Bombay Velvet is an upcoming Bollywood crime drama film, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma in the lead roles, and Karan Johar in a negative role. The movie is directed by Anurag Kashyap, and produced by Fox Star Studios, Vikramaditya Motwane, and Vikas Bahl at Phantom. The movie tells the story of a boxer, Johnny Balraj (Ranbir Kapoor) and an aspiring jazz singer Rosie Noronha (Anushka Sharma) and how their hopes and dreams collide with their individual realities. Karan Johar plays Kaizad Khambata, a Parsi media mogul with shades of grey. Well, we all know how Amit Trivedi rose to fame with Anurag Kashyap’s film’s album composed by him, ‘Dev D’. Once again, Anurag consults Amit to compose the soundtrack for his film, and this time, we expect something more huge, and also something that would remind us of the 60s jazz era, in which the film is set. For those who really can’t wait to read the whole review and then get to know what I have to say about this album, here’s a bit of a relief for you: Let me say that Amit Trivedi has, yet again, proved how great he is!! For those who want to read on, they may do so, but you have been warned — The review is NOT, I repeat, NOT short!! 😀 🙂 Please bear with me this time, because it’s not everyday that a 15-track album comes releasing along. 😛 So, grab some popcorn, otherwise, water/milk will suffice…. 😝

When you get to remake a song that was originally composed by the maestro O.P. Nayyar,one of the greatest composers Bollywood has ever had, you better consider yourself very lucky. And Mikey McCleary has got exactly this opportunity. First of all, let me get it clear that the remake of the classic song originally sung by Geeta Dutt, is nowhere near the level of the original. However, this is always the case with remixes of our favourite classics, therefore, to judge by comparing to the original is really unfair. Here, I have to say, that the effort done by Mikey to successfully enhance this song is great. He tries to enliven the song, by adding his characteristic quirk and wonderful retro jazzy arrangements. The composition by O.P. Nayyar is too classic and too good, hence, as we can see, Mikey hasn’t altered it even a bit. Good decision. Suman, though sounding quirky and unique, doesn’t exactly do justice to the original rendition by Geeta Dutt. In some parts, she sounds too weird, not exactly going with the song. However, the energy in her voice has to be appreciated. Mikey’s new arrangements have really pepped up the old song a lot, adding many things that wouldn’t have appealed to the public at that time, but will definitely attract listeners now, such as the jazzy techno beats, and the trumpets, saxophone and drums. Majrooh Sultanpuri’s lyrics from the original have also been retained and used as they were in the original. Though Suman sounds a bit too dramatic at places, it is a great attempt at energizing the original by Mikey, yet not coming even this close to the originals level. Nevertheless, it’s a #5StarHotelSong!

And now, let’s start with the review of the original soundtrack of BOMBAY VELVET released by Zee Music Company & Sony Music. Composed by Amit Trivedi, written by Amitabh Bhattacharya! 🙂

1. Aam Hindustani
Singer ~ Shefali Alvares

The very first song on the soundtrack of this massive album, starts in a very unique way. A solo clarinet opens up, after a few seconds joined by piano, violins and whatnot, and really giving a full-fledged circus or carnival feel, and a few seconds into the song, you feel like you’re in the age of Charlie Chaplin, since the whole instrumentation is quite similar to what we hear in old clips featuring Charlie Chaplin and his comic scenes. And get this: The instrumental prelude continues for three minutes and twenty-five seconds!! Showcasing great diversity of instruments, ranging from quirky clarinets and piano, to grand trumpets, trombones, dynamic drums and even majestic strings, the prelude doesn’t get you bored for even a second! What follows after this long, entertaining prelude, is just enough to consolidate your assurance that you won’t get bored in the whole nine minutes for which this song plays. Yes!! Nine minutes! Consisting of three and a half minutes of prelude, and the remaining five and a half minutes, a proper song with a mukhda and two antaras, or technically, three mukhdas because all three stanzas have the same tune. And the foot-tapping tune is so effective, that it makes Shefali, a club singer, actually sound really sophisticated as a jazz singer! Undoubtedly, it is the best song that she has sung. The various sound effects she does herself with her voice like “tadyau dadyaun dadyaun” and all, sounds great. Amit’s tune very closely follows the jazz template, and it results in a peppy number to which you can nod your heads along. The arrangements continue just as awesome as they were is prelude, and carry the whole song along, giving it the strength to move along, and us the patience through sit through this long, but winner of a song. The song gets pretty paced-up in the epilogue, and provides a grand finale-ish feel, with Shefali delivering a power-packed ending to the song, which ends it just as dynamically as it started. Amitabh, with his lyrics, yet again, spins out the same quirk and brilliance which he is known for. This song is like a mockery to the middle-class Indians, who weren’t that well off in those days, while these jazz singers and all lived luxurious lives. 😂 A perfect and booming start to this much-awaited soundtrack! The stars of this song are the arrangements by Amit, and of course, undoubtedly, Shefali, with her career-best performance! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

