Raabta is an upcoming Bollywood romantic reincarnation drama, starring Kriti Sanon, Sushant Singh Rajput, Jim Sarbh, Varun Sharma and Rajkummar Rao. The film is the directorial debut of already many times successful producer, Dinesh Vijan. The film is produced by him along with Homi Adajania, Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar. The film’s official gist is this: “When a human being dies, they lose 21 grams from the body. This, they say, is the weight of the soul. The journey of a soul transcends over space and time… beyond the realms of this earth. This film tells the story of two seemingly ordinary individuals, going about their lives until their paths cross and they realize that they belong with one another. Unaware of a connection that was forged several hundred years ago, Shiv and Saira are inexplicably drawn to each other, and it takes them on a hysterical rollercoaster of love, intrigue, entertainment and life (twice over!). When two souls unite, they become one.” 😴 Hopefully, it is executed well. The music of the film is by JAM8, and a guest composition by Meet Bros. also features on the album. I guess we all know the controver(sies) surrounding the music of the film, due to that one guest song, so there is no point reiterating them. We all know who the actual composer of the songs credited to JAM8 is, but he wishes that his name shouldn’t be associated with ‘Raabta’ because of his policy to only compose for solo-composer albums, so there’s no point in naming him. I just hope the music company learns its lessons and reconsiders it’s actions!! On this grave (😄) note, let’s start with the music review of ‘Raabta’. 


1. Ik Vaari Aa / Ik Vaari Aa (Jubin Version)

The album starts off with a very happy-go-lucky, romantic club number, with a lilting yet groovy sound. The composition has the stamp of Pritam all over it, and the way it flows is in the trademark way that almost all Pritam songs flow. The song’s melody starts off right with the hook, which is a wonderfully composed piece, that efficiently works in pulling you into the song. The antara following it, too, is very happy-sounding and charming, but it is the last stanza, which I call the ‘conclusion’ because it just doesn’t seem like an antara, is what steals the thunder. That part has been composed in a very entrancing manner, and is a major throwback to the corresponding ‘conclusion’ part in Pritam’s ‘Tu Chahiye’ (Bajrangi Bhaijaan). The high-pitched bridge line that leads to the hookline, is just amazing. The arrangements are quite similar to Pritam’s previous club song arrangements, with the upbeat EDM portions, and that wonderful “chipmunk” that we heard in ‘The Breakup Song’ (Ae Dil Hai Mushkil) last year. There is a Sajid-Wajid touch in the arrangements somewhere (‘Mukhtasar’ from ‘Teri Meri Kahaani’ and ‘Raat Bhar’ from ‘Heropanti’). But on a whole, the EDM has a very international touch to it, and it sounds like JAM8 is trying to recreate Pritam’s club arrangements in an international style. But because I always something out-of-this-world in a Pritam club song, and since this song is by his company, this song was quite underwhelming in that department. The pumped-up portions of the arrangements sometimes clash with Arijit’s super-high-pitch, and that sounds quite odd at times. That brings us to Arijit’s vocals. Definitely not the best he’s performed, but he still manages to carry the song in a quite charismatic way, and doesn’t drive you to sleep like he did in ‘Half Girlfriend’. But of course, the parts where he goes super-high-pitch, made me uncomfortable, and that doesn’t happen with every other singer. In the second version of the song which takes a sans EDM route, and is more reliant on guitars to propel it, everything that sounded wrong in the arrangements is set right. A slight rock guitar backdrop makes the song lighter than it was in the original version, and definitely more enjoyable. The company also replaces the fun chipmunk-like EDM with a nice vocal chorus, which gives off ‘Tum Mile’ vibes somehow,and immediatel removes all Sajid-Wajid vibes. As for the vocals, they have improved due to Jubin’s smooth treatment of the composition, taking care not to sound like he is straining his voice too much, and handling the high notes much better than Arijit did. And the small nuance he takes while singing “yaara” and all of its rhyming words, is just magnificent! In the conclusion stanza, Jubin gets to sing an entirely differently-tuned line that fits in perfectly and sounds as good as its counterpart in the original version. Oh, and it is a welcome change, considering that we have been hearing the original for over a month now. So this reprise is really one of the best reprises to have come out, ever! Amitabh Bhattacharya’s lyrics are great, and suitable for a fun romantic number. I don’t know what I missed in the first version, but something is surely missing. To cover it up though, the Reprise takes a nice romantic twist!

Rating: 3.5/5 for Arijit’s Version, 4.5/5 for Jubin’s Version

 

2. Raabta (Title Track)

The recreation craze continues as ‘Raabta’ (Agent Vinod) is recreated in this movie, which takes its name from that song. But how fortunate are we, that the man who made the original song, is the one who is remaking it (through his company, that is). The track, originally a romantic number, and probably the first time Arijit Singh actually came into large notice, though he had sung other songs before that, has now been remade into a dance track for the film. But this dance track is as far from a regular Bollywoodish dance track as you can imagine. It has a very quite and soothing vibe to it, and a very unexpected twist in the form of a nice interruption wherein JAM8 introduces to Bollywood, a new genre of music called ‘Tropical House’, which sounds like some techno Caribbean music. Anyway, the new composition that the group has made for the remake, is great. The mukhda, sung by newbie (in Bollywood) Nikhita Gandhi, is charming and scintillating, with its romantic vibes really reaching you. The way they have joined it to the hookline of the original song too, is quite cool. The time the song goes downhill is when, after the nice and refreshing Tropical interlude, Arijit comes back to reprise his portion, the antara from the original song, a part I felt didn’t quite merge with this song. Yes, I know that if the hookline adapted well into this song, every other part should too, but I just didn’t feel the antara this time. When it went back to the new composition, I started grooving to the beats again. So it was like a sudden disconnection from the song. But then, JAM8 makes up for it in the fantabulous (which is a very small word to describe it!) ‘conclusion’ part of the song, which has a lilting and entrancing tune. Especially the oddly-but-fantastically placed line, “Jo bhi hai manzoor hai!”, is a wonderful bridge from the ‘Conclusion’ to the hookline. And the continuous EDM beats, really infuse life into the song. The composers also add wonderful piano notes occasionally, and the guitars that start off the song are so vibrant! So I guess I have already spoken about the arrangements as much as I could. Moving on to the vocals, Nikhita Gandhi, another singer from the Rahman camp of singers, joins Pritam’s camp for this one (quite similar a story to that of the other well known ‘Gandhi’ singer, Jonita — not sisters!) And she totally owns her debut. Yes, Arijit gets the major part in the song, but because she opens it so smashingly, the listeners get hooked and keep waiting for her voice to return. Sadly, it comes back only for the hooklines. Arijit is his usual self, trying to be charming , succeeding and also acing that aforementioned ‘conclusion’ portion. Irshad Kamil writes the new lyrics for this song, wrapping Amitabh Bhattacharya’s already awesome lyrics with an awesomeness of his own. A song that takes itself miles away from its original, neither better nor worse, but just at par, in a different genre. Barring the copy-paste antara, the song is quite good.

3. Sadda Move

In the next song, JAM8 cuts out the whole international feel that was looming over the album all this time, to replace it with a street hip-hop number in Punjabi style. And I must say, how disappointed I was, hearing this song. The composer takes a very weird route with this song. There isn’t much by way of composition, but whatever is, sounds like very often recycled Punjabi lines used innumerable times. Like the antaras. And the mukhda just starts off so abruptly, it takes time to adjust to it. Actually, a rap starts the song, and it is quite obnoxious. Raftaar. That “Sadda Move Move” line by Raftaar is so irritating. The hookline of the song, too, isn’t too impressive. Arrangements are what lift the song up for me. That flute loop that plays every now and then is just insane — a glimpse of the trademark Pritam-ish insanity that JAM8 has so far, cruelly kept out of this album. The digital beats are quite groovy, but they don’t really provide anything new and innovative, which is what I would like to hear when I listen to a Punjabi street hip-hop number. The tumbi and “burrrhhhaaaa“s are the typical Punjabi people clichés, thrust into the song just to stereotype Punjabi music. But I must say, the dhols are quite engaging. The vocals are above average — Diljit sounds good but not excellent; probably the composition is barring me from liking his rendition too. On the other hand, his co-singer, Pradeep Singh Sran, who made it big in Bollywood with his song ‘Cutiepie’ (Ae Dil Hai Mushkil), brings back his Labh Janjua-ish voice and steals the listeners’ hearts. Raftaar is strictly annoying, and his rap is least enjoyable. Overall the song has a strong Meet Bros-ish vibe. Legends Amitabh Bhattacharya & Irshad Kamil come together to write something that Kumaar or Shabbir Ahmed would’ve written by themselves, if they had been approached. Quite stereotypical, and ‘enjoyable’ would be an exaggeration. A clear dip in the level of the album.

4. Lambiyaan Si Judaiyaan

After three relatively happy-sounding songs, it was necessary, I guess, for the composers to bring in a touch of pathos in the album. So they bring a sad song sung by Arijit, which I feel is loosely modelled on Pritam’s ‘Channa Mereya’ (Ae Dil Hai Mushkil), because of the slight Sufi touch to it. The composition, I have to say, is something that disappointed me highly. I just couldn’t find anything great in it. The song is trying so hard to be emotional, but manages to ve not even one bit emotional! And that almost never happens with Pritam songs. The first two stanzas are composed on the same tune, and that is a major drawback, because it is what makes the song sound very, very monotonous. The very first line of the song made me think, “What?” because the music that starts off the song is very promising! After that it becomes a crying fest, something so overdramatic I wouldn’t have expected it to be a song from a big banner films as ‘Raabta’. The hookline is so unidimensional, it hardly managed to touch my heart as an emotional song should. The composition ends with another “conclusion” stanza, and this time, that stanza is clearly trying to emulate the “conclusion” of ‘Channa Mereya’ (Ae Dil Hai Mushkil) with its composition, arrangements and Arijit’s singing style. The arrangements of the song are also very heard-before, and stale arrangements. The Dholak rhythm has gotten so old and typical, I wish no composer uses it in sad songs anymore! The music that starts the song though, the violin one, is very good! And that is what made me believe the rest of the song too, would follow suit. Arijit sings this one with utmost lack of expression, almost like a robot. It seems he spent all his energy in ‘Ik Vaari Aa’. The Faridi brothers pitch in for a good but again, clichéd, Sufi interlude, that only makes the song sound more artificial. Amitabh Bhattacharya’s lyrics are good, but not amazing. A sad song that makes me sad that it had to be in this film.

