song, that is rooted to Indian music, especially in the arrangements. The song is decorated with beautiful flute pieces, and the Indian percussion really helps give it that earthy feel. Wonderful piano notes provide the much needed Western touch to the song too, but the Indian-ness overpowers it. Mohit Chauhan reminds us of his ‘Tum Se Hi’ (Jab We Met) days, and croons the song just as mellifluously. He does get a beautiful song all to himself after a long time, after having two songs by Pritam in ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’, sharing space with a co-singer in both of them. This is his first solo song after a long time! Priya Saraiya’s lyrics again, are very effective in bringing out the romance, and help give the song another thing to boast about. If it had been released earlier, it would’ve been easier for people to find, with all the other songs of the album, and got more audience! I am sad because this is definitely the best of the album!!

Simran is yet another beautiful album from Sachin-Jigar. After three albums this year, out of which one was a multicomposer one, they strike gold yet again with their fourth one. I definitely think we can attribute the beauty of this album to one and only one reason — that it’s a solo composer album, and the director Hansal Mehta was clear in what he wanted. The freedom and creative liberty given to Sachin-Jigar is evident, because they’ve made some of the most beautiful melodies, without making things too complicated. That shows us how things can be made more attractive by following a simple formula — “Simple Rehne De!!

TWO GENTLEMEN WHO HARDLY EVER DISAPPOINT!! (A GENTLEMAN – Music Review)

A Gentleman is an upcoming Bollywood action comedy, starring Sidharth Malhotra, Jacqueline Fernandez, Suniel Shetty and Darshan Kumar in lead roles. The film is directed by Raj Nidimoru & Krishna DK and produced by Fox Star Studios. The film features Sidharth Malhotra in a double role, one being Sundar Susheel, and the other ‘Risky’. Hence the tagline of the film, ‘Sundar Susheel Risky’. The music of the film is given by the go-to music composers for Raj & DK, Sachin-Jigar. Going by the music of ‘Shor In The City’, ‘Go Goa Gone’, and ‘Happy Ending’, I’m sure this one’s also going to be a treat for people who love quirky music, and the genre of action comedy would give amazing song situations as well! Sachin-Jigar’s discography this year boasts of as many as seven film albums (with ‘Hindi Medium’ being a multicomposer one), and this one is the third to release. ‘Meri Pyaari Bindu’ remained my favourite album of the year until Pritam’s gigantic ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ released. I can just hope that this one follows suit and becomes another favourite of mine this year!


1. Disco Disco

Singers ~ Benny Dayal & Shirley Setia, Lyrics by ~ Vayu

“Aaja ve hila denge hum aaj angana,
tere naal karke beat drop nachna,
Dil disco disco bole saari raat SAJNA!!”

Sachin-Jigar’s third album of the year starts off with a very filmy disco song. Is filmy bad or good? Let’s find out. The composition is very catchy, especially the cross line that goes “Aaja Ve Hila Denge Hum Aaj Anganaa“. That part sounds so much like a retro number. The hookline is a typical Bollywood fare, but still manages to hook the listeners. I, for one, found this song more instantly appealing than any of the others on the album (because they took time to grow). The mukhda and antara follow suit, and don’t let the interest of the listener waiver. The major reason you are hooked to the song till the end, must be the short duration. Sachin-Jigar keep the song at a crisp 2:47, neither too long nor too short. The arrangements are great: the disco-esque feel comes out through the nice bass,drums and guitars, and a totally unexpected tumbi (Tapas Roy). The tumbi is what actually makes the song sound very experimental. It gets a nice solo portion in the interlude and towards the end. The vocals are entertaining; Can Benny Dayal ever disappoint in a club number? I love how he pronounces “sajna” as “sajjena“! Sachin-Jigar help Shirley Setia get her first Bollywood song, and despite everything against her on social media, she really handles the song well, and Sachin-Jigar with their genius thoughts, know how to use her voice to the best effect — in a club song! However, she does mumble a bit in the antara, but I guess the song called for that. Vayu’s lyrics are the usual Hinglish lyrics of Bollywood, but work quite well in the filmy song. A totally filmy disco song!

2. Baat Ban Jaaye

Band ho kamre mein hum do, aur chaabi kahin kho jaaye toh!
Toh baat ban jaaye!!”

Here onwards in the album, things get a bit more Sachin-Jigar-ish, in that you take more time to get accustomed to the song and like it. The time may be two listens, three listens or even more, but the song is actually are wonderful once you listen to them, with close attention to the music. This one here, is a beach party number, and again, it has a bit of a retro touch. It starts off with a very contemporary vibe, the composition flowing like a romantic song. However, it takes an unexpected turn in the cross line (“hum dono aur yeh saari raat“) where, if you pay close attention to the music, a retro vibe kicks in. The composition for the hookline is a trademark Sachin-Jigar one, and makes you groove instantly, especially the hoots after the words “baat ban jaaye” have been sung. The antara is where the song loses pace and we lose interest; that composition is quite heard-before. Luckily enough, this song is short too, which makes the cross line come back soon enough. The arrangements are fantastic here, and suit as a beach party number. Acoustic guitars start the song off, giving the freshness to the song, as a beach number should be. The retro vibe I talked about consists of amazing guitars played in a retro manner. The digital beats are more heavy in this song, and quirky sounds decorate the song. The vocals are good, Siddharth Basrur leading the way in getting the listeners hooked. However, Priya Saraiya seems a bit too much autotuned here, and it loses the charm of her actual voice. Her lyrics too, are an ordinary fare, but suit the situation well, especially the hookline. A party song that seems ordinary, but will grow!

3. Chandralekha

Mere dil pe dent permanent pad gayi, nazrein jo mili,
Hadd se bhi zyaada cute tu, mere karmon ka fruit tu,
Koi hai gagan mein toh heaven jahaan se aakar tu giri!”

The next song throws us back into the years, with a characteristic rock and roll/hard rock vibe to it. It slightly resembles what Sachin-Jigar had done in ‘Yeh Jawaani Teri’ (Meri Pyaari Bindu), but in a more Westernized manner. The composition again, takes time to grow, and till then all you can really focus on is the music. The guitars and drums are groovy as expected in a rock and roll song, but of course, Sachin-Jigar add a surprise element every time, and here, it is that sensuous saxophone, which sounds amazing every time it plays. The composition is good too, and like I said, it just takes time for you to catch on. The hookline is the mukhda, making it very short yet again. Two antaras follow, and also an interlude by Jonita. I loved the effect Sachin-Jigar have given to the last line of each antara — “Mud Mud Ke Na Dekha“, and “mujhe ek bhi paise ka”. There’s another amazing saxophone solo in the interlude before Jonita’s portions, and that’s even more impressive. The characteristic piano played in that retro manner, is mind blowing too. The vocals are amazing. I mean, how can Vishal Dadlani fail to crank up the energy? His husky voice is all you need to make this song entertaining. Jonita gets a very small part to sing, which is more like an interlude, but she nails it, in the traditional ‘Bollywood girl’ ‘I’m-Not-Interested’ manner. Vayu’s lyrics are fun as well, and kudos to him for using a name like Chandralekha for the girl, and also to Sachin-Jigar for fitting it into the tune so perfectly! A retro rock song that is really stress-busting!

4. Laagi Na Choote

Chaahe judaa,tere mere, raaste hain magar,

Chahoon kabhi na yeh toote!
Laagi na choote… Laagi na choote!”

After three upbeat numbers, and after much thought about whether the album does indeed have a soft and mellow number or not, here pops up a romantic song. Actually, this song was the last to release, so the makers successfully kept the romantic song a secret till the very end. The song falls into the category of ‘Slow Poison’ romantic songs — as you can tell, the song does take time to grow again! However, this time, the amount of time it takes is relatively less, thanks to the amazing composition! It has shades of Sachin-Jigar’s own ‘Thoda Thoda’ (Jayantabhai Ki Luv Story), but is way more intense. The mukhda is very trademark Sachin-Jigar, and the way the female portions are composed in the lower octave, is also, very characteristic of Sachin-Jigar’s previous works. It increases the magic manifold. The hook is something you just can’t forget soon! It has been made to stun us, and stun it does! The flow of the song is just so powerful, you are attentive till the end. Again, a short duration helps that to happen; your attention doesn’t wander somewhere in the middle. The arrangements are minimal and digital beats make up most of the background of the song. But the piano at the beginning and throughout is just so captivating, that you can’t dislike it. The guitar in the interlude also sounds unconventional. As for the vocals, Arijit and Shreya always make a good pair, and this time, Arijit takes the high portions while Shreya quite expertly handles the low portions, a role we see her taking up quite rarely. Well, Sachin-Jigar even made Rekha Bhardwaj (who is know for her beautifully high-pitched voice) to take up an amazing low-pitched voice in ‘Mileya Mileya’ (Happy Ending) and ‘Judaai’ (Badlapur), so I guess it’s just an innate trick that they use! Priya Saraiya’s lyrics are good too, and she keeps them simple and sweet, avoiding heavy philosophical ideas. A beautiful romantic song, with nothing new, but really has you hooked!

5. Bandook Meri Laila

“Aaye haaye haaye, yeh goli daayein baayein jaaye,
Har disha mein yeh visphot kardi ae,
Jaaye jaaye jaaye, jiya na jaaye jaaye jaaye,
Meri jaan pe yun chot kardi ae,
Seene mein tuney, bullet utaari toh,
Udey jugnu haan, udey jugnu,
Le gayi dil ko, kudi tu shikari,
Bana Majnu main, bana Majnu!
Bandook meri Laila!”

Now this was the song everybody was waiting for ever since the motion poster of the film had released. It is described by the makers as an action song, and an action song it is! The song is probably some of the most addictive stuff to have released in the recent years. The hook has had everyone grooving to it for a long time. I don’t know why, maybe because of high expectations, the song seemed very flat the first time I heard it. However, with every subsequent listen, it grew more and more. The composition is addictive; the mukhda is awesome, and the hookline is world-famous now. The rest of the song is mostly rap. Now, about the rap. The rap by Sidharth Malhotra seems very odd, and it seems like a publicity stunt. Earlier this year, Sachin-Jigar made Parineeti sing a ghazal ‘Maana Ke Hum Yaar Nahin’ (Meri Pyaari Bindu), and she aced it. However, here Sidharth seems a bit dull, and when Raftaar performs his rap, you can tell the huge difference between both of them. Of course, Raftaar is a professional rapper and that’s the reason, and I feel he should’ve gotten to sing the entire rap. The ‘Ban meri Laila‘ hooks are very addictive, and the way they sing ‘Laila!!‘ after that line is amazing! The arrangements are international sounding, and very impressive. It falls into the Tropical house genre which Pritam introduced earlier this year with the ‘Raabta’ title track. The EDM is highly impressive. It starts like a Chainsmokers track, and gets better than any Chainsmokers track as it progresses! The action theme is brought out amazingly through the arrangements. Ash King as the leading vocalist, does a fabulous job; it’s been a long time since we’ve heard him in such a groovy song! And Jigar Saraiya sounds great on the hookline. Vayu’s lyrics are fun and interesting as well. The song has a proper international touch to it, but it could’ve been better without Sidharth’s rap!