2. Mohabbat Buri Bimari (Version 2) / Mohabbat Buri Bimari (Version 3)

{Before you wonder whether I know how to count and that surely, 1 comes before 2 or 3, let me clarify that I will review ‘Version 1’, but you will have to wait a bit 😛 😀 }

This next song on the album starts in an equally unique and pretty similar way as the first song started. This time, a trombone gets to welcome us into the song, joined later on by drums, the piano and those quirky waltzy beats. Both of the versions have exactly the same musical arrangements, but the only difference is in the vocals. While one of them is sung wonderfully and lovably by Neeti Mohan, the other is sung rather casually and in a full-of-attitude way by Shefali Alvares. The composition by Amit is utterly sweet and something that will take time to grow on you, but something that will have you under its control in no time, once you start liking it. The hookline especially, has been composed pretty awkwardly, with many of the words not exactly fitting into proper beats. Nonetheless, this quality is the winning quality of the tune. Arrangements are very catchy, and are something to pay close, close attention to. The heart-winning xylophone that comes around occasionally throughout the song, really has a charming effect. Trumpets do most of the work in the hookline, joining each line of the composition to the next, in a very grand manner. The other brass instruments used in the song are really impressive as well. Drumbeats, naturally, lay a prominent role in the song as they do in all jazz pieces. Now to talk about the differences that the singers create in either version. As said before, Neeti’s version is instantly lovable due to her sweet and civilized rendition. Her gimmicks inserted at places really pep up matters in the song. On the other hand, the equally enjoyable version by Shefali has a whole different reason to be loved. Shefali is made to sing in a carefree attitude, and more like an uncivilized, unruly and ill-mannered daredevil girl. 😀 And she carries out this impersonation of that girl very promisingly. Actually, her voice is already that way. 😂 (OK sorry..) Amitabh’s lyrics entertainingly compare love to a bad disease, which can’t be controlled and all the side effects of falling in love, like “Ghar se khuda ko hataake, mehboob ki tasveer taange”. 😛 A just as entertaining song as the first, mostly because of the renditions by the vocalists, and the entertaining lyrics, with the tune also taking its time to make its way to your heart! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

3. Ka Kha Gha
Singer ~ Neeti Mohan

The brass family of instruments kickstarts the next song of the album as well, with the drums to support them. And what follows is an intoxicating and weirdly addictive song, sensuously carried out by Neeti Mohan. Amit’s tune is enough. It’s the only thing you need to get hooked right away to the song. The dark and sinister feel of the song is what makes it so appealing to the ears. Of course, the jazz, cabaret-ish feel follows us here too, and it sounds extraordinary, when it comes together with this marvelous composition. Arrangements are the regular jazzy things, trumpets, trombones, engaging drumbeats and those short and light piano notes, that are played in such an appealing manner. The irresistible saxophone in the first interlude is just mind-blowing! Closing my eyes and paying close attention to the whole feel of the song, I could picturize those grey characters which we see in films of the 60s, standing suspiciously in one of the corners, smoking and listening intently to the jazz singer, but actually hatching plans in their mind. 😂 That just proves how efficiently Amit Trivedi has brought back the 60s jazz era and recreated it in his own way, and also without doubt conveys the message to us, that he has succeeded in his attempt. Amitabh’s lyrics, again, are a description of love, about its unpredictable and vicious character. The phrase “pyaar ka seekha hai Ka Kha Ga Gha”, itself means, “I’ve learnt the basics of love.” or “I’ve learnt the ABCD’s of love”. The whole song is based on that. What really makes you want to go back to this song again and again, is Neeti’s flawless rendition. From being the good girl in the previous track, she suddenly transforms and puts on a naughty voice for this track. Her “aye” sounds perfect each time she says it. She undoubtedly becomes the star of the song right away due to the exemplary delivery of the composition by her! This one takes you back to the sinister 60s, thanks to Amit’s reminiscent tune and Neeti’s rich vocals!! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