5. Main Tera Boyfriend

Na Na Na Na!

Guest composers, Meet Bros, step into the album now, for their remake of the popular track of J-Star’s, ‘Na Na Na Na’. Now there’s a huge controversy regarding who stole the song from whom and blah blah blah. But besides all that, I think the whole nation is raving about the song and how catchy it is. The original was definitely one of the catchiest pop songs of that year and even now, and Meet Bros try to keep its catchiness intact. They have built a typical Bollywoodish composition around it, which sounds least like a Meet Bros. composition, and more like a Pritam one. How coincidental because JAM8’s ‘Sadda Movie’s sounded like a Meet Bros song. The Mukhda starts the song off on a very nice tune, and expectations rise right away. It is the antara that could’ve been better, and repeating each Antara twice was not needed; it just made the song that much longer. The hook… Do I need to speak about it! 😀 The arrangements too, are very similar to Pritam’s, complete with the chipmunk noises here too. The club sounds are great as well, and make the song enjoyable at all points. The vocals are energetic, with Arijit replenishing all his drained energy, and giving a very spunky rendition of the song. Is it just me, or does anyone else also think he sounds amazing in upbeat numbers as well!? Neha cannot match up to her co-singer’s level and performs a bit disappointingly this time. Meet Bros. also come and sing an interlude that would have sounded better had it stayed out of the album. 😥 And after that, there’s a lady’s voice that says “I Wanna be your boyfriend.” 😮 Kumaar’s lyrics are the usual type of lyrics that go into such songs. A song that I didn’t expect much from, since it was a remake, turns out to be quite foot-tapping!

6. Darasal

Finally, to finish off the album, JAM8 bring an Atif Aslam romantic melody, something that is quite quintessential in recent T-Series albums. As soon as the song started, it reminded me of ‘Jeena Jeena’ (Badlapur) because of the similar pattern of the guitar piece. The composition is actually very sweet, and it is also slow-paced like ‘Jeena Jeena’, and would suit well for a waltzy arrangement too. But JAM8 choose to keep things minimal and grace the song with nothing more than a nice and sweet guitar riff, and occasional amazing strings. The tune, though slow-paced, grows on you instantly. It is instantly likeable, unlike all the other JAM8 songs in the album, which I took some time to get accustomed to (Except the Jubin ‘Ik Vaari Aa’). I loved the way how they repeated the last line of every antara twice, and the last line of the song thrice. The antara itself is very calm and soothing, and gives a very breezy feel to the song. In the Mukhda, the line where he repeats the words twice, is just outstanding! (“Teri Ada, Ada Pe Marta…” etc.) This is actually what is expected from an ideal romantic comedy. Sadly, it comes in at the end of this album! 😪 Atif’s vocals are some of the best I’ve heard from him in quite a while; he sings the song with a totally different charm than he sung his other songs of late. It draws the picture of the typical boy-next-door image in Bollywood rom-coms. Kamil’s lyrics are just beautiful! Some of them are just salute-worthy, like the one I’ve featured up there at the beginning of this song’s review. Finally, a cute romantic song that befits the film’s romantic aspects.

Raabta is an album I wouldn’t have expected (read, I would have expected much more) from a romantic film like this. Most of the songs are prohibited to be the usual fun-and-frolic that we associate with Pritam, for no specific reason. In fact, the dance song from guests Meet Bros is better than the dance song from JAM8 itself. JAM8 sticks to a very conventional route, save the title track, and only manages to deliver well in two songs in that conventional barrier (‘Darasal’ and ‘Ik Vaari Aa’). But I can’t take away from the album that, as an entire album, it is full of variety and sounds good. It is just lacking on the innovative quotient, and likeability quotient, and hence, the repeat value. ‘Raabta’ means ‘connection’, but there is a slight breach in this Raabta!

Naam Shabana is a Bollywood thriller, starring Taapsee Pannu in the titular role, and Manoj Bajpayee, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Elli Avram and Taher Shabbir in supporting roles. The film has been directed by Shivam Nair, whose ‘Bhaag Johnny’ flopped in 2015. The film has been produced by Neeraj Pandey and Shital Bhatia. It is a spin-off to the 2015 super-hit film ‘Baby’, and shows the journey of Taapsee Pannu’s character Shabana from ‘Baby’, before she was roped in to be a part of the mission. The movie is definitely awaited, because of it being the first of its kind; Bollywood has been free of any spin-offs as such, and it is just wonderful that the first Bollywood spin-off is that of such a wonderful thriller. Anyway, let’s go over to the music, because we have a little more time to wait for the movie. We all remember that ‘Baby’ had been touted to be a songless film. Nevertheless, three songs had been included in its album — technically two, because one of the songs had a male and female version. Meet Bros. Anjjan had composed one promotional track, while M.M. Kreem, had composed the two-version track in question. The soundtrack was like an accessory to the film, and not something to cherish in your playlist for a long, long time. This movie seems to be different, in that it has four original tracks, with one having two versions, thus making it five songs. Rochak Kohli, who of late, just composed single additional songs that released after the albums of ‘M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story’ and ‘Wazir’ released, comes back with a substantial chunk of an album after a long time. He last composed three songs out of the five-track ‘Welcome 2 Karachi’ (which were quite ignorable) and before that, three out of ten in ‘Hawaizaada’ (which I still listen to!) So I am not quite sure what he can give in this album, where he has three out of five songs. The other two songs are two versions of the same song, composed by Meet Bros, without Anjjan. Hopefully, they don’t give something too-hard-to-grasp like ‘Baby’s ‘Beparwah’. So let’s see what kind of music this album to a much-awaited thriller, holds in hand!


1. Rozana

Reh jaati hai kuchh kami, jitna bhi dekhun tujhe,
Rozana main, sochun yahi,
Ki jee loongi main besaans bhi,
Aise hi tu mujhe, milta rahe agar, rozana, rozana!”

Rochak decided to start the album off with a mellow, soothing song that would be enough to transport us to dreamland. The first song in the album is a romantic song that has a very beautiful composition; Rochak gets everything right in that he composes this one with the perfect Bollywood ideals of ‘romance’. Each and every note hits your heart and hits hard. The mukhda gives a nice headstart to the song, and the hookline is one which doesn’t care much about imposing itself on you but grows on you like slow poison just as I like it. The antaras hold all the magic of the song; the very powerfully lilting tune of the antaras just leaves you spellbound. The arrangements are quite minimal, but Rochak gives an impressive strings backdrop for most of the song, especially the strings in the interlude are very impressive. Guitars and piano soothe your senses like nothing else can. And also, Rochak has employed a kind of Marching rhythm to the antara. I don’t know why that’s there, but it doesn’t hamper the song in any way. The arrangements provide for a nice nighttime lullabyish listen. And the vocals are by none other than the melody queen, Shreya Ghoshal. She handles each word with utmost care, and the whispery way in which she sings the song proves yet again how wonderful she is as a singer. Unnecessary bouts of loudness can never be found when she is behind the mic. The lyrics by Manoj Muntashir are mind blowing, especially the paragraph I’ve showcased above! A MINDBLOWING start to the album, and it will definitely consolidate Rochak’s career in Bollywood.

2. Zinda

Haare hain kayi dafa toh kya, aaj bhi, hum ladna toh bhoole nahin,
Aaj bhi dil baaghi hai, bas yehi kaafi hai,
Zinda hoon abhi, baaki hoon abhi,
Meri har saans mein thodi si zindagi hai abhi!”

After the lulling romantic song, Rochak throws in a motivational kind of song next. This time, the composition is a bit weak. It sounds great in the first listen, but later on I found that it is quite typical and offers nothing new. The mukhda starts off the song on a slow pace, which only speeds up when the hookline arrives: the only portion of the song that remains with you after the song ends. Wonderfully composed on pensive sounding high notes, that part will definitely hook you on to the song and assure that you don’t leave it halfway. The antara that follows is also quite sombre, and doesn’t leave an impact on you, unless you hear it many times. On a whole, the song’s tune has nothing much to lap up. The arrangements also fail to offer anything different or innovative. The tune is already so laidback, but the arrangements refuse to make it more interesting, staying very minimal until, again, the hookline comes. Strings and guitars can be heard, but nothing stands out very boldly. Sunidhi Chauhan provides to the song, everything that the tune and arrangements could not. Her energy, though diffused in the song, manages to make the song repeat-listenable, even if only once or twice. Lately, she seems to have gotten stereotyped to these kind of songs. The lyrics by Muntashir, too, are good in their purpose of being motivational. A motivational song that fails to motivate a lot, but is functional to an extent.