A Gentleman is yet another Sachin-Jigar album that doesn’t disappoint. It’s so tough to have an album in which all the songs have repeat value, and especially for an action film. Thankfully enough, Sachin-Jigar and Raj & DK always make a good team, and all of their albums together have been quirky and cool, not to mention catchy. And such albums are the ones that become chartbusters right away. After ‘Meri Pyaari Bindu’, Sachin-Jigar provide another wholesome album with ‘A Gentleman’! Sachin-Jigar are two gentlemen who hardly ever disappoint!!

I would like to start by thanking YRF for releasing the full album early, but giving no such indication by uploading a jukebox or a complete OST on iTunes so that we don’t keep waiting for more! And thanks (this isn’t sarcasm) to Jigar Saraiya for confirming on Twitter, in reply to my question, that it is indeed the full album.

Meri Pyaari Bindu is an upcoming Bollywood rom-com starring Parineeti Chopra and Ayushmann Khurrana in lead roles. The film is directed by Akshay Roy and produced by Maneesh Sharma. The film is about a writer played by Ayushmann, who, after being frustrated at the lack of critical appreciation his novels get, despite him being a successful writer, moves back to his hometown Kolkata to find inspiration to write better literature. Well, he has been writing his new book for three years. It so happens that he is reminded of one of his best friends, and stumbles upon a cassette of their favourite songs’ playlist. It is from here, that he gets Inspiration for his new novel. So, the crux of the film is quite interesting — it seems sweet and simple, and a look at the many “mini-trailers” (or chapters) they’ve released for the film will reveal that it is a bit quirky and very musical too. All in all, it is something I’m waiting for, and I believe everyone is waiting for. So without ruminating any more upon the movie, let us cherish the music till then, as that is the only way to get closer to the movie before the release. The music for the film has been given by a duo whose music I appreciate and adore, and they’ve got a fair share of high ratings on this blog (not to mention a few forgiveable not-so-good ones), and that duo is the dynamic duo Sachin-Jigar. So last year, since they concentrated on Gujarati film music, they could only manage to do one Bollywood film, ‘A Flying Jatt’s, an album which was amazing musically, but lacked repeat value. Of course, this year they are the busiest music directors on the block, with five films including this one. For this music album, they’ve composed six tracks, a perfect number for a musical in Bollywood. Hoping that these men surprise us just as they always do (though it won’t be much of a surprise) I’m diving into this expected-to-be awesome album!


1. Maana Ke Hum Yaar Nahin

Singer ~ Parineeti Chopra, Lyrics by ~ Kausar Munir

Door se hi tum muskaana,

Nazron se naa karna tum bayaan,
Woh jisse inkaar nahin!
Maana ke hum yaar nahin!”

The album starts off with a song we have heard about a year ago, in the video where YRF announced the film. Parineeti was talking about how the makers insisted that she should sing the song. And right from that day, when I heard how beautifully she sings, I couldn’t wait for this day, when I would listen to the full song and review it. The song is essentially a ghazal, and Sachin-Jigar have composed it sooooo beautifully, that it reminds you of many 90s songs, or the 90s era in general, with its tune. The poetic words by Kausar Munir (more on them later) have been put to such a charmingly delightful tune by the duo, that it hardly seems like a sad song. The mukhda is so spectacular, it just pulls you into the song, and you won’t emerge out of it until the song is over. It is the antaras, though, that amazed me the most. Again, a spectacular tune, but this one sounds very layered, as if there are deeper meanings to it, which get revealed one by one, each time you replay the song. Also, Parineeti adds different nuances and variation in both antaras, so it almost feels as if both antaras are composed on the same tune, but still different. That brings us to her vocals. Parineeti’s voice has this rawness to it, which I haven’t heard in any of the actress-singers’ voices. (Well, maybe Priyanka Chopra and Shruti Hassan, but not beyond these). Her husky voice suits the ambience of the song so well, that it just transports you to another world. Of course, she is a trained classical singer, but her command over the tune is amazing considering that she must’ve not been in touch with singing for a long time. And an added bonus is that her voice hasn’t been autotuned! That’s brave, and I appreciate it. Not that it sounds bad anyway. Sachin-Jigar’s arrangements are out of this world. They recreate the 90s through the arrangements — that flute loop (Shreeram Sampath) is spell-binding! It has you hooked right from the first time it plays, and then it keeps on amazing you throughout the song. The folksy percussions (Arun Solanki) in the song are mystifying too. And the piano (Rinku Rajput), played so gracefully right when we don’t expect it, in small pieces all over the song, is so sweet! A special appearance by the sarangi (Dilshad Khan) in the second interlude is something you must not miss at any cost. (In other words, hear the full audio, not just the video promo!) Beside all these wonderful nostalgic instruments, the hardworking guitars (Krishna Pradhan) are sidelined, but they give a constant rhythm throughout, and if you listen carefully, they have an important contribution indeed. Now, I have saved the best for the last. And that is Kausar Munir’s lyrics. She gave us a wonderfully written album, “Begum Jaan” just last month. And she’s already at it again! Her words are so heartbreaking, it gives a whole new definition to sad songs. Both the antaras, not to mention the mukhda, have been written wonderfully! And Sachin-Jigar very cleverly knew how to put a tune to those words so that they don’t sound maudlin and melancholic. Splendid work by Sachin-Jigar and Kausar Munir. A sad song with a refreshing feel! My intuition tells me this will go on to be one of my favourite songs of the year, and probably all time.

2. Haareya

While we had a wonderful old-world-charm in the first song, Sachin-Jigar bring in their favourite, a nice modern touch, to the next song. The composition is odd! And I say that in the best way possible! It has this offbeat touch to it, a tune that is mostly associated with rock songs these days. But no, Sachin-Jigar, the experimentalists that they are, use it for a romantic song! And it works, and succeeds with distinction. The mukhda starts, and you start to get interested in what will come next. When a song compels you to listen to it further because of that reason, it has to be interesting! And then the hookline starts. So low-key, so modestly, so inconspicuously and oh-so-subtly! Unlike the hooklines in which the tempo, instrumentation and vocals go higher in pitch, loudness and whatnot, this one is exactly the opposite. It gets subtle and quiet after a huge and suspenseful buildup to it. It takes a genius to pull that off successfully, and therefore Sachin-Jigar must be geniuses! They could very well have added some rock elements in that hookline, but they refrained from doing so. And it just increased the appeal of the song manifold! Yes, a composition that suits the rock genre, has nothing but a simple (but very infectious, mind you) guitar riff in the arrangements. And I must mention Indrajit Chetia here, for his AMAAAAZZZZING guitar work throughout the song! Ayushmann’s Arijit’s (you’ll see why I did that) vocals are so impressive! The man brings in such a convincing imitation of Ayushmann’s voice, like the way he pronounces each word while singing and the slight nasal twang, that one would initially be confused whether Arijit has sung the song or Ayushmann. He gives his own voice a complete makeover and modifies it just to suit Ayushmann, and how crazy is that? I’ve not seen this happen in quite a while. These days, either a singer’s voice suits an actor by default, or it doesn’t. But a singer tweak his voice for an actor? That’s so 90s! And so amazing! In the antara, he does that amazing transition between the low octave and high octave, so effortlessly, that he does perfect justice to Sachin-Jigar’s composition, which I doubt anyone else could’ve pulled off. Guest lyricist Priya Saraiya writes in a mix of Punjabi and Hindi, and presents yet another amazing piece from her side. A lovestruck man’s emotions are depicted clearly by her writing. A nice experimentation, where a composition tailor-made for rock, is given an acoustic and unplugged type of arrangement. Of course, special mention to Arijit!

3. Ye Jawaani Teri

Well, we had two romantic songs, one mature and the other slightly more youthful. Be prepared to go even further down memory lane, as we go back to the main characters’ college days and are treated to an amazing retro treat from Sachin-Jigar’s music bank. So basically this is the fun song of the album where the two protagonists are in college, having fun, without a worry. And Sachin-Jigar’s track reflects the same attitude in it. The composition sounds odd at first, but once you realize what it is, you’ll be like “Ohhhhhhh”, and then realize the cleverness of the music directors. The hookline is what the song relies on to propel it, and very aptly, it has been composed to the tune of the iconic Shammi Kapoor guitar riff. After you realize that, the padding, like the mukhda and antara, start sounding amazing thanks to you having discovered the theme of the song. Particularly the line that Jonita sings before the hookline arrives, with that nasal touch, has an amazing tune! The arrangements stick to the retro theme very well, and the guitars (Shomu Seal) steal the show, aptly supported by amazing trumpets (Kishore Sodha), saxophone (Shyamraj) and drums (Debashish Banerjee). It all gives that required retro feel that the song needed. In places, it reminded me of ‘Let’s Talk About Love’ (Baaghi), another good song of the same genre, but one which was suppressed by mediocre vocals and composition. The vocals too, suit the song well, though I thought Nakash could’ve been substituted by Vishal Dadlani and the song would’ve gone miles higher. Jonita sounds very different from what we have heard from her in the Rahman and Pritam camps. She does that aforementioned retro-nasal thing superbly, and ditches her thin and sweet voice to bring in a tinge of naughtiness and youthfulness for this one. Kausar Munir’s lyrics here are purely situational, and I can’t really praise them or the opposite. A fun youthful number, that might take some time to grow.

4. Iss Tarah

Another retro-themed number joins the album, this time a disco song, composed in a trademark Michael Jackson way. Sachin-Jigar take their experimentalism further ahead with this one, and produce a crackling dance song. The composition in the beginning is so less, it almost sounds as if the singer is reciting the lines like a little child recites a poem in front of the class. However, that’s what increases the appeal of the song. And then when the line by Dominique comes in, you are dazzled by its brightness. Brightness as in, Sachin-Jigar’s smart use of the disco elements to make the composition beautiful. And then comes the hard-hitting hookline, which is one of the best I’ve heard in a while, and also something very similar to Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s composition style, a trio who I believe established this style of music in Bollywood. The arrangements are entrancing, especially the trumpet (Kishore Sodha) that plays in the hookline, and steals the limelight right away. The disco-themed digital beats are amazing, and set up a groovy beat even before the tune of the song starts. The guitars (Paresh Kamath) are great too, as are Sachin-Jigar’s clever additions of finger-snaps and the trademark disco sounds. The hookline’s arrangements are out of this world. The vocals too, are mind blowing. Clinton Cerejo, after his successful stint as a music director in Bollywood last year (in three movies) returns to the mic, and nails the song. But the one who steals the spotlight is his better half, Dominique, in her very short portion, that repeats just twice in the entire song, but leaves a lasting impression, and makes you love her voice so much! And that part, as mentioned above, has been composed just as well! Kausar’s lyrics are full of contrast, and it is very interesting to listen to. A successful disco-based retro number, which I can’t wait to watch in the movie!