4. Dhadaam Dhadaam
Singer ~ Neeti Mohan

Dramatic strings welcome you to the next song. After some pep, some romance and some sensuality, it is now time for some melancholia, which this song very beautifully brings with itself. Those violins that open up the song really fascinate you, making you wonder what is so special that Amit had to appoint violins this time, instead of the regular jazz brass instruments to open up the song. When Neeti starts the song, you get to know the reason, which is that, the song is a sad song, full of emotion, quite like the old Bollywood songs of the similar type. Neeti delivers this melodious song with such expression, that it actually makes you want to cry. The song has this amazing opera-esque feel to it, with the jazz taking the backseat for a moment and letting the opera overshadow it. A perfect jazzy blues song, as they are called, has been presented in front of us by Amit Trivedi. Again, Neeti carries out the high notes of this piece with splendid ease, and seems effortless in her rendition. Her usually thin voice booms in this song. Towards the ending, it really sounds as if she’s crying in agony. What a convincing performance! Arrangements are also fantastic, with the strings taking the lead here, of course not completely diminishing the jazz essentials: trumpets, saxophones and trombones. Drums and those piano staccato notes are also heard. Am it’s composition is also very touchy and emotional. It has provided a great scope for Neeti to do whatever she has. Lyrics by Amitabh, are also very sentimental, and the composition goes perfectly with them. A very touchy song, whose star is definitely Neeti!! What a convincing act by her! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

5. Naak Pe Gussa
Singer ~ Neeti Mohan

Lively trumpets and drums build up a very catchy rhythm to start off the next song, a very sweet and entertaining yet calming number. The dynamic nature of the trumpets and drums does start the song off on a pretty loud note, but this slowly reduces to make an entry for someone I’ve really started worshipping after these three songs above — Neeti Mohan! Yup, she comes behind the mic for yet another song. But who’s complaining? This song is a cute number in which the protagonist is trying to conciliate her lover, who’s upset. The composition by Amit is nothing but an ingenious one, something that one would instantly fall in love with. It resembles the old Bollywood songs of the 60s, like those from ‘Waqt’. The roothna-manaana nature of it, is one of its USPs. Especially the line “Bahut paheliyaan banaa chukey ho tum, abb aake hal bataa bhi do” has been composed very, very sweetly. The wonderful arrangements continue with this song as well; the trumpets and drums being the most noticeable and lovable. The perky way that the trumpets have been blown after each line that Neeti sings, is to fall for! The guitar can also be heard in many places, which gives that familiar Amit Trivedi touch to it, and just as you can recognise a close friend’s voice, you instantly see that Amit Trivedi touch in the composition of the guitar notes. Also the humming by Amit Trivedi at places, which is the most familiar characteristic of his music, you find yourself falling for! Amitabh’s lyrics are again class, and demonstrate beautifully the act of rootho-fying and manao-fying. And last but not the least, Neeti’s on-the-target delivery of the composition makes it sound even more pleasant, sugary-sweet and acts as the cherry on top. 🙂 There’s absolutely no need of telling how wonderfully she’s carried out this one! 🙂 One of the cutest songs of the album, and a very pleasant throwback to the 60s!! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

6. Sylvia
Singer ~ Neeti Mohan

A peppy, upbeat rhythm on drums and violins, welcomes listeners into the next track, probably the track of the album resembling O.P. Nayyar’s classics the most. The rhythm has wonderfully been underlaid on a foot-tapping composition, which reminds you of the 50s era of Bollywood music. Amit has very efficiently tried to recreate that era, with a touch of his own quirk and the pre-existing quirk of the 50s. The dynamic hookline has the capacity to keep your ears attuned to the song, ensuring not even a second of boredom. Once again, Neeti proves her expertise in singing, and sings this song just as good as the others. Actually, she sounds extremely lovable in this song! Personally, this one is my favourite on the soundtrack, just because of the addictive tune and mind-blowing performance by Neeti. It really took the song to a whole new level, and reminded me of Geeta Dutt’s classic songs. However, the arrangements of this song make it what it is. They really cheer you up, what with the lively way in which the drums, violins, trumpets, and piano have been played. You just feel like leaving whatever you’re doing, and concentrate on this gem of a song. The quirky way in which each instrument is played, has got to have a lasting effect on you. The interludes keep you hooked and make sure you don’t lose interest in between. And the wonderful male backing vocals — Wow! Amitabh’s lyrics very entertainingly sum up for us, the incident of the Nanavati Case. The protagonist in the song is talking about Sylvia, probably gossiping through a song. 😂 Anyways, it is pretty fun to hear. This one is quite enjoyable and quirky! Fun! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