3. Zubi Zubi

Next up we have Rochak’s final song for the album, and it happens to be an upbeat club number. This one is a remake, of Bappi Lahiri-composed ‘Zooby Zooby’ (Dance Dance), and it is quite a decent remake too, at that. The composition, though faltering at the beginning, turns out to be quite catchy. The mukhda is what I have a problem with — it seems forced and a bit childish. But right from the first time the hookline is sung, till the end of the song, it is an enjoyable track! The great thing is that, like it used to happen before, only the hookline of the original song has been taken, while the rest has been composed afresh. The antara is a nice continuation of the sensuous dance song, but then that line from the mukhda, “humko hai jaan se bhi pyaari aashiqmizajiyaan“, comes back to irritate. The arrangements are fantastic discoesque arrangements, recreating the Bappi Lahiri era in today’s style. Rochak has added groovy beats, and that amazing programming effect he has added to his own voice when he sings the hookline, keeps me waiting for his parts to come! It makes him sound like an awesome robot. 😀 Sukriti also, has sung well, except the mukhda. (Again!) She sounded a lot like a fake Shefali Alvares there, and I found it quite irritating, as I would have if Shefali herself had sung it. The rest of the song, she shines. Kumaar reworks around Anjaan’s original hookline, and pens down aptly enjoyable lyrics. A good remake, spoiled by a mediocre first stanza.

4. Baby Besharam / Dil Hua Besharam

The next song is yet another club song, this one by Meet Bros. The composition sticks quite close to Bollywood’s conventions of composing a ‘catchy’ club song. Right from the beginning Meet Bros “try” to get us caught on to the composition, which, unfortunately, is very staid. The mukhda is bad, and the hookline follows suit. The antara doesn’t provide much respite in this respect either. The arrangements are typical club beats, and it sounds like it should’ve released a year or two ago. Meet Bros have added this weird synthesiser tune, which sounds like the song is part of a comedy movie, an adult comedy to be precise. I wonder if this song was actually composed for some other movie before, and then moved over to ‘Naam Shabana’ Because it couldn’t find a place anywhere else. The vocals are what differentiate one version of the song from the other. It actually had released first in Jasmine’s voice, and that one is outright banal, sounding like it is trying to imitate ‘Yaar Na Miley’ (Kick). Aditi Singh Sharma, though not eligible to win a Best Singer prize or anything for her rendition, provides respite MERELY IN COMPARISON TO Jasmine Sandlas. At least her voice is more club-environment-friendly. Yes, she does spoil some lines with her unnecessarily stylish accent. Oh yeah, and she knows how to pronounce the “Baby” as “Bebe” (which you need to practise if you ever want to make it big in Bollywood as a club singer!), as opposed to Jasmine singing “Baby” as “Bebi”. The way they sing “beyyyyyysharam” is quite torturous. I guess it was first going to be included in ‘Besharam’ as the title track (that would explain the comedic arrangements), until Ishq Bector & Shree D saved us by stepping in. Kumaar’s lyrics feature lyrical masterpieces like “Rafaa dafaa sufi bandon ko karke nasha vasha karlo“, and “Thoda sa bigadne mein bolo na kya harz hai?“. *Slow claps*

Naam Shabana is a decent album, but not great. Its predecessor had two songs, so it was okay that only one worked. This has four songs, out of which only one works perfectly, the others are decent, and one is bad. For a thriller, the album is apt, with a romantic song, a motivational song, and two situational club songs. However, it will have less of a connect with the audiences. Rochak has done a commendable job though! The only good thing I might remember about this album years later is that it has both Shreya and Sunidhi, modern stalwarts of the Bollywood music industry, lending their voices to the songs.

Jolly LL.B 2 is an upcoming comedy courtroom drama starring Akshay Kumar, Annu Kapoor, Saurabh Shukla and Huma Qureshi in prominent roles. The film has been directed by Subhash Kapoor, who earlier directed ‘Phas Gaye Re Obama’, ‘Jolly LLB’ and ‘Guddu Rangeela’, and produced by Fox Star Studios. The film revolves around the story of a small-time lawyer Jagdishwar Mishra a.k.a. Jolly, who earns a living by fighting small cases. In his desires to become a full-fledged lawyer though, Jolly ends up committing a mistake that could just as well destroy his career as a lawyer. The film deals with how Jolly gets himself out of this predicament. The film is the sequel to 2013 sleeper hit ‘Jolly LLB’. While the earlier film had a music album which can hardly be counted as one of Krsna’s best works, or even good works, as it was as middling a fare as your everyday T-Series multicomposer album, the sequel has an album which is just that — your everyday T-Series multicomposer album. And as it almost always is, there is one song composed by one team of composers. Manj Musik, who has the full support of Akshay Kumar now, what with him composing for Akshay in ‘Gabbar is Back’ and ‘Singh is Bliing’ in 2015, gets the first song. Helping him is Nilesh Patel, who has been credited as “Co-Composer”! Expectations are not too high but not zero either, as he has given good songs in the past, but just messed up a couple of times, thus earning my anger. Next up is Chirrantan Bhatt, another composer whose Bollywood career is strongly backed by Akshay. He gave hits for Akshay in both ‘Boss’ (2013) and in ‘Gabbar is Back’ (2015). This time too, he is back to perhaps give yet another path breaking romantic song. Meet Bros. feature as the third composers on board, and their association with Akshay has started long ago in 2012 when they scored the beautiful ‘Mere Nishaan’ in ‘OMG – Oh My God!’ After that, they went on to score for Akshay in so many films like ‘Boss’ (2013), ‘Baby’ (2015) and ‘Singh is Bliing’ (2015). But that was when Anjjan too was a part of the team. After the split with Anjjan, this is Meet Bros’ first song for Akshay; hopefully, it is just as good. And lastly is one-album old, Vishal Khurana who debuted last February with the stellar album to ‘Neerja’. Thankful that he has got another project finally, (after like ages!) I hope he takes good advantage of it and gives a great song. So let’s see what this multicomposer assortment has in store for us! Because Akshay Kumar and multicomposer have this very nice relationship which more often than always, impresses me! (Take any of the albums mentioned above for example!)


1. Go Pagal

(I didn’t find any lyrics worth mentioning here!)

The album starts with the song I was least excited to hear — a Holi song titled ‘Go Pagal’. Okay, so Manj Musik has given some pretty good songs in the past, but only sticking to one kind of songs — fast, update rap songs (with the exception of the awesome ‘Aaja Mahi’ from ‘Singh Is Bliing’) As such, all his songs sound almost the same and you can really predict what’s going to come next in each song. This song too falls into the same category, but it goes a bit too overboard with the craziness. The composition is a typical Manj composition, though there are some nice folksy lines in the middle, (‘Bheegi bheegi lage lovely lovely…‘) which I suspect are composed by the co-composer Nilesh Patel. Anyway, the composition is quite all round the place and it is kind of hard to grasp on to. And that hookline is just yuck! I was fine till it played. It was such an abrupt end to the flow of the song, that it spoiled all the fun, or whatever fun was there. Also, it is quite similar in sructure to ‘Let’s Nacho’ (Kapoor & Sons) where they ‘say’ the hookline, not sing it, and then some weird tune plays in some very annoyingly high digitized pitch. And what’s worse, the person who says ‘Go Pagal’ here (That’d be Raftaar, I guess) sounds like he’s burping it. It sounds eww. In some places, the composition resembles ‘Tamanche Pe Disco’ (Bullett Raja). The arrangements are very mediocre, though that nice rapid dholak beat is something for which I would listen to the song over and over again, despite everything. And that chipmunk voice that says ‘Goli Re’ in the mukhda is just so cute! Every other thing regarding arrangements is strictly banal. It sounds like it has been thrown out of 2013 and should’ve been in ‘Jolly LLB’, but it forecasted that Akshay Kumar would star in the sequel, which is why it is here for us to get troubled by it. The vocals sound like robots have done it. Raftaar tries to sing charmingly, but how can he? He has to carry the entire song on his shoulders, and though he does quite well, it just sounds very monotonous. And Nindy Kaur in her part initially sounds as if she’s so shy, she can’t sing at all. (She’s trying to sound naughty, but it sounds shy…) Her voice sounds as robotic as ever. The lyrics (Raftaar and Manj) are as banal as possible. A Holi song has never been so trashily written in the history of Bollywood, I guess. Okay, maybe ‘Ang Se Ang Lagana’ from ‘Darr’ is an exception, but in recent times they’ve all been very well-written and fun. Though the makers might think this is fun too, it isn’t. A mediocre start to the album, and a disappointment from Manj and his team.

2. Bawara Mann

Chirrantan Bhatt, another composer that Akshay Kumar seems to be backing these days, enters the soundtrack, with his song. Usually, the composer impresses us with nice Bhatt-ish melodies. This time though, he follows the path of one of his earlier songs, ‘Coffee Peetey Peetey’ from ‘Gabbar Is Back’, and presents a breezy, feel-good melody that could not have sounded better. Previously, ‘Coffee Peetey Peetey’ was my favourite song by him, but now I have to say, that it is this one. The composition is, as I said before, very breezy and happy-go-lucky. And I just love it when such songs come out. The mukhda starts off right away with the hookline, a wonderful tune with a light touch to it. It’s as if Chirrantan is saying, “Want to cut down on fat in your musical diet? Well then, listen to this song, with 80% less musical fat than other songs out there!” The antara goes into a nice and soothing low scale, as opposed to the cute high pitch of the mukhda. The composition kind of reminded me of Pritam’s ‘I’m Sorry Par Tumse Pyaar Ho Gaya’ (Shaadi Ke Side/Effects), in that it is a toned down version of the peppy and breezy composition of that song. Arrangements are fantastic, with the ukulele (Shomu Seal) and guitars (Shomu Seal & Sanjoy Das) really winning your heart by the end of the song, and giving the song its quirkiness. Piano notes occasionally bring the sobriety to the song, while wonderrrrrrful harmonicas throughout the song provide that heavenly touch, accompanied by a wonderful vocal choir. The vocals by both singers are fabulous as well. Jubin, who has already sung so many songs this year, ranging from mediocre to beautiful, has emerged as the superstar of the beginning of the year with another fantabulous rendition from his side. Neeti, on the other hand, only strengthens her charming image by singing the second antara, with as much expertise as possible. Her characteristic feathery voice elevates her portions to other levels. Junaid Wasi, who returns to writing lyrics after like four-and-a-half years (His last was in Chirrantan Bhatt’s album ‘1920: Evil Returns’) writes a splendid poetry-like piece. Hindustani classical terminology meets modern romance in his writing, and it actually proves to be a nice and pleasant fusion. This is where the album starts, in my opinion!