5. Khol De Baahein

After a sad song, a romantic song and two dance numbers, it is romantic time again, and this time we get a rather unconventional romantic song. The composition is so beautiful and cute, and it reeks of the Bengali culture with its tune. It has this lilting, lulling tune that just doesn’t let you get bored. Yes, it does take some time to fully grow on you, but when it does, it does so very fulfillingly, and you end up loving the song unconditionally. The mukhda in Bengali, starts off the song wonderfully, while the hookline in Hindi is cute and harmonious. There’s a beautiful short stanza in Bengali after that (“kokhono kokhono…“) which just sounds so endearing. And the antara too, keeps you listening. All in all, Sachin-Jigar’s composition is a winner. The arrangements are no less. On the most part, it is a soothing guitar-led instrumentation (Guitars by Krishna Pradhan), and though the guitars aren’t hard-hitting they are just as amazing as the guitars in ‘Haareya’. The piano notes at the end of the song are beautiful as the conclusion of the song. Monali is the perfect choice as the singer; she goes back and forth between high and low notes effortlessly, and pronounces the Bengali words immaculately. She sounds very cute as always in this lulling romantic song. Kausar’s Hindi lyrics are great, but when I asked one of my friends for a translation of the Bengali lyrics, I got to know that Rana’s Bengali lyrics are just as endearing. Modest and simple, but very strong in terms of composition and arrangements and especially vocals!

6. Afeemi

Thodi naadaani si, thodi shaitaani si,
Dheeme se dheeme se, teri aadat badhti hai,
Tu hai toh mere roobaroo, par kya karoon,
Yakeen hi nahi aata,
Shaam se subah karoon, dekha karoon,
Raha bhi nahi jaata!
Afeemi, afeemi, afeemi hai yeh pyaar,
Afeemi hai tera mera pyaar!”

A very simple and humble song brings up the rear of the album. This song is a very sweet and beautiful romantic song, composed in a very trademark Sachin-Jigar way, keeping things sweet and simple. The composition starts off so effervescently, with that sprightly mukhda. And the hookline is a typical Bollywood romantic song hookline, nevertheless, it hooks you right away. The antara has been composed beautifully as well, one line strictly sounding very similar to a line from ‘Maana Ke Hum Yaar Nahin’ itself, but that’s alright. Also, the hookline sounds like the line “Pooche jo koi, toh tera naam doon“, from Sachin-Jigar’s own ‘Tera Naam Doon’ (Entertainment). Overall though, the song is addictive! Such a simple romantic song, which was also great in its composition, was long-needed in Bollywood. The arrangements follow conventional arrangements, in that it contains everything you would expect in a contemporary romantic song — guitars (Kalyan Baruah), piano (Rinku Rajput), drums (Lindsay D’mello). But the flute by Hamtu is unexpectedly amazing, as are the strings that pitch in occasionally. I personally loved the way the hookline is arranged, on that simple guitar riff, and I love those small rattle-like instrument additions that sound so lovely! Vocals are perfect, with Sanah Moidutty finally getting a song where she is allowed to sing more than or equal to her male co-singer (who in this case happens to be Jigar himself) which she couldn’t do in her previous two songs, ‘Moto Ghotalo’ (Gori Tere Pyaar Mein) and ‘Tu Hai’ (Mohenjo Daro). Her voice is a nice and sweet voice with the vocal quality of someone who has the potential to make it big in Bollywood, where such voices are lapped up by music directors. Jigar himself accompanies her fantastically, and I believe the duo has programmed his voice less than they normally do, and that adds to the natural touch in the song. Kausar’s lyrics are fascinating, and it also marks the first time (probably; I’m not a database) that someone has compared love to opium (‘afeem’ = opium), after comparing it to stuff like alcohol, and hookah bars. A very ‘Afeemi’ (addictive) song!

Meri Pyaari Bindu turns out to be just as great and musically rich as I expected it to be. Sachin-Jigar, after a hiatus in which they scored for one Bollywood film ‘A Flying Jatt’, which sadly didn’t have the potential to stay with us for long, they give us yet another taste of their awesomeness, after they had given us two of my favourite albums of theirs, ‘Happy Ending’ in 2014, and ‘Badlapur’ in 2015. Another feather in their cap, ‘Meri Pyaari Bindu’ might just be one of their best performances!

SACHIN-JIGAR’S EXPERIMENTAL FLIGHT!! (A FLYING JATT – Music Review)

A Flying Jatt is an upcoming Bollywood comedy/superhero/action movie which stars Tiger Shroff and Jacqueline Fernandez in lead roles, while Australian actor (and retired wrestler) Nathan Jones is essaying the role of the antagonist. The film has been directed by Remo D’Souza, who is back after more than a year after his last hit, ‘ABCD 2’, and produced by Shobha Kapoor, Ekta Kapoor, Sameer Nair abd Aman Gill. The story revolves around a very un-superhero-like superhero, played by Tiger Shroff, and his adventures. The synopsis for the movie under the movie trailer on YouTube says that the movie is an account of a young superhero who is scared of heights! I don’t know how exciting that will be to watch, as the movie already looks like a mixture of ‘Singh Is Bliing’ and ‘Krrish’, so much so that it might even be ‘Krrish 4’, wherein Krrish, through his magical powers, turns into a Jatt. 😀 Anyway, since the movie seems to be targeted at little children, the makers are free to get away with anything. Remo D’Souza cannot make a successful album to his movies without his trustworthy duo, Sachin-Jigar, who are on board for this movie as well, coming back after a year, after their two songs in ‘Hero’, before which their last full album was another Remo D’Souza movie! 😛 Of course, seeing the theme of the movie, something zany is expected, and since it is not ‘ABCD 3748’, ten dance songs aren’t expected, so the duo makes 6 songs. Now, to see how high these six songs fly!


1. A Flying Jatt (Title Track)
Singers ~ Raftaar, Mansheel Gujral & Tanishkaa Sanghvi, Lyrics by ~ Vayu Shrivastav, Rap Lyrics & Vocals by ~ Raftaar

The first song on the album is what Sachin-Jigar are known for. The whackiness, craziness and catchiness of it all is their signature style of composing such songs. The song starts off with an anthemic chant that goes “Ho aa gaye J.A.T.T. maaro saare seeti...” The tune that it has been composed in, is just so infectious, that it actually made me take interest in such a song which I would never have listened to otherwise! The opening line is just too catchy to leave the song halfway and dismiss it as stupid or bad. The “Pagg, peg, swag, set” chants are just as catchy and crazy. The base composition is good as well, and Mansheel Gujral, contestant of 2014’s ‘Raw Star’, renders it with the right amount of gusto and gangsta-swag! The composition is more like a Punjabi pop song, butt the treatment is purely Sachin-Jigar! The hookline is something that will grow on you as you keep progressing through the song; it is repeated so many times, that you end up loving it unknowingly! The mukhda has the perfect gangster-pop feel to it, while the first antara follows the same tune. It is the second antara, where Sachin-Jigar introduce a clever twist, with a little girl singing about “Flying Jatt”, who is apparently her boyfriend. And that girl is none other than Sachin’s own daughter, Tanishkaa Sanghvi. She sings the little girl’s part soooo cute, and it sounds good in the song, which is obviously made for children to pull their parents to the theaters in order to watch a superhero movie. Raftaar’s rap constitutes most of the song, and it is surprisingly very entertaining! Maybe because it isn’t unnecessarily added into a song that doesn’t need it! In fact, it gels in quite well with the song, which idolizes the protagonist, a flying Sikh superhero. Sachin-Jigar of course, can’t make a peppy song without some insane additions randomly thrown into the song. This time, it is the insanity of the chorus going “Pagg, peg, swag, set” followed by somebody singing “aajao aajao aajao saare!” It is so random, that you end up loving it so much! The arrangements are apt, with the whole song placed upon a techno base, which is addictive and peppy. Of course, the duo place an unexpected twist in the form of typical Punjabi dhols in the hookline once, and that part sounds awesome! The lyrics by Vayu are cool, and suit the superhero-theme. Raftaar’s rap is a very enjoyable “be-good” kind of rap, which again, will help the superhero attract kids’ attention! A title track that is very experimental and showcases Sachin-Jigar’s ability to get listeners (old or young), hooked! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

2. Toota Jo Kabhi Taara
Singers ~ Atif Aslam & Sumedha Karmahe, Lyrics by ~ Priya Saraiya

The next song is a haunting romantic song, composed beautifully on a scintillating background. The song starts off with sounds that indicate nighttime and a field with crickets chirping in it, with a grand orchestration accompanying it. And then the real magic starts, when the piano kicks in with such a haunting and catchy tune, which actually is the hooktune of the song. The silence of it all makes you so serene, that it is hard to believe! The duo’s composition is pure black magic, with notes that touch your heart and how! When the piano gives way to Atif’s voice, which starts off with a dulcet melody, you get ready for the best romantic song you’ve heard in quote some time, but then, the duo surprises you with a very unexpected high-pitched, grand second line, which builds up to the hookline, which is just as calming and soothing. The structure of the song is the most interesting thing of all. After the hookline, the singers hum the tune which had started off the song (on piano), and it sounds so heavenly and extremely lovely! The duo follows the new-age trend of composing two antaras with different compositions, and give one completely to Atif, while the other goes completely to Sumedha. Both the antaras are bliss, with haunting notes galore! The second one though, is my personal favourite, with Sumedha (who has worked with the duo before in the movie ‘Teree Sang’) singing in the low octaves so beautifully, that it sounds as if she is singing specially for you! Atif’s antara, on the other hand, treads higher octaves (yet not too high either) with a very melodious tune. The way he sings some words rapidly to bridge one line to the next is a very ingenious trick played by the duo! It sounds so magical! About the arrangements, I can write a whole essay!! Sachin-Jigar have set such an entrancing backing rhythm to the song, made of nothing but techno sounds, which are just so enchanting! The way they’ve used the instruments is mind blowing and spectacular; a perfect blend of haunting strings and lilting flute, and that beautiful piano loop will stay in your mind for a long time! Sparkling sounds accentuate the fantasy-like, dreamy composition very well. Finger snaps and brisk strings in the first interlude grab your attention, while the second interlude is highly reduced, with only a flute playing that haunting tune that usually plays on the piano, followed by Sumedha’s antara. The magic of the strings though, is just unmatchable. A great assortment of high and low pitched strings make the listening experience worthwhile. I can just imagine how it is going to sound in the theaters! Priya Saraiya’s lyrics are the icing on top of the extra-sweet cake. She writes the song wonderfully, making many references to dreams herself. So what wrong is it to call the song a dreamy one?? Nothing, right? The dreamiest song I have heard recently! A masterstroke by the whole team behind the song! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