7. Darbaan
Singer ~ Papon

After so many female solo songs, we finally get to hear the first (and only) solo male song of the album. And the man who is chosen to do the honors is none other than Papon. The composition is another typical jazz composition, and yet another appealing one, too, for that matter. This one starts with sublime piano notes accompanied by awesome trumpets, saxophones and drumbeats. Papon, with his silky smooth and intoxicating voice takes over, and you just drown in the wonderful experience which this song provides. The song is a slow-paced and very intoxicating one, which makes you sway to its melody as it progresses. I just loved the way Amit tries to pep things up with the sudden loud drum beats, after which the song returns to its beautiful tempo and frequency. The song consists of two stanzas with the same tune and lyrics, but it still appeals to the ears. The arrangements, as I said, get lively suddenly, and that provides a really great listening experience. Also, the piano just keeps endearing us with its sweetness. The brass instruments are the showstealers here, however. And the strings orchestra is brilliant, calming things down in the background. Amitabh’s lyrics are also wonderful. Darbaan meaning ‘gaurd’ or ‘gatekeeper’ here symbolizes the hurdles in life that one has to overcome, and that life comes with its ups and downs, not a perfectly flat and easy journey. Excpetional composition, sung brilliantly by Papon and wonderful arrangements as well! However, the lyrics steal the limelight! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

8. Shut Up
Singer ~ Shefali Alvares

Starting with a pretty magnificent drumroll, and then rhythmic drum beats, along with grand and sinister a sounding trumpets, this song starts off on a mysterious note, but then settles into place as a quirky and lively jazz song. Shefali, yet again, takes complete hold of the situation and delivers with spunk and proves her mettle in singing jazz songs yet again. The composition may not grasp you at once, but it surely does grow on you after a few listens. This song showcases very efficiently the talent of Amit Trivedi as far as arrangements are concerned. The vast variety of instruments that he has used in this track, will just make you astonished. From the captivating drum rhythms, to the wonderful connective manner in which the trumpets have been played, to the quirky piano notes, every single instrument in this track has that appealing sound to it. Especially the wonderful beginning and ending to this song, is just fully packed with power, which is just increased by Shefali with her awesome vocals. The beginning and ending have this wonderful trumpet show which sounds pretty suspenseful. Saxophone interludes just keep you listening and craving for more. Amitabh’s lyrics here, also impress and do not disappoint. It will grow on you very quick, and you’ll find yourself loving Shefali’s rendition in no time! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

9. Behroopia
Singers ~ Mohit Chauhan & Neeti Mohan

After all that entertaining jazz, which I admit, was a bit tiring to hear all at once at a single stretch, here’s one song, that has absolutely no connection to the 60s, nor to the type of songs that we’ve been hearing in the album till now. Here comes a Bollywood romantic track, which, mind you, is not at all typical! Amit Trivedi, who’s been constantly coming up with more and more innovative songs since he’s arrived into Bollywood, comes up with yet another take on romantic songs. An awesome wind instrument welcomes us into the song, followed by a trumpet, together giving off a slight Rahman touch. When Mohit Chauhan starts off though, you forget everything else and decide to go with the flow of the song, which flows as constantly as a river, taking you along with it. The hookline, when it comes, is enough to induce those goosebumps, and to make a chill run down your spine. The haunting and intoxication feel of this song cannot be compared to any song that has released in recent days, and this will surely keep you busy for a long time… Just by hearing it on loop again and again. Mohit with his usual smooth, silky and appealing voice does wonders, but Neeti overshadows him in this one. Though she has less compared to him to sing, she steals the heart with her lines. In the high notes of the song, she does just awesome! The arrangements are fab, giving a kind of otherworldly feel to the song, especially in the part where they say the title of the song. Violins have been put to excellent use and those saxophone bits are very attractive. The beats are nice too, and the recording is brilliance at its height! Amitabh’s lyrics are very romantic and go well with the composition. The only duet, which works wonders, and stays with you long after it ends. Trivedi in Rahman attire! 😉 #5StarHotelSong!!

10. The Bombay Velvet Theme
Instrumental, Music by ~ Amit Trivedi

Right away when it starts, you can’t help but feel that it is something useless, only worth to listen in the theaters when you go watch the moving. However, just as we aren’t supposed to judge a book by its cover, we shouldn’t judge an instrumental by its starting. Because what this almost-five-minutes-long background piece conceals deep within, is something that totally deserves your time and attention. For the first one-and-a-half-minute, a wind instrument sounding like a flute or clarinet, tries to keep you listening, but doesn’t really make any effect. But wait! It’s the trumpets that alert you, and make you sit up. After that come the drums and finally a stupendous, mind-boggling electric guitar piece, which finally makes your thoughts about this track change drastically! Suspenseful, thrilling and sinister to the core, this track is sure to have you listening attentively. The Arabic sound of the composition is something that you will find yourself loving, and the royal and also majestic sound of the trumpets makes you love it even more. Amit Trivedi, what can I say? You’re a genius, to make instrumental tracks that sound so captivating even without the visuals! A treat for the cinema-goers, but Amit has made sure the ones who stay at home aren’t missing ANYTHING! #5StarHotelSong!!