3. Jolly Good Fellow

What made me freak out even before starting the song was that the folk song ‘He’s A Jolly Good Fellow’ had been recreated! I mean if Bollywood can’t handle its own classics’ recreations, how will a British song be recreated well enough!! But then, the first note of the song played and all my worst doubts disappeared into thin air. The song starts with this uber-cool, smooth flute portion, played to the tune of the nursery rhyme! And from that moment on, you are hooked completely! The Meet Bros. have done an appreciable job in successfully recreating a Western song to suit the Indian music standards. A suitable “Chinta Ta Chita Chita” (Rowdy Rathore) based rhythm makes its way into the song and surprisingly provides an apt background beat for the English folk song. Of course, the duo has added their own composition for the mukhda and antara, and I can’t really say it is bad! The mukhda starts off the song well, showcasing the main character of the movie as a very sacrosanct person, and I must say, the tune is quite sanctimonious-sounding too. I mean, in Janmashtami, you will hear such tunes everywhere in India. The sound effects included by the duo are probably the most enjoyable I’ve heard in recent times. Yes, the sound of the song is very generic and heard-before. But I don’t really have any qualms in liking something that is likeable even though it has been heard before. The arrangements are booming and fun, with the aforementioned beats really infusing a lot of fun into the song. Different instruments, and especially the flute that plays occasionally, sound awesome. Whistles and the like make for nice “roadside attractions”. The vocals are good too,and the Meet Brothers sound at ease rendering the spunky song. The female backing vocalists provide nice entertainment with their cute inputs. Meanwhile the two rappers, (Shabbir Ahmed in Hindi and Earl Edgar in English) do not fare as well, with their commonplace rap. Shabbir, rapping to his own words, sounds confused. You can barely hear what he is saying. That being said, his lyrics are quite decent! It is a perfect character introduction song, and the incorporation of the “Jolly Good Fellow” phrase followed by “jai Kanhaiya laal ki, bolte chalo” is so interesting! It is a theme song that is quite entertaining. Might be irritating for some, but interesting for most!

4. O Re Rangreza (Qawaali)

{I do not know why T-Series is always so adamant on writing “Qawaali” in the title of their songs! I think this is like the third time they’ve done this, and once, the song wasn’t even a Qawwali! I think we are quite competent to make out whether a song is a Qawwali or not, and if they want to continue this, I advise them to write in brackets stuff like “Romantic Song” or “Dumb Party Song” too, why only Qawwali?}

Bollywood hasn’t churned out a single satisfying Qawwali as far as I can remember, after Tanishk Bagchi’s splendid rock-qawwali ‘Allah Hu Allah’s (Sarbjit). Now here comes another proper Qawwali, by which I mean a Qawwali without any unnecessary Bollywood elements. The young and talented composer Vishal Khurana (‘Neerja’ fame) has been roped in to compose this Qawwali, and going by the innovative work he did in ‘Neerja’, I was expecting a very, very impressive Qawwali. Unfortunately, I got quite a regular and ordinary one. The composition is good, and suits the situation (one of those situations that often arrive in Bollywood films where the protagonist has lost all hopes and has to leave it all up to God, and then a Qawwali or Bhajan plays) but goes awfully slow. It is not something that one would find themselves listening to too much. Because of these drawbacks, I expect the song to gain momentum only after the movie released, but the prospects of that are less too, because Qawwali isn’t a genre that finds many takers in today’s world. (Though I get fascinated and mesmerized by a good one, when it comes!) Anyway, that’s that in the composition. The “Mushkil kusha o re noor-e-khuda…” hook, though, is very beautifully composed, as are the antaras, slow speed notwithstanding. The arrangements follow a mesmerizing Roopak taal, with the tablas sounding spectacular, as does the Bulbultarang or Indian banjo. Vocals, thankfully, help the listener ignore the slow pace of the song, as Sukhwinder pours  his entire soul into the rendition, sounding very soulful in the process. Supported ably by the Mustafa brothers, he provides a nice, relaxing ambience with his voice. However, the main reason I would listen to this song again, even before the movie releases, is the spectacular writing by Junaid Wasi. He impressed in the romantic song and now impresses in a spiritual one as well. The line I’ve “showcased” is just one of the portions out of the many splendid lines in the song. A déjà-vu inducing Qawwali as far as the composition and arrangements go, but vocals and lyrics make this one an exemplary piece of art.

Jolly LL.B 2 turns out to be quite a good album, if you judge it as a multicomposer album, which it is. Akshay Kumar almost always impresses whenever his music albums are scored by multiple composers. (Glaring exception being ‘Housefull 3′) The six individuals (counting Nilesh Patel and two Meet Brothers) come together to make an album that is definitely not perfect, but functional as a feel-good (or shall I say feel-jolly?) album, that will propagate the buzz of the movie before release. Yes, Manj and Meet Brothers’ songs could’ve been better, but they are still partially enjoyable. And I must say, this album is better than the album by Krsna to the first instalment of the franchise! A jolly jolly album! 😛

Wajah Tum Ho is an upcoming Bollywood crime thriller, starring Sana Khan, Gurmeet Choudhary, Rajniesh Duggal and Sharman Joshi in lead roles. The film is directed by Vishal Pandya and produced by Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar. Those two names are enough to tell us that it’s a T-Series production, and that we may expect some good songs, and some remakes. Sure enough, three out of the four songs on the album are remakes of old songs. Only Mithoon composes an original song, in three versions, while Abhijit Vaghani, Meet Bros, and Gourov-Roshin recreate old songs, Abhijit’s appearing in two versions. Abhijit is debuting as a composer in Bollywood, having been on the programming panel before, and going by his pop single, a remake of ‘Pyaar Manga Hai’ that released earlier this year, the sing might be good enough. The Meet Brothers are back after long as a duo, and I’m expecting a lot from their remake as well. Gourov-Roshin are just done giving me a shock with their atrocious techno music in ‘Force 2’, and they had remade a song there too, so I don’t expect much from this remake of theirs. Without further ado, let’s see how good the remakes, and Mithoon’s original song, is!


1. Wajah Tum Ho / Wajah Tum Ho (Male) / Wajah Tum Ho (Lounge)

Mithoon starts off this ambitious album, that has set out to remake many classics, but he starts off the album on an original note — just in case the remakes, are safely protected deep inside the album by a five-minute long buffer period that consists of Mithoon’s song, which happens to be the title song of the movie. The song is a new, interesting take on this title. The title is actually taken from the song ‘Wajah Tum Ho’ (Hate Story 3) from Vishal Pandya’s last film. While that song, composed by newcomer (and already-goner) Baman, was composed on typical Bhattish lines, this one has a nice old-world-charm mixed with the omnipresent Mithoon touch. The composition is more of a soft and soothing one, in contrast to the sensual and intense one of that song. Of course there’s no reason to compare, so I should just stop. Back to this song, the mukhda brings it to a nice beginning, but it is in the hookline where it receives its shocks and jerks, and starts slowing down. Repetition of the song’s title so many times in a seemingly ultra-slow pace, isn’t your everyday idea of a soothing romantic song. The antara gets better because of more high notes, which kind of lessen the laziness in the composition. The song is included in three versions in the album — One being a duet between Altamash Faridi and Tulsi Kumar, while the other two are solely sung by Altamash. The duet version works because of the male and female voices, and I must admit, Tulsi sounds good in the song, if not great. Just like Amaal Mallik does, Mithoon has used her voice nicely here. Altamash sounds a bit sleepy in places but the high notes in the antaras let us know that he is very much awake. In the male version, though, it gets tedious to hear the song in a complete male voice. The lounge version is a different case altogether. Though it has been sung by Altamash solo, the arrangements in the lounge version are BEAUTIFULLLL! While Mithoon graces the other two versions with the same arrangements consisting of soothing and breezy acoustic guitars (Kalyan Baruah), he has something more mystical and magical in store for you in the lounge version. Of course, a nice lounge touch has been added to the song, and many things happen all of a sudden, which suddenly transforms that lazy composition into one sounding utterly beautiful! The arrangements consist of some beautiful guitar work (Joell Mukherji), while the flutes (Madhu Mukherjee) are brilliant. Nice percussions with the drums make the song sound complete. The sarod (also by Madhu Mukherjee) and tablas are what give the song more of a lounge touch, though! It is this version that finally brings out the beauty of the composition and makes it succeed. Sadly, I don’t think it will be promoted much! 😦 About the lyrics, I would rather say that they are very sappy and icky, instead of praising them by saying they’re nice romantic lyrics. 😛 Manoj Muntashir writes words like “Kahan pe tu ho shuru, kahan main khatam, pata na chale“. I’m like, “Are you a blob of clay? Are you mud? Are you sand? Or are you the European and Asian parts of Russia? Please tell me so I can solve that problem for you so that you don’t have to sing it in songs!” The lyrics are rather a nice get-to-know-yourself course. A middling start to the album, but the lounge version of this track is surely a #5StarHotelSong!!