3. Khair Mangda
Singer ~ Atif Aslam, Lyrics by ~ Priya Saraiya

The duo bring Atif back to sing the next song, which is another haunting, dreamy and lilting, but very emotional and heart touching song. The composition has dark shades and is pure black magic, something that instantly makes your hair stand on end and sends a chill down your spine. The composition is highly reminiscent of the duo’s own song ‘Chunar’ from Remo D’Souza’s previous movie, ‘ABCD 2’, but still manages to strike a chord with the listener. Treading on the emotional notes, the composition still has a charm that will make you ready to hear it again and again, for a countless number of times. The mukhda is quite soft, until it gets into the high notes just before the hookline, which is when the goosebumps start to appear. The hookline itself, is exceptionally hooking and haunting. The way Atif introduces small variations in the tune each time he sings “khair mangda“, is remarkable. The antara continues with the darkness, but in a different way. The duo has churned out a trademark Rahman-styled composition, something he would constantly give in the 90s. The arrangements are mostly guitars, and other digital sounds that help the song sound more graceful. The gracious strings that elevate the thrill in the song, are wonderful. Everything else is almost only done by the guitars, and some wonderful chimes, which make it sound very enchanting. The song is tailor-made for Atif, and he doesn’t disappoint, proving how beautiful a singer he is, yet again. The humming he does in the start and in the interludes, is mind blowing, though very short! Priya, on the other hand, is adept at writing heart-touching lyrics, which she shows yet again here, as well. Though most of it is in Punjabi, the listener can instantgy connect to the words and it grows very soon. A song that is on an emotional high, something that needs repeat listens to discover each and every aspect of the song. in other words, another masterpiece by Sachin-Jigar!! #5StarHotelSong!

 

4. Bhangda Pa
Singers ~ Vishal Dadlani, Divya Kumar & Asees Kaur, Lyrics by ~ Mayur Puri

After the pathos, the duo is back to what they love, and what we love them doing! And that is, an upbeat, happy-sounding track that will get you up and dancing. Of course, such songs are usually very situational, and you don’t always love them before you see them in the movie, with the surrounding content and their placement. Made with the intention of entertainment and enjoyment, this song is a dance fest. The duo’s composition is definitely nothing great, and a quite typical Punjabi bhangra track, but does manage to entertain you for as long as it lasts. The mukhda is a very interestingly structured one with very fast-paced lines, fun to hear being sung so rapidly by Vishal Dadlani and Divya Kumar, the powerhouse male voices behind the track. The hookline is not so addictive, but as I said, it may grow after watching the movie. The first antara has the same tune as the mukhda, and again, keeps you listening for that masterclass singing by both the lead male singers, each having their own unique voice texture and quality. Vishal’s husky tone and Divya’s cutting-edge-like voice are a very interesting and compatible combination. The second antara, however, sees Asees Kaur, Zee Music Company’s pet singer, singing a quite ordinary giddha stanza which doesn’t entertain as much as her “timb lak lak timb“s interspersed throughout the song, which are insane! Arrangements are typical BHANGRA arrangements, but so energetic, dynamic and booming, that they end up making you like the song. The dhadd and dhols are powerful and just awesome. Of course, the duo can’t make a song with straightforward typical arrangements, so they do add some techno sounds, which aren’t so effective. The lyrics by Mayur Puri are enjoyable, and fun even in their nonsense manner. A dance song which clearly shows how the makers underestimated Sachin-Jigar, and eventually extracted an ordinary dance track out of them!

 

5. Beat Pe Booty
Singers ~ Sachin Sanghvi, Jigar Saraiya, Vayu Shrivastav & Kanika Kapoor, Lyrics by ~ Vayu Shrivastav

A techno beat lures you into the next track, a dance track totally arranged on addictive techno and EDM beats. Of course, a track is needed to show off Tiger’s dance moves, and this seems to be the track made for that purpose. Sachin-Jigar are at their best with the composition, which is an insanely catchy one even in its simplicity and Yo-Yo-Honey-Singh-ishness (Yup, I invented that word!! I hope its meaning has stared back at you while you were staring at it!) Just like their own song ‘Johnny Johnny’ (Entertainment), the duo has made a very simple and monotonous composition, and they are apparently very confident, that it will be a superhit. And why shouldn’t they be? The song has everything you need for a catchy song, and it sounds PERFECT for its genre. The beats are insanely catchy (I don’t know how many times I’ve already said that, but they are). The composition can’t get out of your head and the vocals are so addictive! Talking about vocals, Sachin-Jigar along with Vayu sing the male parts good (with special care taken not to make it sound too perfect, either, which would spoil the fun!) But it is Kanika’s short part that won over my heart. The part when she says “nacha de, mainu nacha de, nacha de mainu” is so catchy! And after that, when she sings the song’s antara, her sweet and addictive voice makes magic there too. To think that she’s working with Sachin-Jigar for the first time!! The Afro feel of the song makes it even more catchier than ever. Lyricist Vayu writes words that are enjoyable as well as humorous, and they go well with the addictive and sultry nature of the song. All in all, the song is an enjoyable dance track, where the duo full-fledgedly shows their experimentation capability! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

6. Raj Karega Khalsa
Singers ~ Navraj Hans & Daler Mehndi, Lyrics by ~ Priya Saraiya

To end the album on a very dynamic note, the duo now brings into the album a kind of heavy metal song. The song is a spectacular one, with a splendid use of rock guitars and drums. Electrifying electric guitar strums start the song off, until a composition that anyone would usually expect Vishal Dadlani to sing, sets into pace, with someone unexpected, Navraj Hans, (Hans Raj Hans’ son) rendering it with an immense amount of energy, and sounding awesome in the bargain. He is accompanied by Daler Mehndi in some places, who is more of a backing singer; the main parts of the song go to Navraj. Daler excels though, with his aalaaps in the background, and his occasional one-or-two lines in the song. He has some lines in the first interlude which he aces with his wonderful high-pitched voice. The duo’s composition is really emotional and also motivational at the same time. The song has those positive vibes in it, that make you feel both proud and sentimental at the same time. The hookline, “jaako raakhe saaiyaan… ” is phenomenal! This is probably another rock song (which usually don’t really appeal to me) which has appealed to me this much after Sultan’s title track, but of course, this one is less commercially appealing. The choice of singers is very experimental as well. Using the two rustic voices, the duo has succeeded in bringing home the idea that desi-flavoured rock songs do sound good! 😀 Navraj with his powerful voice, and Daler paaji with a just as powerful voice complement each other well to infuse the required energy into this quite darkly-composed rock song. Arrangements by the duo are fab, and they take liberty to add in techno elements, orchestral strings and trumpets to make the song sound less monotonous with just guitars and drums! Priya’s lyrics are a wonderful ode to the Sikh community and yet, are a kind of motivation for the whole world. The duo manages to end the album on such a brilliant note, that you are stunned after you finish hearing it!! Fantabulous!! #5StarHotelSong!!


A Flying Jatt turns out to be an apt album for a comedy/action/masala superhero film as this. Sachin-Jigar have introduced high levels of variety into the songs and each song sounds different than the next. The songs are enjoyable and they have not only created buzz to bring people to the movie, but will also be played after the movie releases too! All six songs are miles apart from each other and that is the USP of the album. To sum up, I would say that the duo, who is back after a year, is still flying with the same amount of variety and experimentation with which they had left us!!

Hero is a Bollywood romantic action drama film, released on 11th September, 2015. It starred Sooraj Pancholi (Aditya Pancholi’s son) and Athiya Shetty (Suniel Shetty’s daughter) in the lead roles, and serving as the launch vehicle for both of them. The film also stars Aditya Pancholi and Sharad Kelkar in supporting roles. It was directed by Nikhil Advani, and produced by Salman Khan and Subhash Ghai. The film is a remake of the 1983 film of the same name, which had starred Jackie Shroff. It got mostly negative reviews from critics and the public. Anyways, the music of the film was composed by multiple composers, the list consisting of T-Series’ hot favourites Amaal Mallik and Meet Bros. Anjjan, along with Punjabi composer Jassi Katyal who had composed an avoidable song in ‘Dilliwaali Zaalim Girlfriend’ this year, and two songs by Sachin-Jigar. I was really looking forward to the album before it released and when it did, all I can say was that I had heard such a good album full of variety after a long time! Read on to find out my exact views about each song! 🙂


1. Main Hoon Hero Tera (Salman Khan Version) / Main Hoon Hero Tera (Armaan Malik Version) / Main Hoon Hero Tera (Sad Version)
Singers ~ Salman Khan / Armaan Malik / Armaan Malik, Music by ~ Amaal Mallik, Lyrics by ~ Kumaar

The title song of this film gets the first slot in the soundtrack, and the ever-promising Amaal Mallik gets the chance to compose it. As you already know, the song became a rage, and also the most famous song from ‘Hero’, but that’s just the public appeal side of it. What did I think of it? Well, don’t worry! I loved it just as much as everyone else did! 😀 Salman is roped in to sing the first version, and it being his production, he probably wanted it to be something special, and that’s why he sang, maybe. Well, however bad I found his voice in Himesh’s ‘Kick’ songs ‘Jumme Ki Raat’ and ‘Tu Hi Tu’, the reprises of which he sang, here his voice has been garnished with all the technicalities and leave it up to Amaal to make it sound as if he’s (almost) a professional! All the technical aspects have been dealt with properly, resulting in Salman sounding better than usual. The second version is by a professional Armaan, so naturally, as far as the vocals go, I prefer Armaan’s version over Salman’s. It is even on a higher pitch, and Armaan’s vocals are way more mellifluous than Salman’s! He even sings the tune a bit differently from Salman when the line “khud Se naaraaz hoon” plays. And the way he sings it, you just can’t suppress that Waaah! from escaping your mouth. When you read the song’s title, you would expect an typical Bollywood upbeat hero introductory song, with dhinchak beats or whatever, but when it plays, you realize that it is a very serene, calm and soothing melodious song. Amaal returns to that genre after doing some crazy stuff here and there like ‘Chaar Shanivaar’, ‘Saiyyan Superstar’ and whatnot, but I’m glad that he hasn’t lost his prowess in composing such soulful songs. The arrangements set up a just as tranquil environment and ensure that we have our attention wholly and solely on the song. The guitars and piano really help in doing that. In the hookline, splendid percussion joins in and gives the song a bit of an Indianized flavour. And those backing vocals going “Haaayeee” compel us to say the same thing when they play. The tune of the antara has been kept really simple, yet sweet. The strings interlude in the second interlude sounds great, and is actually the tune of the hookline of Amaal’s second song in the film, to come later on in the album. And then Kumaar’s lyrics are something that propel the song to heights, in the conversational form which they are written in. The sad version has Armaan behind the mic again, with a slight alteration in the lyrics, to make it sound sad. It goes “Kya main hoon hero tera?”. Duration has been shortened drastically for that version, and arrangements have been minimised as far as they could be, yet having a great impact in the song, especially the wonderful string orchestration, that builds up to the climax, only to calm down after some time, and again increase, finally ending the song on a orchestral low and with Armaan singing “Haan main hoon hero tera”. A soulful start to the album by Amaal Mallik, in three beautiful versions! Kudos to him for doing all the necessary processing to portray Salman’s voice in a melodious way! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