 

11. Conspiracy
Instrumental, Music by ~ Amit Trivedi

Judging by the name itself, something mysterious and ominous was expected. Right from the moment it starts, the track has been moulded to make the listener feel just that, and creates just as mysterious an atmosphere as the previous track did. Again, the trumpets have been used efficiently, and they’re sure to create wonderful effects onscreen. The wind instrument towards the later part of the song sounds brilliant as well. The strings, however, are the best part of the track. What brilliant orchestration!! The strings are the ones who, after hearing, the person in charge of making up the names of these instrumental pieces, must have named it ‘Conspiracy’. They are the ones, whose sound itself will provide depth to the scenes in the film where this track would be used. They are the ones, who have fetched this song the honorary tag of #5StarHotelSong!!

 

12. Tommy Gun
Instrumental, Music by ~ Amit Trivedi

The last instrumental piece, is a wonderful display of drums and the brass band. It does contain the same rhythm that ‘Shut Up’ was composed on, and you can call it the instrumental version of ‘Shut Up’. But here, since the voice isn’t there, the arrangements naturally, automatically become more prominent, and you have more scope to appreciate them in their entirety. 🙂 The foot-tapping rhythm made you dance in the song, and makes you dance here as well. Kept short at two-and-a-half minutes, it doesn’t eat much of your time, and provides a good repeat listening to ‘Shut Up’, this time without the vocals. Energetic! #5StarHotelSong!!

13. Mohabbat Buri Bimari (Version 1) [Remixed by Mikey McCleary]

As I promised, here’s the review for “Version 1” of ‘Mohabbat Buri Bimari’. This one is a redux of the song by Amit, and who else better to remix something, than old McCleary? Like, if you sing to the tune of “Old McDonald Had A Farm”, it would go “Old McCleary made a remix, R-E-M-I-X” 😂😂 Jokes apart, this man has really fine a fantastic job on the original, giving it his own quirk, eliminating the waltz, and making it an out-and-out cabaret jazz number. Shalmali’s sensuous and intoxicating vocals are the cherry on the cake. She delivers each line with lots of pizzazz and style, making it instantly appealing. Arrangements done by Mikey are quite lively, his characteristic liveliness is evident in that he uses those weird but addictive sound effects, which work their magic here too. Trumpets sound awesome and that trumpet that blares after Shalmali sings “lagi tujhe”, is particularly spot-on! Other brass instruments, particularly the saxophone sound awesome as well. An awesome remix, turning the waltzy song into an effective cabaret number. It’s an entertaining show by Mikey, Shalmali and the trumpeter, Ketan Sodha! Of course, credits to Amit for the base composition! #5StarHotelSong!!

You must be thinking… Why don’t I just write a book on ‘The Music of Bombay Velvet’? Come on, the huge albums don’t release everyday, and even if they would’ve, who knows whether they would’ve been just as phenomenal and massive and mind-blowing as this one? Amit Trivedi has really worked hard day and night it seems, and it also seems that he has had thousands of sleepless nights just working on this album. (Note hat he started this album after the release of ‘Dev D’, reportedly) Well, he need not worry. After the release of this album, it is clear that all his immense hard work has not at all gone to waste! He has churned out beautiful songs that resemble the jazz era oh so fantastically, that it is no surprise that everyone was eagerly waiting for this album! The classiness of this album cannot be matched at all. At the same time, Mikey, who has been entrusted with two remixes, has shown his expertise in remixing and presenting songs in a totally different attire! Also, may I say that Neeti has finally got that strong footing in Bollywood which she’s been trying to look for all these days, and that she’s finally consolidated her position in Bollywood as one of the finest female singers of the new generation! Days of hard work by Amit Trivedi and the team of ‘Bombay Velvet’. No doubt, the best album of the year so far! So don’t delay it further, and witness this “class of 60s jazz!”

Note: The letter that is underlined is the final rating. Yes, I know, the third सां in four weeks! The music of 2015 is any day better than what we had to tolerate in 2014!!! First ‘Hawaizaada’ and ‘Badlapur’, then ‘Margarita With A Straw’ and ‘Piku’ in close succession and now, this one! THE ‘Bombay Velvet’ by THE Amit Trivedi!