Aah! Here are the “awaited” (by T-Series to release and torture us with) remakes, finally! Reading the name of the song, you won’t know that this song is a remake of “Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas” (Blackmail) because T-Series has cunningly named it in such a manner that you’ll never guess it. The music producer/arranger Abhijit Vaghani, who has earlier composed in Bollywood for ‘Chaarfutiya Chhokare’ with his partner Sameer, gets to remake this evergreen Kishore Kumar classic. Well, he hasn’t really composed anything new in the song, and Kalyanji-Anandji’s original composition has been kept intact (What a relief, that at least that has been done!) This song also comes in two versions, one that has the never-too-popular Arijit rendering it, and another tagged as “Unplugged”, which has his close successor, Armaan Malik singing it. They both are accompanied by the T-Series behnaa, Tulsi Kumar. The first version of the song really has everything going against it, in terms of the vocals, what with Arijit sounding like a terrible robot, while Tulsi gets her voice tripled and quadrupled. The original recorded voices will never reach us; we get the adulterated version of their voices, and the result is quite revolting! At least Tulsi sounds better than usual in her tripled voice, but Arijit sounds horrendous with his robotic voice, that is way too thin for it too be actually believed to be his. Neuman Pinto has a rap portion in the middle of this version, and it is just disgusting how such a rap can be shoved into a classic song like this! As if that wasn’t enough, Abhijit tries to make the song sound more sensuous (and fails too) by slowing the pace down by some kilometers per second. 😦 Armaan, in his version, gives us the pleasure of listening to a good, unadulterated rendition of the timeless classic, which we sadly couldn’t hear in Arijit’s voice. Thankfully, Armaan’s version is enough to make up for it, at least in terms of vocals. While in the first version, Arijit and Tulsi took turns singing one line each or something, this song is mostly Armaan’s, and Tulsi only sings the second antara, quite blandly, at that. Shamita Bhatkar’s backing vocals provide a good harmony to accompany Armaan, and it sounds good more so because the overdone harmonizations with the voices in Arijit’s version just failed to make a mark. The arrangements are better in the second version too, but they become quite boring after a while. At least real instruments like the guitar (Nyzel D’Lima) and violin (Manas Kumar) are brilliant here. The first version however, is overdone with techno sounds, and that kills the original old song. Rajendra Krishan’s lyrics from the original song have also been retained, thankfully. Except when Tulsi sings and they have to change the gender of the sentence, which was originally from the male point of view. (Like changing leta to leti). More of a revival, rather than a remake, but all that this so-called “revival” could do, is to make us return to the original classic!

 

3. Dil Mein Chhupa Loonga

The Meet Brothers step into the album, hopefully in order to save it.. I mean, I really expect a lot from them after their work after their split with Anjjan. So this song happens to be a remake of R.D. Burman’s immensely popular ‘Aise Na Mujhe Tum Dekho’ (Darling Darling), and just hearing that this song has been remade, made me excited! But I must say, what I got wasn’t exactly what I was expecting. Of course, the hookline is amazing, what with more sensuality infused into its tune by slowing down its pace, but the padding is quite disappointing. The mukhda starts the song off on a faltering note, which gets stabilised only when the hookline arrives. The antara too sounds very generic and seems like an attempt to redo the ‘Aaj Phir’ (Hate Story 2) and ‘Tumhe Apna Banane Ka’ (Hate Story 3), which just seems more accentuated because of that slow-paced guitar-and-tabla arrangement that all three of these songs have. Anyway, the arrangements are good and suitable for the theme of the song. The acoustic guitars (Pawan Rasaily) sound nice and soothing, while those very typical tablas (in these songs) give it a more earthy touch, along with certain Arabic-sounding elements. The digital beats too, sound very typical. On the vocals front, ws have Armaan and Tulsi again, and Armaan sounds awesome as always, again reminding one of his rendition of ‘Tumhe Apna’ (Hate Story 3). The way he sings the hookline, he’s sure to get even more female followers. Tulsi, on the other hand, sounds atrocious trying to sound different. Meet Bros’ experimentation to make her sound more “you-know-what” fail when she starts sounding like Manjulika. Plus, that double-voice-overlapping thing doesn’t work with even Shreya Ghoshal, (remember ‘Mashallah’ from ‘Ek Tha Tiger’?) so how did the composers think it would work Tulsi? Lastly, the lyrics. Kumaar’s new lyrics suit the theme of the song, but aren’t really innovative; all the Bollywood clichés repeat themselves yet again. A revamp that could’ve been great, but ends up being mediocre.

 

4. Maahi Ve

The last song on the album is also a remake, but happens to be a remake of a relatively newer song, ‘Maahi Ve’ (Kaante). People are still coping with the craze of the old song, and T-Series decides to remake it even before the old song’s magic wears away. Anyway, that’s none of our business. The song has been recreated by composer duo Gourov-Roshin, the same duo who remade ‘Kaate Nahin Kat Te’ in ‘Force 2’ and Punjabi Folk song ‘Nachna Aaonda Nahin’ in ‘Tum Bin 2’. Both of those songs, they didn’t quite get it right, what with excessive techno sounds and loud noises overpowering he melodies. This time, not only is Anand Raaj Anand’s original tune sounding great in the hookline, but the padding hat the duo provides in the form of the mukhda and antaras, also sounds nice. It has been composed nicely, perfect for the lounge song theme and NOT excessively and unnecessarily sensual-sounding. It actually sounds like a sad song, like the old song did. I myself cannot believe that I liked the remake. Maybe it is because I didn’t really love the old song too much either.. though I did like it. The arrangements by the duo are cool, especially the minimalistic techno sounds in the hookline. There is not much more to hear in terms of arrangements, but the whole sound of the song is lounge-ish. The interludes are good, having some kind of Arabic music playing in both of them. Neha Kakkar, Gourov-Roshin’s regular Singer, renders this one perfectly. Who could be a better replacement for Richa Sharma than Neha Kakkar? (Well maybe Sonu Kakkar could, but “assi ki kariye!?”) Amit Gupta’s robotic voice might sound irritating at first, but you learn to ignore that as the song progresses. Kumaar’s new lyrics, thankfully, are not cheap, but they take forward the a!bience of he song nicely in connection with Dev Kohli’s original words. A surprisingly good remake!! #5StarHotelSong!!


Wajah Tum Ho doesn’t really cater to my likes. An album full of remakes of great classics, out of which two remakes do not live up to the standards of the original. One original song, which fails because of a certain female singer, but excels in one of its three versions. Not a very enticing summary of an album, is it? But will T-Series understand? No. They’ll always be adamant on ruining old songs to add into their films; so be it. The album reeks of stale compositions and/or boring arrangements. One song, by Gourov-Roshin, a duo that has only disappointed up till this song, stands out as a good one, though it will be forgotten in no time. All in all, it is an album depending on the remakes to propel it forward.

The Legend of Michael Mishra is an upcoming Bollywood comedy film, starring Arshad Warsi, Boman Irani, Aditi Rao Hydari and Kayoze Irani in prominent roles. The movie is directed by Manish Jha, the director of ‘Anwar’, and produced by Kishor Arora, Shareen Mantri Kedia, and Wave Cinemas. The film is a quirky comedy, with a romance being its core topic. From the looks of it, it seems quite quirky alright, and it also seems like the props and sets and everything were unusually lavish and colorful. I can’t help but state here, that usually, when Bollywood does all this, the films land flat on their faces. Hopefully, we can expect something better from this! Moving on, the music is composed a long list of relative newcomers, except one team who we are quite acquainted with — Meet Bros. Anjjan, which signifies that their song had been composed quite some time ago, when they used to work as a trio. Of course, I’m excited for that one as I’ve started to like their music quite a lot! Then we have a whole list of new composers, the first ones being Nikhil-Ujjwal. Their names are Nikhil Malhotra and Ujjwal Kashyap, and it is their first Bollywood outing. Next we have another debutant duo, Som-Raul (Som Riggs & Rahul Singh). The fourth composer is Abhinav Bansal, a man who used to compose songs and release them as YouTube videos, until the makers of this film came along and not only noticed him, but also roped him in as a composer for their movie. And last, we have Rishi-Siddharth, who had composed for ‘Love Shagun’ earlier this year. Each of the composer teams have one song, making the album a five-song album. Hopefully, the album turns out as ‘legendary’ as it’s supposed to!!


1. Luv Letter
Singers ~ Kanika Kapoor & Meet Bros, Music by ~ Meet Bros. Anjjan, Lyrics by ~ Kumaar

Of course, first up is the song that would reach out to most people, what with Kanika Kapoor being the singer! 😀 The makers have taken a great step in releasing it first, because, believe me, as massy as the other songs are, they wouldn’t have made the public so !much interested in the movie as this has. 😀 So, here we get a Kanika Kapoor song with MBA as the first song on the album. The composition is enjoyable, with a peppy groove to it, and surprisingly bearing very less resemblance to ‘Baby Doll’ (Ragini MMS 2) In fact, the mukhda sounds quite retro like those old songs of the 50s etc. Meet Bros. & Anjjan have worked quite well to make the song sound distinguishing, while at the same time ensuring that it turns out to be a ctachy affair in all. And may I also say that this song has been composed before ‘Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan’ (Roy) and would’ve released before it if the film hadn’t been delayed. That explains the similarities between this song and that, especially in the rap by Meet Bros. The song doesn’t actually resemble ‘Baby Doll’, but it resembles ‘Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan’ quite a bit! Nevertheless, it turns out to be groovy and enjoyable, as I’ve already said. The arrangements consist of the same beats and sound quite similar to ‘Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan’ as well. The techno sounds are quite groovy though. The popping sounds are cute as ever. Kanika’s voice, the oh-so-distinguished voice from everybody else, manages to grab your attention, and she puts on that innocent, sweet girl tone while singing this song. And then there’s Kumaar’s lyrics. Nonsensical as they are, they’re fun to hear. An enjoyable affair, but loses points in the resemblances to previous MBA songs! Something that is enjoyable and will be a mass hit, but will get washed out with the passage of time!