2. Yadaan Teriyaan (Version 1) / Yadaan Teriyaan (Version 2)
Singers ~ Rahat Fateh Ali Khan / Dev Negi & Shipra Goyal, Music by ~ Jassi Katyal, Lyrics by ~ Kumaar

The next song on the album also comes in two versions. One by Pakistani Sufi singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, and the other by relatively newbies, Dev Negi & Shipra Goyal. Jassi Katyal, who had composed some very atrocious ‘Mata ka jagrata’ called ‘Maa De Dandeya’ in ‘Dilliwaali Zaalim Girlfriend’, hadn’t really impressed me there, so I wasn’t expecting anything from him. And of course, I was expecting another upbeat and atrocious track. But then I saw Rahat’s name and that left me utterly confused. For all I knew, Rahat wouldn’t sign any atrociously sick party track. After hearing the song, I got to know that it was a typical Punjabi rock romantic song. It starts with the breathtaking sound of a sarangi, followed by the very rustic and lovely voice of Rahat. The twinkling sounds make it sound even more soothing. When the drums kick in, it starts sounding a bit too typical, and coupled with the electric guitars, even more so. The sarangi keeps making inputs throughout the song, and Rahat’s beautiful singing along with those arrangements sounds awesome. The composition does get a bit dull and boring at places, and the length doesn’t help much either. Flutes have also been used in a mind blowing way, something that I would never have expected from Jassi after that disgusting first impression of his. The lyrics are pure Punjabi lyrics, as soulful as the arrangements. The second version takes the form of a duet between Dev Negi and Shipra Goyal, and the arrangements are mainly the same, but the difference is that the switching from male to female voices in the duet version provides the necessary change, which in turn, makes this version a bit more enjoyable and interesting. Shipra’s voice is sweet and Dev also sounds beautiful with his deliberately husky voice. All that and more, made me like the duet version more than Rahat’s solo. An unexpectedly great composition from Jassi, just getting a bit too typical at times, but I would recommend the duet version, which is a #5StarHotelSong!!

 

3. Dance Ke Legend
Singers ~ Meet Brothers & Bhoomi Trivedi, Additional Vocals by ~ Sunaina Singh, Music by ~ Meet Bros. Anjjan, Lyrics by ~ Kumaar

As soon as it starts, you can’t help but wondering where you’ve heard that tune before. I was very, very sure I had heard it somewhere in some song, yet I couldn’t recall which song exactly! And I ended up getting trapped into the net of catchiness that the tune has set out for listeners like us. It is my common experience that almost everything Meet Bros. Anjjan offer to us, it always turns out to be catchy and something likable in terms of the tune. Here too, I observed the same! The song is the boys vs. girls kind of dance face-off we have grown up watching many times in Bollywood movies, but this time with a modern touch. The club beats and all is fine, but apart from that, the tune doesn’t really stand out as something extraordinary, making the sound seem a bit on the weaker side in that department. Had there been a better tune especially to the mukhda, the song would have excelled. That part does the job of making sure the listener has all attention on the song, and if that itself fails to catch the listener’s attention, then it’s an attempt that fails, no matter how good the stuff that follows is. The catchiest part has to be that hookline which really makes you behave as if you yourself are the ‘Dancing Floor Ke Legend’, since you dance along to the beats and tune. About the vocals, Meet Bros make a very smart move yet again by singing the song themselves instead of making Mika sing a song that seems tailor-made for him. They sound good, too, except that the two voices sound a bit annoying, always together, never solo. 😛 Bhoomi Trivedi, who sang really well in her first Bollywood song, ‘Ram Chahe Leela’ (Ram Leela), doesn’t get as much scope here, but does a satisfying job whatever she sings. Sunaina sounds really cheap, however when she sings “Show meeee… Votcha gott” like a typical German. 😂 Arrangements are pretty cool, especially the interludes, the first one being a kind of weird techno beats that really sounds awesome with great sound effects, and the second one with an out-and-out Latino-Brazilian touch with the brass instruments, and vocal interruptions. Kumaar’s lyrics are interesting, and provide the necessary entertainment which the tune other than the hookline fails to give. They are what make the song a memorable, for at least some time, girls vs. boys face-off. If only the composition had been better, this one would have been really good!! But since it isn’t, all there is to pay attention to, is mainly Kumaar’s entertaining lyrics!

 

4. Khoya Khoya
Singers ~ Mohit Chauhan & Priya Saraiya, Backing Vocals by ~ Tanishka Sanghvi & Arpita Chakroborty, Music by ~ Sachin-Jigar, Lyrics by ~ Niranjan Iyengar

Sachin-Jigar, fresh from the success of their awesome album ‘ABCD 2’, now jump into the album, to treat us to the first of their two songs in this album. When this one started, I couldn’t help but drown into the very dreamy, Gujarati/Rajasthani folk lines sung by Sachin’s daughter, Tanishka, who had spellbound us with ‘Vande Mataram’ (ABCD 2) earlier this year. The programming done with her voice serves as a hindrance to some, but some may find it to be beautifying her voice. As soon as Mohit starts, the striking resemblance to Sachin-Jigar’s own ‘Jeene De’ (Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya) can’t be ignored, and coincidentally both songs are sung by Mohit. It lasts for a very short time, and Priya with her beautifully programmed voice, comes and rescues the song from sounding too familiar, and the tune of her lines is awesome, as is the hookline that Mohit sings after them. Arpita does some wonderful classical vocals in the first interlude, sounding very sweet. Sachin-Jigar’s awesome arrangements, mostly traditional and sounding very North-Easternized thanks to the awesome dafli percussion, matkas, and serene flutes, meeting the modern guitars, are tremendously attractive. The second interlude has a tune that starts off sounding a lot like ‘Jaane Dil Mein Kabse Hai Tu’ (Mujhse Dosti Karoge); well, that’s the new ‘Hero’ signature tune. The antara continues with the beautiful composition, vocals and arrangements, and before you know it, the song is over. Though it is a bit above 5 minutes in duration, it has not a single boring moment, except that the hookline may sound a bit like ‘Rabba’ (Heropanti), but only if you are bent on finding faults in the song. If you forget about it, it sounds pretty normal. Niranjan Iyengar’s lyrics are romantic and sweet, cute at the same time, like a youth romantic song should sound. Everybody associated with this song has done a lot of hard work, and that’s why it sounds so good as a result! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

5. O Khuda
Singers ~ Amaal Mallik & Palak Muchhal, Music by ~ Amaal Mallik, Lyrics by ~ Kumaar

Amaal Mallik’s second song in the album starts off with a captivating harmonica, followed by wonderful flute, supported by Spanish guitars and sounds like castanets. And then guess who starts singing? I would’ve expected Armaan to sing, as he sings mostly for Amaal, but here, the composer himself steps behind the mic and beautifies everything with his just-as-soothing voice! His debut as a singer has bore fruits and I hope he sings even more in the days to come. About the composition, it is something that will just transport you to another land, possibly that is what they call the Land of Dreams in all those fairy tales we’ve read as little kids. But seriously, this song has some sort of magical power that just makes you speechless for the five minutes of its duration, and even when it’s over, you might be unable to shake yourself out of that trance. Palak has just one line in each antara, so it didn’t really matter to me how she sung; I liked it anyhow. The serene and free-flowing composition ensures that you are completely, totally immersed in it’s awesomeness and no matter how simple it may be, it has the power to grasp you. Arrangements are just as beautiful throughout the song, as they are in the prelude, with grand strings, Spanish guitars, flutes and some awesome theatrical percussion. Rock guitars also make a cameo and impress in their short performance too. In the second interlude, Amaal plays on the cello, the same ‘Hero’ signature tune which we heard in ‘Khoya Khoya’, and it is supported by a wondrous chorus, which also provides a great impact in other parts of the song as well. The hookline, in all its simplicity, is one of the most captivating hooks for a sad song in recent times. Kumaar’s lyrics clearly depict the sadness of two parted lovers, kept apart due to circumstances against them. The Spanish touch to an emotional romantic song, plus the awesome vocals and composition, and perfect lyrics, makes it a sureshot #5StarHotelSong!!!

 

6. Jab We Met
Singers ~ Rahul Pandey & Shalmali Kholgade, Backing Vocals by ~ Divya Kumar & Jigar Saraiya, Music by ~ Sachin-Jigar, Lyrics by ~ Niranjan Iyengar

To end the album, we have the dependable Sachin-Jigar coming back with their second song, which starts off resembling quite a lot their own ‘Haseena Tu Kameena Mein’ (Happy Ending), with that peppy sound and weird vocal sounds by Jigar. Nevertheless, it captivated me right from the first second. Rahul Pandey (also a singer on that song from ‘Happy Ending’) starts the song in a great way, with his slightly husky voice, sounding a lot like Nikhil D’Souza. Shalmali kicks in with a very bold and accentuated voice, sounding really great as well. And she sings the part of the song that leads up to the hookline, a very crazily created, catchy, zany, insane, wacky thing that will just make you gyrate your body to its tune. Divya and Jigar make sure that it reaches the heights of craziness and peppiness, still keeping it catchy and groovy. They start it after taking a little pause, making it all the more catchier! The awesome Punjabi dhols and popping sounds, and the Bhangra “haay! haay!” all provide the listener with things that would not leave him bored for even a second! In the interludes things get a bit emotional, with that ‘Hero’ tune playing on a flute, but they get lively once more with the onset of the antara. Shalmali’s English portion, sounds really professional and it is worth hearing again and again. In the second antara, she does some full-fledged emotional humming portion, which gives a small relief from the craziness, and makes you ready for the craziness to continue after that small part is over! The song being the longest in the album, it doesn’t seem so, only because of the many interesting elements that Sachin-Jigar have included in it, so that we have a good time hearing it. Niranjan’s lyrics are quite suitable for a romantic comedy movie, unlike this one, but maybe the situation in the movie called for it, so I can’t say much on that. However, if the situation is a light romantic one, I’m quite sure that these lyrics are both entertaining and relevant at the same time! An entertaining mix of Punjabi folk and modern sounds! Great and successful attempt by Sachin-Jigar in making this song so addictive! And special marks for Divya’s loud parts in the hookline! He shines! #5StarHotelSong!!