 

2. Ishq Di Gaadi
Singer ~ Karthik Dhiman, Music by ~ Nikhil-Ujjwal, Lyrics by ~ Nikhil, Ujjwal & Akash

The first debutantes of the album, Nikhil-Ujjwal, step into the album with a very folksy and upbeat song. The composition is something that I would associate to the phrase ‘Bhojpuri movie’ before I seriously start listening to its various aspects or start reviewing it seriously. So yeah, the treatment given to the song is kind of over-folksy, something I do not like at all! However, the base composition is one that would have sounded good had it not been treated so folksily. The composition as it stands sounds very mediocre, and has nothing in it that would grab your attention, and nothing to hear the song again and again for. The arrangements are good in that they have tried to resemble a village as far as possible. There’s a ‘however’ to this too! The ‘however’ is that the village treatment seems so forced, that it is hard to believe. You get through the whole song with a straight face and your body in the same position as it was at the beginning of the song. (I thought that according to Newton, a body changes its state of rest when an external force acts on it! I guess there is no force in this song then!) A cute string instrument however, is quite entertaining. The percussion is commendable, but not does in a tasteful manner here, unfortunately. The singer, Karthik Dhiman, has a good rustic voice, but it has been overdone again, and the high pitch doesn’t help at all. In the supposedly romantic song, it is a very big spoilsport. All it does is irritates. The composer duo writes the lyrics along with someone named Akash, and they can come up with strictly amateur lyrics, which actually make you think that the song is from a Bhojpuri film! Rustic-ness, gone wrong!!

 

3. Phir Tu
Singer ~ Sakina Khan, Music by ~ Abhinav Bansal, Lyrics by ~ Abhinav Bansal

Abhinav Bansal, who was discovered by the makers through YouTube, gets to compose the next song, a soft and pensive melody that instantly works its black magic on you. The composition is slow-paced and dreamily solemn. The hookline is really touching and again, is something that you will instantly develop a liking towards. The mukhda is enough to make you ready for the pensiveness that follows, while the antara makes things lighter with a higher pitch. All in all, the debutant’s composition is excellent. His arrangements as well, are mind blowing. Though more on the minimalist side, they stand out perfectly. The song starts with something like a harp, which gets you ready for a serious melody that is coming up. Acoustic guitars and strings join in by the first hookline. Finger snaps make a catchy rhythm in such a mellow song, while a very attractive violin piece entertains in the interludes. The guitar riff that constantly plays in the background is quite engaging as well. Sakina Khan (who debuted in ‘Love Shagun’, coincidentally singing for Rishi-Siddharth, who have a song in the album, and after that sung a foot-tapping song in ‘Phobia’) sings the pensive melody with a lull that truly lulls you, and you find your mind floating dreamily through the song, until it stops. Her husky voice texture is such a boon for the song; it makes the song listenable on loop. Abhinav also writes suitable lyrics to the song, something to think over while hearing the song. A beautiful melody, composed brilliantly by a newcomer! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

4. Nikhatoo
Singer ~ Som Riggs, Music by ~ Som-Raul, Lyrics by ~ Amitabh Ranjan

An untuned radio transistor starts off this quirky song, composed by newcomer duo Som-Raul, until the radio settles on a frequency which has some wonderful Arabic percussion and strings playing. The dynamic-ness of it all makes you all set to hear the rest of the song, which is a really enjoyable, groovy and quirky dance fest. The composition has many twists and turns, and so infectiously crazy, that you will definitely end up with your limbs moving in one direction and your head moving in the opposite — even if that’s impossible! Now, this is how a effective village touch can be given to a song. The composers have fused the very folksy composition with very attractive sound effects, like the aforementioned radio transistor, and quirky sounds that cannot be described at all. Most of the grooviness lies in the magic the composers have made while playing with the techno sounds and experimenting by distorting and cramming them into various places in the song. Som Riggs has sung in so many different voices, that it is hard to believe that there is only one man singing the entire song! The duo has really worked hard to make all those weird sounds fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. Towards the end, there is even a very, very effective increase in both pitch and tempo, making the infectious energy of the song increase manifold with it! The quirkiness of it all highly impresses! Amitabh Ranjan has also written some lyrics that are cute and humorous at the same time. And then the hookline is just too crazy! “Hum ho Gaye tohpe lattoo, na samjho nikhatoo, saanjh savere ab toh daalenge tera naam mein rattoo!” A song to definitely become lattoo on! A very experimental, quirky and enjoyable debut by Som-Raul! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

5. Filam Shuru Hui Hai
Singers ~ Rishi-Siddharth, Music by ~ Rishi-Siddharth, Lyrics by ~ Alaukik Rahi

Quirky sounds played on rock guitar ensure you that the song that follows too, is going to be an entertaining one. And that is exactly what you get. Rishi-Siddharth, the only non-debuting team here, besides Meet Bros & Anjjan, have been roped in to make a song that seems to be the opening credits song. The song is an indicator that the movie has started and it is kind of a description of the scene at a movie theater. The composition is a type of pseudo-Qawwali one, with recognizable Qawwali nuances and styles. Various attractions throughout the song grab your attention and make you smile or even full-fledgedly laugh. The duo has come up with a song that is a nice, quirky and catchy opening credits song, and including it in the album is a great move, because I remember that there was such a song ‘Picture Shuru’ before ‘Barfi!’ started too, and it hadn’t been included. I guess that’s because it must be the theme song for Anurag Basu’s Picture Shuru Productions. Whatever. Back to this song. Speaking about arrangements, they are mostly Qawwali-esque arrangements like tablas and harmonium, and help the composition gain more appeal. Various other sound effects neutralize the Qawwali effects, too, though. Alaukik Rahi’s lyrics are hilarious as well as something that would be the common sight at any movie theater. It also explains the various elements that are necessary to get the the Indian mass audience to watch a film — songs, glamour, action etc. Rishi & Siddharth themselves render the song with a nasal twang, which infuses that craziness into the song — something that helps it quite a lot! The backing vocals (I guess, also by them) are mad too! All in all, a perfect end to the album, which might be the start to the movie!! #5StarHotelSong!!


The Legend Of Michael Mishra, is an album that doesn’t really impress with its mix of good and mediocre songs, but impresses individually with the last three songs. The composers, who almost all are relatively new on the music scene, have made decent efforts to keep the music in sync with the movie, and so the album scores high there. However, in spite of its quirkiness, this legend won’t stay with you for long! A washout-type album, that impresses momentarily!

One Night Stand is an upcoming Bollywood romantic thriller, starring Sunny Leone, Tanuj Virwani and Nyra Banerjee, directed by Jasmine D’Souza, wife of Tony D’Souza, the director of films like ‘Blue’, ‘Boss’ and the upcoming ‘Azhar’. The movie is produced by Pradeep Sharma & Furquan Khan. The latest trend of multi-composers for a single album has been followed for this album too, with four composers, namely Meet Bros, Tony Kakkar, Jeet Gannguli and Vivek Kar. I have started hearing the album with very little expectations (just saying), so it’s up to these four to impress me with the music for this movie. Meet Bros have been impressive this year, so expecting more of that from them. Jeet hasn’t quite touched the standards with his two songs in ‘Sanam Re’, but I know he has the potential to even raise the standards, so hoping he does some of his exceptional magic here. As for Tony, he has been going on and off when it comes to giving good songs — I can only hope for the best! Vivek Kar, a relative newcomer, hasn’t really impressed with any of his earlier songs (all for very small-budget films), so I don’t know what to expect from him here. With that, here I go to start hearing the songs of this album!


1. Do Peg Maar
Singer ~ Neha Kakkar, Music by ~ Tony Kakkar, Lyrics by ~ Tony Kakkar

The album starts off with the quintessential Bollywood club song about drinks, to say it modestly. Tony has never impressed me with his upbeat tracks, just because he goes a bit too over-the-top with them. The EDM is always overdone, the composition is always too self-imposing on the listener, so much so that it actually does get stuck in the listeners’ heads, but unwantedly. The vocals are always over-stylish. This song, too, faces the same problems. Tony tries to create something catchy, but it comes across merely as annoying and irritating. right from the beginning, that heavy EDM hits your ears and sounds really cheap, which I’m sure wasn’t what Tony wanted. The mukhda has that really bad “trying-to-sound-cool-but-failing-miserably” feel to it. The first time you hear it, you won’t even think it has a tune. At least the antaras are better on that front, but just a little; the overall sound is still cheap. Tony has employed his sister Neha to sing (or rather, cough) this one. I say ‘cough’ because Neha has used a really weird froggy voice here, sounding as if she has a problem with her throat. Again, trying to be cool. Arrangements are nothing but techno beats and loud bombardments of EDM. Even Neha, who usually sounds so energetic in her songs, seems to be bored here. The less said about Tony’s lyrics, the better. It isn’t something he will look back to fifty years later and say, “What a soulful piece I’d penned down!” However, there is one thing that happens with this song, and which happens with all such songs — if you keep hearing it, it will infect you and never leave your brain! So stop before that happens. Usually for bad songs, I say stuff like “hear it only for blah and blah”, but this time, there’s nothing for which you should hear it! Just skip it! A cheap start to the album.

 

2. Ijazat
Singers ~ Arijit Singh, Music by ~ Meet Bros, Lyrics by ~ Shabbir Ahmed

The next song provides respite from the harsh opening to the album. Meet Bros step into the album to save the day. Their latest with Arijit, ‘Girl I Need You’ (Baaghi), was excellent, so this one was expected to be on the same lines. However, the two songs are poles apart in treatment and other aspects. Acoustic guitars very responsibly manage the opening of the song, with strings joining. Arijit starts off with a melancholic tune, very Bhatt-ish in flavour, but at the same time, not exhausting at all. As he progresses, all  you can do is drown in the ambience created by Meet Bros and Arijit’s vocals. I think it is the first time Meet Bros have gone completely Bhatt-ish in their composition, and they core full marks. They don’t go too typical, though the hookline is predictable; instead, they come up with a song that has good luck just like some of those songs in Bhatt movies, which are no different from the rest, but just seem better than the rest for some reason. Arijit uses his drowsy voice, but this time, it appeals; I guess due to the sultry composition. The composition is excellent. In the hookline, a wonderful portion where Arijit touches the high notes all of a sudden, has been composed so wonderfully, and sung just as effortlessly by Arijit. It is the part when he sings “Aaadat haiiiii ohhhhhh”. It gave me the goosebumps! Arrangements are like a typical Bhatt song — guitars, strings, piano. The only new addition that is really attractive is the accordion that sounds ever-so-scintillating. You have to hear it in the first interlude, where its use has been made to the fullest. The second interlude is also awesome, with a wonderful strings solo, played in a Hindustani classical way. Shabbir surprises highly with his good lyrics, and he has written some stuff that really sounds very good and even better with Meet Bros’ music. Meet Bros strike gold again, this time with something heard-before and with very few innovation! But they still manage to make it a #5StarHotelSong!!

 

3. Ishq Da Sutta
Singers ~ Meet Bros & Jasmine Sandlas, Music by ~ Meet Bros, Lyrics by ~ Kumaar, Rap by ~ Jasmine Sandlas

This one does start off well. A twinkly sound opens the sound with various cool and addictive techno sounds. Then it sounds like a pop song since the singers tell their own names in the song (that’s so irritating in pop songs!! We read the credits!) However, that doesn’t matter at all. The song is yet another club song, but not exactly out-and-out clubbish, until the line before the hookline. Meet Bros’ song is totally dependent on the arrangements to score well. The composition is weak, with a very small part to like, for example, the line I mentioned which comes before the hookline — “nashe mein aaj phisalke..”. The hookline, too, is enjoyable. Meet Bros’ interruptions are cool, too! They definitely know how to keep the listener from getting bored. So, though the composition is predominantly weak, some parts here and there grab your attention. The arrangements, on the other hand, are just as Meet Bros would have wanted them to be — addictive, catchy and cool! I never like techno arrangements much, but here, Meet Bros have impressed me with it. Piano and guitars along with the clubbish sounds, really sound great! The arrangements really make sure the listener doesn’t get bored even if the composition is weak. Especially the arrangements in the second interlude, before Jasmine’s rap, are too cool. Meet Bros’ part in the song is too catchy, and doesn’t seem forcedly cool at all. I guess they have cool-ness already inside them. Coming towards the vocals, Jasmine doesn’t sound too good. Yo Yo Honey Singh’s find, I didn’t like her in her debut song, ‘Yaar Na Miley’ (Kick) either. Here, she sounds way too masculine, and I wonder why someone like Hard Kaur wouldn’t have worked. Oh, right, she’s older and might not have the same charm as before, right??? :\ (Sarcasm) Kumaar’s lyrics are not good either, but they suit this type of song. Jasmine’s English rap is pathetic. Meet Bros’ not-so-cool composition excellently enhanced by their too-cool arrangements, but destroyed by Jasmine’s trying-to-be-too-cool voice, doesn’t fare so good.

 

4. Ki Kara
Singers ~ Shipra Goyal, Music by ~ Vivek Kar, Lyrics by ~ Kumaar

Vivek Kar steps into the album for this song, which, again, starts off excellently. Guitars and piano make a wonderful start for melancholic romantic songs in Bollywood, and it’s also a commonly used beginning in Bollywood. The song is wholly and solely in Punjabi, written by Kumaar, so there I kind of had a problem understanding half the words. 😅 Vivek’s overall composition is good, but it gets pretty monotonous and boring at a certain point. The pace, for one, is quite slow, and the arrangements are not captivating at all. Though the composition is decent, the arrangements could’ve had the power to lift it up, if only a bit. Shipra sounds pretty good, but in some parts she sounds exhausted, maybe deliberately. She sings in a low voice, which doesn’t sound so good on her. I can’t help but think how good she sounded under the direction of Vishal-Shekhar in ‘Ishq Bulaava’ (Hasee Toh Phasee). The hookline of the song is good, but again, could’ve been more captivating! The arrangements, as I said before, are a bit on the weaker side. Guitars, both acoustic and electric, sound good, and so do the flutes. But almost half the song has very little arrangements, or they are too soft, and so because of the monotonous composition, the song sounds boring in those parts. In fact, the first time I heard it, I couldn’t pay attention to the song at all; it didn’t let me! Disappointing! A song that could’ve been better!

 

5. Le Chala
Singers ~ Jubin Nautiyal, Music by ~ Jeet Gannguli, Lyrics by ~ Manoj Muntashir

Jeet steps in for his one and only song in the album, and how he impresses! Right from the starting piano notes, which are very captivating, to the end of the song, you can forget about everything else except the song. It is a sweet, romantic song with a happy ring to it, unlike ‘Ijazat’, which was a bit sultry. This one will surely appeal to those who love such romantic songs. Jeet doesn’t try to make the song sound too modern, and instead, makes the composition sound a bit dated, but that is the real magic in the song! The hookline is the perfect example of it; it is nothing we haven’t heard before, but it still appeals just because of the simplicity. The mukhda is the ideal start to the song, and works just like a mukhda should, which is to captiavte listeners in the first minute or so of the song. The antaras get a bit of a melancholic tinge, but still, they stand out, because of the 2000s feel. Jeet’s instrumentation is beautiful. Piano and guitars again, with variosu digital beats. Jeet uses both acoustic and electric guitars very well! The way an electric guitar riff plays in the background during the hookline, sounds very great! The first interlude is a wonderful sitar solo, but played in such a way, you almost mistake it for a piano! The second interlude is a great strings orchestra with horns blaring out beautifully. Jubin is an excellent choice for the song, and handles each and every note with his awsome voice that is smooth as cream! 😀 Manoj’s lyrics are beautiful and soulful, just as the song, though simple. Simplicity at its best!! And with this simplicity, the song wins your heart! The best song of the album for me! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

6. Tum Mere
Singer ~ Dev Negi, Music by ~ Vivek Kar, Lyrics by ~ Kumaar

Vivek comes back for the last song on the album, which is a reprise of his first song, ‘Ki Kara’. Unlike ‘Ki Kara’, this one captivates and hooks the listener right from the beginning! I was so surprised by this one! Electric guitars, a few acoustic guitars and a beautiful synthesizer tune start off the song. Dev Negi takes total control over the vocals, and does it with ease and power. The first time I heard it, I didn’t even notice it’s the reprise of ‘Ki Kara’, as I wasn’t able to pay attention to ‘Ki Kara’. The second time I heard them both, I realized that they have the same tune! Vivek gets it right this time, with perfectly captivating arrangements. The electric guitars are very catchy and instantly likable and also noticeable, unlike ‘Ki Kara’. Also, the pace of this song is faster, and it has an overall upbeat tone, unlike the whiny and monotonous nature of the first one. The composition is the same, but as I said, arrangements make a HUGE difference! It makes the composition which was sounding boring and monotonous, suddenly sound upbeat! Dev Negi’s voice is also cool in this one. That high-pitched synthesizer (I think) tune never leaves your head, and keeps coming in the song, so that it establishes a place in your mind. 😀 Kumaar has reprised the lyrics wonderfully, to make them sound more like they’re being sung from a male’s point of view. A good end to the album, and a saviour for Vivek after his other song that had disappointed. #5StarHotelSong!!


Considering that I was expecting really little from this album, Ine Night Stand turns out to be decent. Tony disappoints even more than anything, while Vivek gets it right with one out of two tracks. Meet Bros do well in both tracks, but ‘Ishq Da Sutta’ could’ve had better vocals and composition. Jeet, however, impresses with his sole song, by going on the road of simplicity. I noticed that in this album, all the good songs are really simple compositions, which aren’t anything new, but nevertheless, they appeal! The ones that try to impress going the modern way, lose it some place or the other. Therefore, in this album, only one thing stands, and that is simplicity! 🙂

Baaghi is an upcoming Bollywood action / romantic film starring Shraddha Kapoor Tiger Shroff in the lead roles and Badminton player + Telugu actor Sudheer Babu in a negative role, marking his Hindi film debut. The film has been directed by ‘Kambakkht Ishq’ and ‘Heropanti’ fame Sabbir Khan, and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala. Tiger’s first movie was also directed by the same person, produced by the same person, but ‘Heropanti’ and ‘Baaghi’ have only one person in common in the music credits, and that is Manj Musik, with one song. This album, too, follows the trend that is being liked by one and all nowadays, which is the multi-composer trend. T-Series’ hot favourite, Amaal Mallik, also composes a song, and so does Ankit Tiwari. However, Meet Bros. get the maximum number of songs (that’s just two 😛 ). Manj, last heard in ‘Singh Is Bliing’, where he composed some great songs, is expected to give great songs again. I expect Amaal to come up with another attractive and unforgettable song, and Ankit, I can’t really say what I expect, because I’m not sure if I even expect anything! Meet Bros though, stunned me with their latest ‘Ki & Ka’, so I’m awaiting some catchy songs from them in this too! 🙂 So read on to see exactly how much my expectations got fulfilled!


1. Sab Tera

Singers ~ Armaan Malik & Shraddha Kapoor, Music by ~ Amaal Mallik, Lyrics by ~ Sanjeev Chaturvedi

First up, we get Amaal’s song. It starts with a soft and soothing piano piece, followed by the same tune played on a synthesizer. Armaan’s clear and mellifluous voice starts off with the actual words of the song, and there itself, it hooks you. Shraddha follows and tries her best to sing beautifully. Though she sounds off-note at some places and too high at others, being an actress, her singing is really commendable, if not technically perfect. Armaan and Shraddha do make a great pair and complement each other very well, making it easy for us to lean back and enjoy the song. Amaal’s composition is very calm and soothing, and he relies on a traditional-sounding Indian-ish tune to take the song forward, and it works really good. Right from the mukhda, to the hookline, to the antara, the song’s tune smells strongly of India. 😀 And Amaal’s songs almost always take forward the Indian culture through their composition and music. In this song, the arrangements are blissful, and again, totally Indian! He has done all he could to make the song sound totally and wholly Indian. Here, we have various percussion sounds that are probably electronic, but sound like a dafli, again giving the Indian feel. Guitars predominantly support the composition and seem to be the main instruments in the song. They’re just too beautiful! Sanjeev’s lyrics are the typical Bollywood romantic lyrics you hear everyday, but thanks to Amaal’s magic with the composition, they’ve been elevated to a totally different level! A feel-good romantic track to start the album off with! Not one of Amaal’s best, but, in this album, it is a #5StarHotelSong!!