Hero is a multi-composer album that just proves wrong whatever assumptions I have about multi-composer albums in general! All the songs are catchy in some or the other way, suit the situations in the film, and none of them are such that you would skip them right away! With four composers, it rarely happens that they come together and blend together in a seamless manner, but it has happened here, with Nikhil Advani’s ‘Hero’. Though there are some small faults here and there in my opinion, they are small enough to be ignored, because all the songs together provide the variety that is required in a commercial action / romantic film’s album! An album that would emerge as a hero among multi-composer albums!!

Yes I’m late for my ‘ABCD 2’ Music Review, but today, 14th June, is Sachin Sanghvi of Sachin-Jigar’s birthday, so how about posting it as his birthday gift? 😀 So happy birthday, Sachin, and keep providing us with those infectious tunes with Jigar’s help!!

ABCD 2 is an upcoming Bollywood dance film, starring Varun Dhawan, Shraddha Kapoor and Prabhudheva in the lead roles, and Dharmesh Yelande, Raghav Juyal (Crockroaxz) and Lauren Gottlieb in supporting roles. The film has been directed by Remo D’Souza, and produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur. The film revolves around the struggle of choreographers Suresh (Varun Dhawan) and Vinnie (Shraddha Kapoor) from Nalasopara, a suburb in Mumbai, who go on to win the World Hip-Hop Dance Championship. The movie is a sequel to the 2013 film ‘ABCD – Any Body Can Dance’, with everything bigger and larger than before. A bigger starcast — what with some youth heartthrobs joining the bandwagon, a bigger budget — it’s shot in Las Vegas. A bigger everything, basically. So it is just natural for us to expect a bigger soundtrack too, in terms of both number of songs and quality and also appeal. The duo who has worked very hard in order to reach this stage in their career, where they’re giving us great album after year album, Sachin-Jigar, for whom the album of the first film was a turning point, return to compose for the album, along with 10 songs!! So I’m gonna dive right into this “expectedly” great album that I expect to be bigger than its prequel! 🙂 Let’s find out what we get!


1. Bezubaan Phir Se
Singers ~ Vishal Dadlani, Anushka Manchanda & Madhav Krishna, Rap by ~ Vishal Dadlani, Lyrics by ~ Mayur Puri

As it is clear from the title of the song, the makers of the film have decided to remake and represent the most famous song of the first film, the song that got the film a name and an identification of its own, ‘Bezubaan’, and since they’ve made it again (re-made) they add the words ‘Phir Se’ to the title, which don’t actually appear in the song. So, the song starts with that tune which has gotten itself to be recognized as the characteristic tune of ‘ABCD’, much like we had one for the ‘Dhoom’ franchise, the ‘Race’ films and even for ‘Ra.One’. This time, though, it doesn’t take shape with the help of rock guitars, but with the help of ancient Chinese-sounding flutes. And they haunt you, at the same time grabbing your attention and making you crave for more. Also, the original song was so great, that you can just expect something more great in this sequel to that song, which the starting assures you, that you will get. Where the first song was a soulful, soft number sung smoothly and calmly by Mohit Chauhan along with some electrifying English rap portions in the middle and a scintillating hookline by Priya Panchal, this version of it is dynamic all the way! When you have a vocal powerhouse such as Vishal Dadlani onboard, what else would you expect? And Vishal very efficiently carries the song on his two shoulders. Infusing the right amount of energy and enjoyability in the song as is required, and also as much as is possible, he zips through the song like a lightning bolt, spreading the zing as he goes. This time, there is very little English rap, but mostly, a catchy Hindi rap, written and sung by Vishal too, very effectively. Anushka Manchanda has a very brief portion, but she soothes us down in that small portion, before and after which Vishal spreads his enthusiasm again. The disappointing part in the vocals, though, is Madhav Krishna with the hookline, which doesn’t sound properly in place after Vishal’s virally infectious parts. After Vishal builds up the climax, it ends quite abruptly at the hookline, leaving you thinking that something is missing. Sachin-Jigar have wonderfully composed the new parts surrounding the hookline, and those parts are very catchy, but again, the hookline itself seems out-of-place somewhat. Their arrangements do make up for it however. New and cool techno sounds, with those electric guitars, really make your day whenever you hear the song, and may even serve as your daily dose of energy! That tabla in Anushka’s part is hard to make out, but when you do hear it, you’ll get goosebumps — it’s that awesome! Again, the percussion part at the end, this time starting off with African beats, seems very flat in front of what we had got to hear in the first song. And Taufiq Qureshi is there, in this song too! Was expecting a lot more from him but this is satisfactory! If only this wasn’t a remake, I wouldn’t be comparing at all! Mayur Puri’s lyrics are brilliant like they always are, and the inspirational factor in them hasn’t gone anywhere between the first song and this one! 🙂 A bit disappointing when compared to the original, but definitely an enjoyable start to the album! I know it must be challenging to remake one of your own songs, so no problem!!

 

2. Sun Saathiya
Singers ~ Priya Saraiya & Divya Kumar, Lyrics by ~ Priya Saraiya

The next song is another song that we are familiar with, thanks to the first film. However, the makers hadn’t included it in the OST, but had kept it in the film. That was kind of unreasonable, because it was one of the best songs in the film. After that, the makers got a lot of requests from the audience to release the song as a single, and after two years, the audience’s wish comes true in the form of this song. We get a full, proper song with a mukhda and antara, of which only the mukhda was included in the first film. The duo and Priya Panchal Saraiya have developed the song further, resulting in a song to cherish. The ever-reliable piano intro (it always works, no matter how many times you use it) absorbs you into the song right from the moment it starts. Then Priya, with her smooth-flowing vocals, transports us to dreamland, literally, and we forget all the dimensions of time and space, our ears only open to Sachin-Jigar’s melodious composition, and a wonderful combination of Priya and Divya’s voices. Divya carries put his parts wonderfully, not stumbling anywhere while singing that fast-paced sargam, and he shocks us with his classically perfect rendition. His rustic vocals provide a great contrast to Priya’s more fine vocals, and it sounds brilliant when they have been put together. Priya’s lyrics are great as well, romantic and having an easily-memorizable quality to them. But what really stands out are the duo’s arrangements, a fantastic amalgamation of classical instruments like the tablas, and Western instruments like the piano, violins and even a small drum part somewhere! The violin comes in the interlude, and soothes you down a lot, especially because of Divya’s sargam, wonderfully blended with it. Overall, a nice gift to the audience from Sachin-Jigar, Priya and Divya, wherein we had to wait for two years, but the end result is totally worth it!! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

3. Chunar
Singer ~ Arijit Singh, Lyrics by ~ Mayur Puri

As soon as the next song starts, you are reminded of the haunting, but soothing music that you get to hear in a typical Sanjay Leela Bhansali album. But this time, it is relatively younger composers, Sachin-Jigar trying their hand at this genre. And they succeed, everything in the song as perfect as possible. First of all, I would like to praise Arijit, who, after singing many songs of the same type and feel, finally sings a song which nobody can call a ‘typical Arijit Singh song’. His nuances are brilliant, and ultimately, it is his textured voice that makes you fall for the track. Everything else falls in place later on because, it just so happens that the first time you hear the track, you notice nothing but Arijit. In subsequent listens, you start taking in more and more from the track and that’s why, you end up loving it even more after many listens. Sachin-Jigar’s melody, as I said, is perfectly haunting and very, very touching, suitable for Mayur’s even more touching lyrics. While ‘Meri Maa’ (Yaariyan) was the best “Ode-To-Mother” song of last year, this year’s has definitely got to be ‘Chunar’, what with the really heart-touching lyrics by Mayur, and the suitably emotional-izing tune to it. If you think this is too many awesome things in one song, wait till you hear about the arrangements, because I’m yet to tell you about them! It starts off with wonderful, haunting sound of a string instrument (turns out it’s a harp, as Sachin said here when I asked him), which just draws you in, after which you cannot escape until the song is over. It sounds like it’s a classical instrument and that’s why I was really surprised to know it’s a harp!! It’s been given a great classical effect! Kudos to the duo for that! It plays constantly in the background for the whole mukhda, after which comes a stunning interlude, something so cool that you won’t believe your ears! Techno sounds coupled with an electric-sounding sitar, wow!! And those vocals! It makes for a wonderful listen! The beats that accompany Arijit in the parts where the harp is silent, are awesome too! Techno beats in a semi-classical composition, sounds awesome! Heart-touching, emotional, and beautifully written, sung and composed!!! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

4. Happy Birthday
Singers ~ Sachin Sanghvi, Jigar Saraiya, Varun Dhawan & D. Soldierz, Lyrics by ~ Mayur Puri, D. Soldierz

In the next song, Sachin-Jigar and Mayur Puri take us one year back, when ‘Johnny Johnny’ had become a rage in the nation. The same insanity, quirkiness, catchiness and infectious nature of that song, returns in this song. While it starts with ignorable dialogues that go away quickly, the parts that follow will have you grooving before you know it! The fact that none of the singers, except Varun Dhawan in some places, are recognizable due to the over-the-top programming done to the voices, can easily be ignored too, because the tune of what they’re singing, is something that is too hard to resist. The composers themselves get behind the mic, and program their own voices so weirdly, that the weirdness starts to sound genius! The various voices they obtained by programming their voices, are really funny and apt for such an energetic and crazy, wacky song. D. Soldierz, a Delhi based Punjabi music duo, has been well utilized in the song, and the line they have sung is what got me to like this song so much, it’s just composed so well by Sachin-Jigar! The beats in the song do resemble those of ‘Johnny Johnny’ a lot, but no complaints! They’re actually really infectious beats! The female voice going “Awww” so many times in the song, sounds so great!! Varun’s rap has been programmed too much as well, and so it sounds very weird when he says some lines after his rap, in his real voice! Mayur’s lyrics here, are quirky and well-suited to the requirements of the song. D. Soldierz have also written a few lines, I guess the ones they sang. 😂😂 I know, I don’t get any prize for guessing that! The duration of the song has been kept really short at just three minutes, which is just right for such a song. An overdose might make all the listeners crazy! (I mean that positively 😂) By now Sachin-Jigar have become experts at giving the public something that they will 100000% love!! This song joins the ranks of ‘Khoon Choos Le’, ‘Johnny Johnny’, ‘Paaji Tussi Such A Pussy Cat’ and ‘G Phaad Ke’! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

5. If You Hold My Hand
Singer ~ Benny Dayal, Lyrics by ~ Mayur Puri

With each song of the album showing us a different genre, this one comes to the tried-and-tested breezy romance formula, which the ranks of Vishal-Shekhar, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Pritam have done many, many times in the past. This song too, falls in the category of songs which have a mix of English and Hindi lyrics, but actually make sense, and make you want to snap your fingers along to the catchy hookline. Sachin-Jigar go into typical Vishal-Shekhar’s ‘Anjaana Anjaani’, ‘I Hate Luv Storys’ etc, mode for this one, with the familiar-sounding “Oh-oh-ohhh” chorus, and that peppy tune of the lines “You Calling Out For Me, You Got Me On My Knees”, plus that unmistakably Vishal-Shekhar-ish hookline. Benny the rockstar carries it out with ease, managing both the English and Hindi parts effortlessly. He is back after quite some time, all the way after ‘Bang Bang’, and this is his first Hindi song this year to release! There are female backing vocals to support him, which sound suspiciously enough, like Shefali Alvares. And some more in another place sounding like Priya Saraiya. 😅 Arrangements are nice and relaxing, with all the techno sounds placed in a great, calming way. Mayur’s lyrics are good, and thank God they make sense, because some songs mixing Hindi and English make no sense at all. Yes, there are some place in the beginning where the words don’t rhyme in the line that follows, but the tune and Benny’s vocals covers that part up. Did Sachin-Jigar compose this or Vishal-Shekhar!? 😄 An awesome composition which kind of seems like Sachin-Jigar are paying a tribute to Vishal-Shekhar! Awesome, catchy composition, lyrics that are easy to grasp, and a wonderful and engaging performance by Benny! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

6. Hey Ganaraya
Singer ~ Divya Kumar, Lyrics by ~ Mayur Puri

We were treated with a semi-classical ‘Chunar’ earlier in the album, only to be surprised with a full-fledged classical piece later on, in the form of ‘Hey Ganaraya’. The harp is used once again, in a very traditionally Indian way, to start off the song. It is a song overflowing with divinity and devotion, which would surely arouse the faith and bhakti in you. In the first film,,we had two power-packed, dynamic and dhamaakedaar Lord Ganesha songs ‘Shambhu Sutaya’ and ‘Sadda Dil Vi Tu’, but in this film, there is a sole Lord Ganesha song, which is focused in its path, and never diverting from its path. A serious devotional song was definitely not expected, but now that we have got it, I cannot do anything but praise it. Divya Kumar, who was on backing vocals in ‘Shambhu Sutaya’ (identifiable, but uncredited) gets to carry this one solely on his shoulders. Once more, he gets to showcase his versatility and also his effortlessness in performing the sargam. Additional voices supporting him, have done stupendous work, wonderful tabla bols, and an uptempo piece that makes up an interlude, in a pretty Garba-esque style. Sachin-Jigar’s composition is full of the required feel of devotion — that haunting sound, which ironically drives all the fear out of your mind! Their composition is most probably based on a raaga, and makes sure not to steer away from the classical genre even once. Arrangements are unbelievable, as well. The traditional instruments like tablas, dhols and nagada, have been equipped very, very well. The conclusion to the song, has to be paid very close attention to, especially if you are a classical music lover. The tabla solo will just blow you away! Mayur Puri’s lyrics have that ‘pray-and-call-out-to-God-when-in-dilemma’ feel in them, and I think all of us can relate to them in some way or the other. Many of Lord Ganesha’s names have been used, and sound beautiful the way they have been incorporated into the song! A full-fledged classical delight, nothing less!! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

7. Happy Hour
Singer ~ Mika Singh, Lyrics by ~ Mayur Puri

After the devotional classical song, a mandatory ‘drunkard’ song, which is necessary in all of today’s albums, jumps unto the album. But this one is a bit different from all those irritating songs. This one has a catchy and addictive starting to it, made up of techno sounds and a tune that wouldn’t really make you turn away and skip the song in disgust. Instead, it makes you eager to listen on, to see what is in store for you in the rest of the song. Well, I know not many have liked this song (in fact, I’m probably the only one I know who loves it…) but I don’t know what’s the problem in it. First of all, the slow-paced the which acts as slow poison, gives it the infectious feeling it should have, making it join the ranks of the classic ‘Intehaan Ho Gayi Intezaar Ki’ in terms of tempo, and the composition too seems a bit inspired from that song. A depressed soul, drinking the night away, blurting out his emotions, but no moments which will have you scrunch your face in disgust, no disturbing moments at all. Half of this, thanks to the incredibly humourous lyrics by Mayur Puri, which have been rendered just as comically by Mika. As I said, the composition takes time to grow, and I’m not sure if it will grow or not, either! It has many abrupt twists and turns and tempo changes, which might seem weird at first, but blend in, in no time. But it did on me, so I hope that at least someone else is on my side regarding this song! 😀 Sachin-Jigar’s arrangements are interesting as well, with those weird yet creative sounds starting off the song, and the beats on which the whole song plays. In the hookline, those techno pinball-like sounds are so catchy! And the interlude, with the unexpected dhols, is awesome too, played at a higher tempo. Divya Kumar, identifiable in the backing vocals, does good too. The conclusion to this song is also extraordinary, with the tempo increase and the high-energy arrangements of techno sounds. Something that will grow on you with time; something really enjoyable and catchy! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

8. Naach Meri Jaan
Singers ~ Benny Dayal, Shalmali Kholgade, Siddharth Basrur & Rimi Nique, Lyrics by ~ Mayur Puri & Rimi Nique

Here comes another genre, another feel and another sound to the album. This time Sachin-Jigar bring in a perfect Latino-flavoured dance track, with just the right arrangements that help us groove to the beats. The opening techno sounds are just enough to grab your attention, mostly because of their attractive sound and also the catchy tune! After that, Brazilian trumpets and percussion kick in, making the Latino ambience more prominent. Benny Dayal gets his second song in the album, and he starts off with a bang, singing an effective intro to the song. Though Shalmali is part of the song, she has been surprisingly kept in the background, with the main female vocals belonging to Rimi Nique,  of ‘India’s Raw Star’ and ‘The Voice Thailand’ fame, making a powerful and perfect Bollywood singing debut, with an energetic dance number. Her smooth and sugary vocals provide a great contrast between the upbeatness of the song and themselves. She could very well become the new club sensation after Shefali Alvares and Shalmali Kholgade, in the upcoming months. Out of Siddharth Basrur and Shalmali in the background, Shalmali can be heard and identified in her parts, since her voice doesn’t really match with Rimi’s, but I couldn’t identify Siddharth anywhere, because I’ve never really got hold of what he sounds like from his earlier songs. Rimi’s English solo towards the end, is awesome, with those Brazilian beats supporting her. The song makes you feel as if you are in a Carnival in Brazil, itself! Mayur and Rimi work together in writing the song, with Mayur most probably behind the Hindi lyrics and Rimi in charge of the English ones. The lyrics are entertaining, yet nothing out of the box. Though everything falls right into its place, Sachin-Jigar’s composition and arrangements are what makes this a must-listen! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

9. Tattoo
Singer ~ Shefali Alvares, Lyrics by ~ Mayur Puri

The next song starts very, very dynamically and extremely addictively, with the freaky vocals going “Ayy-ay-ay-ay-ay-ay-ayy”, sounding a lot like they’ve been sung by Hard Kaur, followed by Shefali’s rhythmic lines that build up the suspense up until the very attractive hookline arrives. The uniqueness in Shefali’s voice works in favour of the song once again after her three songs in ‘Bombay Velvet’, and gives it a Western feel, although the lyrics, composition and beats try to keep it as desi as possible. Her rendition is really one of the best in her career in this song, unlike those songs where she gets to be following the footsteps of the male singer, and sing stuff we hardly notice all around the male singer’s lines. Here, she gets the whole song to herself, and doesn’t miss the opportunity to make it as worthwhile as she could. Sachin-Jigar’s addictive tune has to be praised too, of course for this, as it is something, the type of which we haven’t heard for quite some time in Bollywood, a masala-meets-urban type of dance track. Especially the hookline, they have composed really well, and it is something that you can’t just remove from your mind once you’ve heard it! Their beats, too are groovy and foot-tapping, making sure you enjoy yourself all throughout the duration of the song. The various experimentations that have been tried out, also do not fail to impress, and sound really cool. The interludes are mostly made of these weird sounds, that really attract you towards the song. The tune of the line “Ishq insane hai you know” is really catchy as well. Mayur Puri has also written pretty fitting lyrics to the genre of the song, perfectly mixing youth lingo with the desi words. Sensational!! The beats will make you awestruck!! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

10. Vande Mataram
Singers ~ Daler Mehndi, Tanishka Sanghvi, Badshah & Divya Kumar, Lyrics by ~ Mayur Puri & Badshah

The grand finale to the album starts in a very grand manner, with the youngest singer in the album starting it off, Tanishka Sanghvi, Sachin’s daughter, singing in perfect rhythm! We heard her in Sachin-Jigar’s ‘Coke Studio @ MTV Season 4’ episode in the song ‘Laadki’, and here she debuts in Bollywood, with the perfect song, a patriotic anthem. Daler Mehndi, rarely heard nowadays in Bollywood, backs her up with even more grand lines in his deep and impactful voice, also singing the hookline, a new take on the national song of India, ‘Vande Mataram’, which Sachin-Jigar have woven with genuine and true love for the country, as is evident in the result. Recent so-called patriotic songs in Bollywood like ‘India Waale’ (Happy New Year) haven’t managed to achieve as much emotional connect as this one does. While that one seemed like fake patriotism, this one actually awakens the patriot in you, and gives you a proud feeling to be an Indian. Another great feat that the duo has achieved with this song, is incorporating what might be the best rap ever in Bollywood in recent days, performed by Badshah. Of course, the no-nonsense and meaningful quality of the rap helps the rap to sound so good. It is full-on desh-bhakt rap written and performed wonderfully by Badshah. (Yup, that same guy who did ‘Saturday Saturday’ and ‘Abhi Toh Party Shuru Hui Hai’ raps.) Isn’t it unbelievable?! The unexpected ‘Chunar’ incorporation into the song also comes as a pleasant surprise, with Divya Kumar getting to do the honours along with Daler paaji. As it concludes with all the more grandeur, you can’t help but let the tears that were, till now, held back, escape. The “Sujalam Suphalam” chants help to conclude the song, with Divya Kumar and Daler Mehndi performing perfect, heart-touching aalaaps, and finally, Tanishka almost ending it all with her rendition of “Shubhra jyotsnaam phulkit yaamini…” before Divya and Dealer come back yet again to provide the perfect, energetic finale to the seven-minute long track. You must’ve noticed I’ve nowhere mentioned about the duration, and that’s just because I wanted to get you acquainted with how worthy the song us of your full-fledged attention for each second of these seven minutes. Sachin-Jigar’s arrangements are mostly dhols and other traditional instruments like manjeeras and a wonderful shehnaai / nadaswaram solo during Badshah’s awesome rap. The energy of the arrangements is so high, that you won’t even notice each of the instruments as an individual, but will remember them as a team. Mayur’s lyrics are full of patriotism, not the fake kind, but this time, true and genuine affection for the homeland. Tanishka with her innocence, Daler with his dynamics, Divya with his heart-toucfing performance, and Badshah with one for the best raps in Bollywood’s history together with Sachin-Jigar’s GENIUS patriotic composition, make this song something to cherish!! A seven-minute-long patriotic treat!! VANDE MATARAM!! #5StarHotelSong!!