 

2. Let’s Talk About Love
Singers ~ Neha Kakkar, Raftaar & Manj Musik, Music by ~ Manj Musik, Lyrics by ~ Raftaar & Manj Musik

The next song is brought to us by Manj Musik, who had a fun time giving us two great songs in ‘Singh Is Bliing’ last year, an atrocious one in ‘Gabbar Is Back’, and then one good and one bad song in ‘Heropanti’, last to last year. :p So I’m really doubtful about what he has in store now! The song follows the retro template, trying to imitate songs like ‘Jabse Mere Dil Ko Uff’ (Teri Meri Kahaani) and ‘Gustaakh Dil’ (Dil Maange More), but ending up to be nothing like them. It doesn’t even reach their level. The brass instruments — trumpets, trombones, the drums, rock guitars make for a great retro rock-n-roll ambience, but the other aspects of the song totally spoil the great arrangements. Neha Kakkar and Raftaar are not apt singers for this genre at all, and neither do they suit in this song. The composition is decent, and maybe I think it’s only decent, just because the singers haven’t done a good job at presenting it to us. Maybe if they had sung better, I would’ve found the composition better! 😀 Another problem is the programming. The trumpets and guitars are so loud, that the singers’ voices can be heard without understanding head nor tail of what they’re trying to say. (Anyways, the lyrics — Raftaar & Sabbir Khan — might not even be so meaningful for us to care about what they actually ARE! 😛 ) Another thing I’d like to point out is the “GREAT” pronunciation of Raftaar. The word “love” is pronounced just as it’s spelled — instead of saying ‘luvv’! Neha sounds good, but somebody else would definitely be there, who would’ve done even better! The lyrics (at least the ones I was ‘lucky’ enough to decipher) are nothing great (e.g, ‘Tu Spiderman hai, Teri jaal mein Phasee gaya chhokra”), they’re the usual Bollywood lyrics where a boy tries to impress the girl, and the girl remains unimpressed and ignorant until the last ten-twenty seconds of the song, when she suddenly develops a liking for him. Out of the blue. Yup. All I can say is that the song shouldn’t be skipped, but shouldn’t be heard with great expectations either!

 

3. Cham Cham
Singers ~ Monali Thakur & Meet Bros, Music by ~ Meet Bros, Lyrics by ~ Kumaar, Rap by ~ Meet Bros

You all know I was impressed by Meet Bros’ work in ‘Ki & Ka’, and now they’re back with ‘Baaghi’. They bring their first song, collaborating with Monali Thakur, who had sung for them in ‘Dhol Baaje’ (Ek Paheli Leela). She had done an unbelievable job back then, a year ago, and this time too, she is expected to rock it, what with her receiving the National Award for ‘Moh Moh Ke Dhaage’ (Dum Laga Ke Haisha) and all. 😀 The song starts off with a nadaswaram as if waking everyone up at dawn, from a sound sleep. Monali joins in with the ‘cham cham cham’ accompanied by bells ringing rhythmically. As expected, Monali does an overwhelming job, this time, changing her voice texture to make it a bit harsh and rustic, as opposed to her regular soft and sooth voice texture. Meet Bros only come to rap once in the first interlude, and the rap isn’t actually a typical ‘rap’, but just some English lines in an otherwise totally Hindi song. The composition by Meet Bros is really engaging, a celebratory tune, and extremely refreshing. Both the antaras have a different tune, both equally catchy, innovative and beautiful. It just refreshes your mind for a short period of time, and this is how it tempts you to hear it once more. Arrangements are truly fantastic here in this song, with a blend of South Indian elements in a garba-style rhythm. The temple bells give a pure and sacred feel to the song. Other digital elements enhance the song too. Towards the end, the song breaks into total garba mode, with a whole tempo change too. The lyrics are, again, nothing great, but again, they’re enhanced by beautiful singing, composition, and beautiful arrangements around them. The English lyrics by Meet Bros sound weird though… Still pondering over how exactly raindrops can ‘bounce’!!! A celebratory song that has the power to get you up on your feet and dance! Pretty much PERFECT in all departments, a little less in the lyrics one though! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

4. Agar Tu Hota
Singer ~ Ankit Tiwari, Music by ~ Ankit Tiwari, Lyrics by ~ Ankit Tiwari  (😜)  Abhendra Kumar Upadhyay 

Ankit Tiwari arrives next to offer his song. His last song, ‘Alfazon Ki Tarah’ (Rocky Handsome), though being very similar to all his other songs, impressed me to a pretty good extent, and so I was open to hear this one too. 😀 And it isn’t really bad either! It starts off with piano and electric guitars in that trademark Pritam style, which he had used in ‘Mere Bina’ (Crook) and ‘Yaariyan’ (Cocktail) and also ‘Kabira’ (Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani), and which Amaal Mallik had also used in ‘Naina’ (Khoobsurat). Though the guitars were very captivating, the mukhda which follows is really captivating too, because it isn’t at all composed like Ankit’s usual composition style. However, the magic spell is apparently broken somewhere between the end of the mukhda and the end of the song, because I found myself yawning (yes, literally!) before the song ended. It was probably the repetitive guitar arrangements that helped me to get so sleepy. This time, Ankit hasn’t composed a sleepy song which is really slow-paced. The song is considerably full-of-life, if compared with his previous songs like ‘Tu Hai Ki Nahi’ (Roy), ‘Dil Darbadar’ (PK), ‘Tu Mere Paas’ (Wazir), ‘Tu Jo Hain’, ‘Saad Shukrana’ (Mr. X) and the list goes on and on..! His voice also sounds natural in this song, surprisingly devoid of that irritating autotuning, or maybe it has been reduced, and I’m glad that he sounds great anyways. 🙂 The lyrics are pretty good, but here it is exactly the opposite of what happened in the other songs, where the lyrics fell short of the composition’s beauty. Here, the lyrics overpower the composition. Abhendra has written really commendable lyrics, which must be heard. On a whole, a decent affair. Lyrics are a must-hear, while arrangements are livelier than the other Ankit songs. What spoils it is that somewhere in the song, listeners are bound to lose interest, which indirectly means that it would’ve been better had the song been shorter! Otherwise, an applause-worthy attempt by Ankit!

 

5. Girl I Need You
Singers ~ Roach Killa, Arijit Singh, Khushboo Grewal & Meet Bros, Backing Vocals ~ Uddipan Sharma, Music by ~ Meet Bros, Lyrics by ~ Kumaar

Soothing piano notes start off the last song in the album, with amazing vocal supplementary rhythms. All this is just a sneak peek of what’s to come. It cools you down for the time being, but as soon as Arijit kicks in, you can’t help but relax and pay attention to nothing else but the song. You just completely submit to the song. This happens because of two things — first of all, Arijit’s voice has a really magical impact on you and secondly, Meet Bros’ composition is unmatchable! It just lets you drown in the song. The mukhda by Arijit seamlessly makes way for Roach Killa’s hookline, and he totally takes away the show! It’s his part that give you the most goosebumps! His seemingly breathless Hindi rap lines after the hookline reminded me of Shreya Ghoshal’s similar part in ‘Tere Naina’ (Chandni Chowk To China) Khushboo gets some beautiful lines to sing in each antara, and she carries them out with perfection. It is interesting how Arijit doesn’t actually become the leading vocalist in the song, being supported by two others, who give a great competition to him, sometimes even overpowering him! Especially Roach Killa! Meet Bros’ programming on Khushboo’s voice, is awesome, making it double and all, making it sound even more magical. Meet Bros’ composition is one-of-a-kind, a blend of a traditional Indian tune with a totally western complement. Arijit’s parts sound totally Indian, while Roach Killa’s sound totally Western, and Khushboo’s somewhere in the middle. Arijit gets two awesome lines right before the antara ends, which really sound cute! And what’s more, the song has been decorated by amazing arrangements, like flute (Naveen Kumar) and tablas and whatnot. The guitars (Pawan Rasaily) are great and play an important part in making the song what it is, beautifully unique. There is a breathtaking flute solo in the second interlude, which is worth dying for! Meet Bros have graced the composition with great beats, so much so that it almost starts resembling English pop songs in general, but then the oriental instruments like the flute (the way it’s played here) and the tabla, are what keep is from drifting off towards the West, and bring us back to India! Lyrics by Kumaar are beautiful too, or it must be the composition which makes them sound so good. Even the rap parts by Roach Killa are outstanding. Never have I praised Meet Bros so much, not even before their split from Anjjan and not even after. So, all it proves is that this song is the BEST from them out of all of their previous works! Great arrangements, beautiful composition, awesome vocals (and also, not relying on solely Arijit to take forth the song) give the song a unique touch!! The best of Meet Bros, the best of the album, and one of the best songs of the year till now! Also, a trendsetter for Meet Bros and the whole of Bollywood!! Waiting for more like this from Meet Bros! Definitely a #5StarHotelSong!!


Baaghi is definitely a mixed bag album. On one side, Amaal, as always, doesn’t disappoint and gives a soothing romantic melody, while on the other side Manj Musik fails miserably to create a catchy upbeat dance track. Where Ankit gives commendable stuff, stepping out of his comfort zone, Meet Bros score great with both of their songs! So I can’t really call any song bad as such, as each of them has their own strong parts. It is Meet Bros who take away the prize though, with one song that’s really good, and another that’s an example for all the other composers! Meet Bros continue to be on fire….!!! Along with Amaal, they make sure that this album isn’t as much a ‘baaghi’ (rebellious) as its title suggests!! 🙂