As per the huge expectations, ABCD 2 indeed surpasses the sequel in all aspects, musically, and how!! The contrast that each track brings about, is indescribable, and Sachin-Jigar’s successful experimentations in each of them is yet another applaudable thing. They prove their versatility yet again, with an album that contains everything for everyone, from the masses to the classes! Though ‘Bezubaan Phir Se’ does disappoint when compared to the original ‘Bezubaan’, everything else is just spot-on when it comes to the departments of music, composition, lyrics and vocals. The mass appeal of each of the tracks, is also very high! Sachin-Jigar at the peak of innovation and experimentation!! ABCD 2 – Artistic, Brilliant, Creative and Deadly, Too!!

Happy Ending is an upcoming Bollywood comedy film, which is being promoted as ‘a comedy about romantic comedies’. The film has been directed by director duo Raj Nidimoru & Krishna D.K. and produced by Saif Ali Khan, Dinesh Vijan and Sunil Lulla. The film stars Saif Ali Khan, Ileana D’Cruz, Kalki Koechlin and Govinda in lead roles, with Saif in a double role. (The second one is like Pritam!! :D) Last year Raj & DK came up with a Zom-Com ‘Go Goa Gone’, which had awesome experimental music by Sachin-Jigar. So, it was natural, that they would stick to their favorites (worked with them in ‘Shor In The City’ as well) and this film also has music by the talented young duo. 🙂 This year wasn’t as great for the duo as was last year. The single from ‘Finding Fanny’ remains their best of the year so far. Let’s see if this changes with this album! 😀


1. Paaji Tussi Such A Pussy Cat

The rhythmic and catchy humming with which the first song starts, instantly makes you leave all work and concentrate on the song. The dynamic hums are one of a kind and I’ve never heard something of that kind in Bollywood music. Amitabh Bhattacharya opens the song in his nasal voice, which does provide loads of comic effect. The rhythmic humming continues in the background, and that’s what makes the song sound like a genius composition. The hookline is one of the catchiest ones of the year. The way Amitabh says the ‘caaaaaaaat’ and ‘braaaaaaat’ etc, is just too funny and also very nicely placed. The sound effects by Sachin-Jigar are, as usual, top-class. Small things like the female chorus singing chikachikchik attract our attention and at that time, we can’t help but appreciate the geniusness and talent of Sachin-Jigar! The last antara is at a different, slower pace, and yet it doesn’t create any disturbance whatsoever. The whistles which the duo has added are awesome! One more genius part of the song is the vocals of Jigar in the background, constantly singing something or the other, like ‘Oh tussi’ after each of Amitabh’s lines. Divya Kumar makes an entry towards the end, and with his folk-sy vocals, gives the song a dynamic ending with a big bang. His soprano bit at the end is really worth hearing! Jigar interrupts (I actually liked his interruptions, however!) in between Divya’s parts too, singing some gibberish that sounds awesome and also that ‘paaji paaji paaji’ bit. And also, do not move to the next song without hearing the cute meow! at the end! The lyrics by Amitabh are quite funny, too! Take this line, “bad luck ne diya tohfa, khol ke ho gaya khush” or “aake apne hi chakravyuh mein, beta Abhimanyu Tu phansa”. There are plenty more funny lines! You must have heard this one already, but still, I’ll tell you that it is one of the catchiest songs of the year! A must-listen and another successful innovative and unusual attempt by Sachin-Jigar! #5StarHotelSong!

 

2. G Phaad Ke
Singers ~ Divya Kumar & Shefali Alvares, Lyrics by ~ Ashish Pandit

A techno sound starts the next song, followed by a catchy rap by an uncredited guy. This is another song, which has a catchy hookline, and everything around the hookline is also equally catchy. Divya Kumar was an unusual choice for this club song, but he has fit in well with the club feel, and Sachin-Jigar have used his voice very well, to suit the composition. The arrangements mostly consist of techno elements, but the techno elements have also been used so awesomely, which makes this track stand out amongst other regular club songs by unknown people nowadays. Shefali, who seems to only sing in these kind of songs strictly, does well in her part. She also sings in places around Divya’s voice throughout the song. The aaha’s in the song, which I don’t know whether she has sung or not, have been brilliantly placed and sound great. The “hillll Ke naacho” part is mindblowing! The lyrics by Ashish Pandit are purely for comedic effect, and they do their work. Unless you see the spelling of the song, you would not get the humour. That’s pretty smart (and also evil 😂). The small percussion beats which Sachin-Jigar have added in the song are very catchy. It has “CATCHY” written all over it! 3. Jaise Mera Tu
Singers ~ Arijit Singh & Priya Panchal, Lyrics by ~ Priya Panchal

This song is the Hindi remake of Sachin-Jigar’s Telugu song ‘Meher Meher’ from ‘D For Dopidi’ which was a Raj & Dk production. Cute guitar riffs start off the song, and then Priya’s beautiful voice takes over to sing a fascinating mukhda. It is awesome how she changes her voice to suit the crazy songs like ‘Johnny Johnny’ or ‘Maa Ka Phone’ to the songs like ‘Gulabi’ or this one. This song also marks the first song of Arijit Singh for Sachin-Jigar. I was always hoping for a beautiful romantic song by Arijit composed by them. The composition is very refreshing, just like ‘Khushamdeed’ from ‘Go Goa Gone’. It is one that can lift your spirits, a breezy and light, cute melody. The harmony between Arijit and Priya is awesome, and it is accentuated by the magical harmonium bits in between. The antara is not too different from the mukhda, yet gives a relaxing feeling. The lyrics by Priya are very beautiful and romantic. When Arijit enters the song, he brings in with him a whole new beautiful and magical ambience. The hookline is so catchy, even though it sounds heard before. When Arijit sings, ‘aise tera main’, the percussion behind him is awesome. Such small details Sachin-Jigar have given attention to, and that is why they have been successful in making this song so beautiful and attractive. One of the better-composed romantic songs of the season! Nothing innovative, but very refreshing! And the breathtaking harmonium! #5StarHotelSong!

 

4. Khamma Ghani
Singers ~ Papon, Smita Jain & Vidhi Mehta, Lyrics by ~ Amitabh Bhattacharya

Time for some emotional stuff! The next song is a kind of sad song, which confuses you and makes you think whether it is a sad song, or a happy romantic one! Guitars kick off this track too, and pave the way for Papon’s Mohit-esque vocals. Papon’s rendition is enchanting, and he succeeds to put the right emotions in the song. Amitabh has introduced yet another unusual term in Bollywood music — ‘Khamma Ghani’ which is a Rajasthani expression for greeting, meaning either ‘welcome’ or ‘sorry’. (In the title of my post, I’ve used the former meaning, and so has Amitabh in the song) The hookline reminds you of one of Sachin-Jigar’s best and most famous works, ‘Saibo’ from ‘Shor In The City’. The female chorus of Smita Jain and Vidhi Mehta sound beautiful as a complement to Papon. The lyrics have been written in a very touching way, and that emotion has been emphasized by the extremely brilliant composition by Sachin-Jigar. The lyrics of the antara are especially very nice and touching. Plus, the words saza yafta have been used so incredibly geniusly by Amitabh! “Hai dil mera saza yafta!” What a comparison! The drums in the hookline have been utilized in a great way. The guitar interlude is worth hearing and the tune of the antara which follows is just spellbinding! Towards the end a Rajasthani folk-osh voice can be heard, which I doubt is of Papon, but whoever sang it has done it so well, that it is a pity he’s not credited. If it is Papon, however, I just have to give him a standing ovation! Very touching, emotional composition and lyrics, and a heartrending rendition by Papon and the female chorus! #5StarHotelSong!

 

5. Mileya Mileya
Singers ~ Rekha Bhardwaj, Jigar Saraiya & Priya Andrews, Lyrics by ~ Priya Panchal

Sometimes a song makes you so speechless, that you cannot classify it into any specific category, romantic, sad etc. It becomes a special song close to your heart. This is exactly what this song has done to me. It is an upbeat yet very melodious and emotional composition, which has equally touching lyrics by Priya Panchal. The three singers, Jigar, newcomer Priya Andrews, and the wonderful Rekha Bhardwaj, have harmonized with each other very well, and create a beautiful atmosphere. Priya’s soft vocals, Rekha’s rustic voice and Jigar’s highly autotuned yet pleasant voice sound awesome together. Though Rekha seems like an unusual choice, but she’s the one who puts all the class into the song. The arrangements are brilliant as well. Special mention has to be made of the exceptional saxophone played by Shirish Malhotra both in the interlude and the conclusion. The distribution of lines has been done perfectly and the lines which Rekha has got, are the best in the song! Priya’s beautiful lyrics come to life with the three singers’ exceptional rendition. All the lines of the song have been geniusly written and I can tell that Priya has evolved a lot as a lyricist since her ‘Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya’ and ‘Jayantabhai Ki Luv Story’ days. The hookline has been written very very beautifully. Beautiful vocals, arrangements, composition and the best lyrics! #5StarHotelSong!

 

6. Haseena Tu Kameena Mein
Singers ~ Rahul Pandey, Shruti Pathak & Siddharth Basrur, Lyrics by ~ Amitabh Bhattacharya

The ending song to this great album is just as great and catchy as the other upbeat songs of the album. Rahul Pandey debuts with this song, and he has sung great, slightly resembling Ash King or Nikhil D’Souza in places. The catchy and quirky arrangements definitely grasp your attention. It is slightly resemblant of ‘Dil Duffer’ from ‘Gori Tere Pyaar Mein’, and ‘Daaru Desi’ from ‘Cocktail’. The tune is very refreshing and makes for a very fun listen. The sounds in the background are probably produced by beatboxing. The snaps, whistles and other attraction add to the catchiness. It seems like Sachin-Jigar have the recipe for catchy hit songs kept somewhere in a secret cupboard to which they refer each time they get a brief for an upbeat song! 😂 They are experts at this stuff! The lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya are very amusing as well. The antaras have an awesome tune, and the ‘don’t you know don’t you know’ is just awesome! Shruti and Rahul have awesome chemistry and sound well singing with each other. Siddharth has been kept mostly in the background. A catchy song which makes for a very fun listen! Has been made very geniusly! Refreshing! #5StarHotelSong!


Happy Ending is an album which… Well, which redefines a rom-com album! Sachin-Jigar have provided exceptional music to this romantic comedy, and Raj & DK, Saif Ali Khan and Dinesh Vijan have done a great job in choosing the songs! Three upbeat and three melodious songs makes the album well-balanced and one that would stay with you for a very long time! It is one of the best albums of the year! That’s why I would like to invite all true music lovers to enjoy this album by saying, Khamma Ghani, aao aur yeh album suno!
